  1. Ouch. Too soon.
  2. If it were preordained due to arm conservation it would've been nice to know before he went out and got knocked around. This way it looks like just another demotion after a rough outing.
  3. Yeah. The euphoria induced by preseason football has really lessened the sting of another 90-loss steamer...
  4. http://mlblogsmartelli.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/moneyball_rincon_hd.jpg?w=300&h=168 So that's a hard no on Kershaw?
  5. If you reread the terms of use agreement that you carefully pored over years ago before you clicked on the 'sure, whatever' button, there's an opinion reversal buyout option you may have forgotten about that expunges any wrong opinions... for a price. Good news is that proceeds go toward covering TD bigwig farm team junke...I mean road tri.... actually, they're carefully planned research missions to evaluate Twins minor league talent. So they disappear your previous opinion and use the money to bring us even more up-to-the-minute info on whether Rosario will be able to stick at second. It's win/win! Take it from someone whose Lew Ford ASG appearance prediction...never happened.
  6. Agree to a point, but FIP says his ERA should probably improve even if his HR rate does not. Hey, if he didn't have some sort of red flag(s), he wouldn't even be considered a possible long-shot signing, right? If he sustains the K rate, he has a decent shot at being more effective in 2015-16 than any Twins pitcher currently above A ball. Also, his geek chic look will boost team popularity in the Teen Heartthrob demographic, partially offsetting his high price....
  7. You mean from the de facto subject of wartime HOF greats and the effect of missed time on their career stats, or the original topic, "infield defense"? For the record, I'm in favor of a strong infield defense in peacetime as long as it doesn't have an overly negative effect on other areas of the Twins' domestic spending.
  8. 2012 and 2013 to date, according to the subtitle.
  9. He's the reason I qualified it with "most". His decision to volunteer was commendable, selfless, and brave, but doesn't seem to me it had the impact on the public (and young people in particular) that the service of baseball deities like DiMaggio, Williams, and Feller did.
  10. That approach would have the virtue of being more interesting than watching the existing, recurring dilemma of a rotation and middle infield (Dozey excepted) cobbled together primarily from established mediocrity, fringe prospects, and quad A filler. The Twins face a future where they'll soon have a payroll comprised of Joe Mauer, Glen Perkins, and a bunch of kids making squat. Payroll carryover and front-loaded contracts/extensions are apparently a universal impossibility. That pretty much leaves "overpaying" for FA's or trading non-elite prospects for expensive salary-dump guys as the only alternative to the pitchforks-and-torches scenario of having one of the lowest payrolls in baseball playing in a publicly funded stadium.
  11. The Pirates platoon first and right. The left-handed components are Garrett Jones and Travis Snider respectively. Vs. RHP: Snider- .231/.295/.344 Jones- .257/.311/.443 Morneau .281/.341/.473 Replacing Snider's bat with Morneau's by putting Jones in right would net nearly a 200 point OPS increase for that spot in the lineup. Can't say for sure that they'd give us anything significant for him, but he is absolutely an upgrade.
  12. Blue monologue. Pole. Wash off. Exceptional. Well done. Also want to point out that even "a little Hanson" can lead to this terrifying image... http://blogs.gonomad.com/wp-content/blogpics/theerfiles/Hanson-Mmm-Bop-781440.JPEG
  13. If the Twins were making the choice between the hypotheticals in the summary, it would come down to how highly regarded the sidewalk chalk was by the Twins scouting department. Only statheads would worry about whether the numbers added up.
  14. That would be an interesting read. It seems to me that a part of what drives the debut age of pitchers is the relatively high percentage of them who don't turn pro until after at least a couple of years of college. The velocity drop-off study raises a good point, but that drop doesn't seem to correlate strongly to worsening effectiveness until after 30. There's certainly a case to be made that a GM would be more reluctant to sign the 26 year old debut to a long-term deal after two seasons just to avoid the likely post-29 velocity drops alone. Just a hunch, but it could be that the 24-year-old rookies will tend to fair better than 26-year-olds in a given slice of the decline curve simply because their earlier debuts are largely due to a greater level of talent.
  15. The Twins got a worthwhile prospect for a backup catcher who may never even suit up for his new franchise's major league club. Morneau is batting .283/.343/.476 this year against righties after regaining his power stroke, and put up a .290/.371/.531 line against them last year. In other words, Morneau has mostly been Morneau again against right-handers for going on two years now, and mostly been Butera-esque against lefties. A contender that's ok with platooning would absolutely value that. Whether a trade happens is hard to tell, but if it doesn't, it won't be because Morneau doesn't still have something to offer.
  16. The affect of the war on the career stats of Williams, DiMaggio, Feller, and others is too often forgotten. The very notion of famous athletes (and entertainers for that matter) even having served is lost on most young fans. Williams is an especially mind-boggling case because of his having volunteered for combat in Korea as well. Googling 'Ted Williams projected stats' returns several nicely-done reconstructions of what an uninterrupted Ted Williams career would look like. Almost certainly top 10 or even top 5 in HR, RBI, and runs to go along with an even more incredible batting average. Would have loved to see him play.
  17. This reminds me of another conversation, one that could have gone like this: http://thefw.com/files/2013/03/City-Slickers.jpg Bruno Kirby: "Just shut up! He doesn't get it! He'll never get it! It's been 4 hours! The cows understand sunk cost by now! Just forget about it!" Daniel Stern, to Billy Crystal: "Tell me again why the service clock matters." Bruno Kirby: "That's it. You're dead!" In fairness, like you said.... execs who control multi-million dollar budgets still don't get it. Nicely put though.
  18. Not sure what Buxton and Sano have to do with the rotation or the MLB season in general. Even if the farm system were relevant, the struggles of Gibson, Parmelee, Hicks, and until recently Dozier should be at least a bit of a reality check for how excited to be about the near-term futures of Twins prospects.
  19. We'd also be much closer to knowing what we have in Deduno and Albers, and to a lesser extent Gibson. Not advocating an all-or-nothing approach. It just would have been nice to see either an organization being honest with the fans and with itself about rebuilding, or an organization smart enough to know that this was a rebuilding year.
  20. Terry Ryan is a public figure who doesn't read this board. What's your point? Anyway, maybe it's time to get back to baseball before the Mod Squad arrives. http://www.fiftiesweb.com/tv/mod-squad-c.jpg I picture Snepp as Linc with a slightly larger afro.
  21. "We" prefer another label. Right.
  22. Yeah, it's not like there's a Tim Lincecum or Josh Johnson in that FA crop. And if there were, they would never come here unless the Twins severely overpay them. And even if they did, it wouldn't help build a contender, because that only happens through the draft and through trades for prospects. And Kevin Correia and Edwin Jackson are essentially the same caliber of pitchers. We've got it already.
  23. The "worst case scenario" has been the most accurate predictive model for the Twins for going on three seasons now. It's not surprising that people are angry. What's surprising is who they're angry at, and who they're not.
  24. He's right where he was with the Twins, playing in AAA and waiting for someone get hurt. It's only 23 plate appearances, but so far he's struggled to duplicate his historically awful MLB numbers. That the Dodgers were willing to overpay a bit doesn't change the fact that he is exactly what he was to the Twins: injury insurance and organizational filler. Would make for a great story if he turns out to be more.
