    As someone who has had the daily Minor League scoreboard bookmarked in my iPhone for 5+ years, I have to say, last year was the year i used it the least. 2-3 years ago I was constantly checking out all of our prime prospects. And it seemed like there were guys at every level. And a bunch of position players that I wanted to track daily. Last year (especially before the draft) was pretty boring. The pool had diminished, a lot of the guys worth keeping track of were hurt, many were relievers with inconsistent schedules, and most of the remaining guys were starting pitchers that only needed to be checked in on once a week. I'm looking forward to a new year of checking the MiLB Twins scoreboard multiple times per day.

    Span at Tampa could provide two things as it relates to a trade with MN. A) if Tampa is trading Archer, then they will not want Span's salary on the books B.) if they want Rosario or Kepler, then Span would be a decent stop-gap that would cost $23m for his remaining two years

    If a team can just stash a rule 5 guy on the 60 day DL then something is wrong with the system. I feel like the rules haven't caught up with the steep increase in injuries that cost players a year or more of development.

    While I am certainly a "let's wait and see" kind of guy that gives the benefit of the doubt, I will admit that the the combination of not signing anyone yet, and who we left exposed for the rule 5 draft does have me scratching my head a bit.

    Good find. I'm of the opinion (granted, it's a totally uneducated, unsourced, long shot, play the lottery if I'm right opinion) that Arrieta will end up signing a 1yr contract this offseason (for like 25M. He'll bet on himself because nobody will take on the 4+ year risk that he's asking for. I understand this is a long shot and his 6/150 will probably be announced 5 minutes after I post this, but I'm just not seeing any interest in him yet. He'll get some 2 year offers, but he'll opt for the 1 year route and test the process again next year. Anyway.... this is like a $10m make good contract.

    Talking about the cost of trainers and training facilities makes us sound like a pathetically small market. That's the type of stuff that might go through the Marlins FO's minds, but should never ever even come up from good organizations

    Just for the sake of argument, if Pineda had not blown out his arm and his early year stats projected out the whole year... A) what would he rank in terms of free agent starting pitchers B.) what kind of contract would he be looking at getting?

    From the fans' perspective this is the issue with no salary cap. We don't have enough information to confidently say what we would do. If I knew that our payroll cap was $130M then I'd say spending $8M on a big RP upgrade would be a good use of funds, but if I was told that $110M was our internal cap, then I'd probably focus most of our remaining resources on a SP upgrade and buy a couple lottery ticket RPs. It always sounds good to say "it's not my money" but we know Falvine has a cap (maybe a softish one), we just don't know what it is. The fact that Falvine spent $2m on Pineda for this season, doesn't give us the answer, but it does give us some clues. If their soft cap was $110m, I strongly doubt that they would use $2m of their $15m left on a organizational strategic move rather than on a move designed to make a big improvement for 2018. This makes me think that they are working with a number much closer to 130 than 110.

    Other scenarios include him being a good bullpen arm for 1.25 years or flipping him at the 2019 deadline. Neither is wonderful or terrible.

    I'm a little surprised by the negative opinions on this signing. Worse case scenario: we lit $10M on fire. MLB teams do that all the time. Median scenario: he comes back in Aug and pitches from the bullpen the rest of the year. 2019 he pitches like a good #4 starter, which, at $8M, is an underpay. He becomes a free agent and we thank him for his time here. Really Good Scenario: Same as above but he pitches like a 2/3, which $8M is a severe underpay, we extend him a QO and are happy if we get him for 1/18, or he declines and we get the 35th pick in the 2020 draft for the trouble.

    Y'all have taken a hard line before on moving and locking threads. My suggestion (not that you're asking) would be to lock up the "day 0" thread at midnight and start a day 3 thread.

    Cleveland's strength is its pitching. Pitching is historically more volitile year over year than hitting and more affected by injuries. They could have one pitcher get injured and one play like crap and all of a sudden they start to look pretty normal.

    The rumor comes from a Pirates fan site, not Seth. Which gives it more credibility than if it came from "us" And actually, the reaction from what seemed like Pirates fans on Twitter, was positive.

    I don't include Royce Lewis in any trade, unless it's a reasonably priced top 5 MLB pitcher with plenty of team control remaining AKA - I'm not trading Royce Lewis

    I would add a choice of Gonsalves/Romero to the rumored Cole package in order to get Archer instead. Is actually an interesting either/or. 4 years of Archer Or 2 years of Cole and 6 years of the prospect we lose.
