  1. Were you under the impression the Twins were retaining him for his bat? NL teams and fans are used to watching pitchers bat, so Butera will be a better fit there.
  2. Except, ironically, TD's traffic numbers. On 'Butera called up'/'Butera sent down'/'Player X claimed because Twins are wasting a 40 spot on Butera' days he generated a big chunk of the site hits, or seemed to at least. But the mods probably won't miss patrolling those pillow fights any more. Still early, but any word yet on whether Gardy will miss any games to undergo PTSD or grief counseling?
  3. “We’re looking for a younger, more controllable type guy, Like the year of control the team gave up for the privilege of watching Aaron Hicks flail away in the majors? Sounds like a major pivot in front office policy...
  4. Thanks to that godawful popup, I will not be purchasing Blue Moon if it's the last beer on Earth.
  5. Not only is another team not going to pay all or even most of Justin's remaining salary, they're also not going to give up any kind of actual prospect for the privilege of doing so. However you feel about the politics of how Target field was funded, you can see what a PR disaster it would be to trade one of the team's two most popular players in a straight-up, Calvin Griffith-style salary dump that nets pretty much nothing.
  6. But it's also close to Wadena, which is a more fun name to say when you want to get your Fargo accent on. http://www.bgsu.edu/images/cas/img49785.jpg Also, Park Rapidians are getting a little too big for their breeches lately, what with their fancy 4th of July parade, indoor plumbing, and laying claim to the birthplace of the mighty Mississippi. Making them the honorary location of the ASG logo star will only make their heads even bigger. Next thing you know they'll be boosting a logging truck some night after Foxy's closes and stealing Paul Bunyan from Bemidji. So how about if we let the fine folk in the sleepy village of Osage host the logo star? They're only 10 miles from Park Rapids, they're quite humble even as rural Minnesotans go, and the PR boost may be just the revenue enhancer the town needs to get both of its side streets paved.
  7. They'll dangle him, but they'll just end up pulling him back before they even make it very far into the nuisance claim stage.
  8. Good summary, and while it's difficult to find fault with Morneau being only a 1 in 5 chance of being moved, it would probably be a mistake not to take a Liriano-ish return for him, especially if the primary or even sole justification for hanging on to him is the fear of fan backlash after a trade. It's hard for me to think of a time when the Twins were less appealing to even casual fans than in the mid-to-late 90's, when fan favorites Paul Molitor and Terry Steinbach were still being trotted out as everyday players to distract fans from the appalling white-dwarf collapse of what had been regarded in 1995 as the shiny, happy nucleus of the next wave of competitiveness. And I think you could argue that both Molitor and Steinbach contributed more on field than Morneau is at this point, and even that they were selling more tickets as a percent of the overall box office. Some casual fans and some season ticket holders of the 'wins and RBIs' variety may grumble, and a few may even walk. But the cat is already out of the bag for most fans; they know the Twins stink even with Morneauzie in the lineup every day, and that he is unfortunately nowhere near the player he used to be. Send him to Texas, and play up the 'Justin will get another chance to play for a contender' and 'reunited with Joe Nathan' angles. Justin was one of the three most popular and productive players of the competitive run in the past decade. But it's over. Move on. The draw of the park and the emerging kids' storyline far exceed Morneau's at this point.
  9. Agreed with the rest of your post, you made some good points. But Andrus definitely got paid for his bat as well as his glove, since he was an above-average hitter for his position in 2011 and a top 10 bat in 2012. That's easy to forget when you see the kind of year he's having, but at just 24 and having been an All Star twice already, it seems more likely that this year will be the forgotten one after a couple of more seasons.
  10. As I said, Perkins is worth more than any of the guys who've been moved. That's obvious. But I doubt many teams would value him ahead of Veras, Crains and Downs combined, at least at the deadline. And what the three of them have netted so far doesn't add up to the value of a fringey A- or solid B+ prospect, which is what several posters (including me) would draw the line at where they would feel good about the Twins dealing Perk.
  11. Yeah. As the season wears on it appears increasingly likely that Dozier's likely future is Nick Punto with less defense, more pop, and hopefully far fewer head-first slides into first base...
  12. Atlanta has picked up LAA lefty Scott Downs in exchange for 25 year old AAA RHP Cory Rasmus, a reliever who I don't see graded any higher than a C prospect. Perkins has more value than any of the three relievers just traded, but even so, with what their teams have gotten for them it's hard to see Perkins bringing more than a middling B prospect.
  13. With all due respect, how in the #*@% is Ron Gardenhire going to say no to anyone's request for two extra days off for one normal childbirth, let alone for two births over a month premature? The man took three days off for his daughter's college graduation, for heaven's sake. And he did so with over two thirds of the season remaining, and with the team playing like a well-oiled machine whose owner's manual says in big red letters that oiling it will cause it to blow up. Really bad. Gardy's three game absence, while a bit of a head-scratcher to me at the time, ultimately didn't bother me from a priorities perspective. That, and the fact that it was almost unimaginable that the team could play significantly worse without him than they had with him. But if Mauer's extra two games off are worthy of criticism or questions about his commitment to the team, Gardenhire's three would just about have to be a fireable offense. Edit: In answer to your second question, hardly anyone would ask. Almost every Twins currently on the roster is playing at or barely above replacement level, and would probably be worried about losing their role even if they took just the full three days guaranteed by the CBA.
  14. That sounds about right, but he surprised lots of folks, including me, with the Revere trade. Two different situations, just mean they might pull another rabbit of the hat. Will be very happy to have Perk here another season if they don't.
  15. Mine is similar, but cannot be used as a snowmobile... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7a/Shriner_syrian_corvette.jpg/200px-Shriner_syrian_corvette.jpg
  16. Correia 2010-12 post All Star ERA is 5.25, all in the NL and mostly in one of the most pitcher-friendly parks in MLB. To paraphrase David Alan Grier in Maya Angelou drag, "Regression. Ain't this a b!tch!" http://comedycentral.mtvnimages.com/images/shows/chocolate_news/art/cn_101_maya_v6.jpg
  17. Don't forget the Chubby Old Lady gossip hour and the canning factory shift updates...
  18. Correia on pace for 225 pitch CGSHO...
  19. If the Twins can't at least approximate Morneau's offensive value with a platoon of players currently within the organization by the time they contend in 2015, then it seems likely that the farm system will have underachieved so much relative to its current and lofty ranking that... the Twins probably will not contend in 2015. If that's the case, maybe the Twins will keep Morneau around as a fan favorite on what is essentially a combination of a prospect sifter and exhibition squad, sort of like Molitor and Steinbach in '98. In other words, you may be right, but I hope not.
  20. Agree for the most part. My point was that even a reinterpretation of the front office boast that Target Field revenue would make them Players in free agency as merely a reference to spending more on retaining our own free agents doesn't hold much water when the two most notable free agents since TF opened are both playing for other teams.
  21. When a franchise has largely failed to produce anybody worth locking up, then some, or even most, of that money needs to be spent in free agency if a team is going to keep mumbling that it's not a rebuilding year, season after dreadful season. Free agency is far from dead elsewhere in the division, so it will probably come as a disappointment to Twins fans that they're essentially conceding that phase of roster construction.
