  1. Hey Archer at 26 pitches through 2 innings, can we get him through 5 innings and possibly even dream of getting into the 6th inning?
  2. When you read Mcdaniels article which is a pay article but you can read most of the information, with such a weak first round, this is going to be a draft where players will be picked all over the board under slot to make sure there is money to go over slot later in the draft specifically round 2-3. I think any of the top 3 catchers will be in play. You could see any of the 3b/OF/SS bat. maybe they surprise and take a high school pitcher or one of the injured pitchers at an under slot agreement. They have shown they are not afraid to draft injured players. The baseball drafts are always a crapshoot and I would say even more so this year. It will most likely be someone who hasn't been mentioned up to this point.
  3. What is my guess, well just look at past drafts. They love to draft SS, but with the depth in the Org a SS - I lean towards an elite C (lack of elite depth), or elite bat either outfield or other position. Unless there is a #1 pitching prospect they see, which I currently don't unless you take one of the injured players, you do their continued method of loading up on bats in the early rounds through around round 4 and then start pounding on pitchers that fit their mold (college, ideally tall, has elite curve or change up, is someone can add velocity to and has some elite peripherals). This will also be a draft where we will try to save up money to get an extra high level pick in the later rounds.
  4. He wanted the near 20 million a year contract, and the Twins would have been unlikely to outbid. So if he was to be a Twin still in 2022 he would have needed to sign the extension like he did in Toronto. Toronto was not willing to risk him going to free agency. Now look at the mess Toronto is in. We can agree to disagree. For my calcs I am including in as part of the cost of doing business. Or you are losing an asset for nothing.
  5. It is fully part of the calculation. If he was still with the Twins the extension needed to be signed last summer when they were working on it of this offseason like Buxton. Otherwise we are in the exact situation we are in with Correa. He would have been playing on an extended contract if the Twins were planning on keeping him or traded in the offseason for a package less than the one we received from Toronto. You have a player that intends to go to free agency unless given essentially #1 pitcher money. It was a wise decision to trade him for the package we received from Toronto. Otherwise as currently stands you would have a pitcher that is struggling to start the year, his trade value would be down unless he turns it around, and a player and agent that still want the big money. It was a no mans land for the Twins.
  6. 2 prospects both in AA Simeon Woods Richardson is a 21 year old pitcher who has been fast tracked to AA. After last night his ERA is down to 2.93. He is 3.5 years younger than the average player in AA. He had generally been known as a control pitcher with 4 good pitches working on a fifth, sitting at 93 mph on fastball up to 95. The month before traded to the Twins and in AA his control failed him. His ERA was 5- 6 in the Blue Jays system. Essentially I think they were willing to give up on him. I haven't heard if his velocity has increased since coming over but he is back on track to being a #2 to #3 pitcher. Austin Martin is an OF/SS prospect. Primarily played OF for Blue Jays. He is a Top 50-100 prospect in all of Baseball. His Bat is one of the best in the minors, His OBP regularly hovers around .400. Actually he has been struggling a bit with the bat, but still getting plenty of walks and still sitting at .380 OBP. His defense at short is currently rough. However, if the Twins can help him clean that up his prospect status goes up even more, but honestly the Twins do not need that. Ultimately he becomes a super utility in the Arreaz mold or an elite defensive outfielder. His bat can play in the majors now. Did I mention he has nearly 20 steals this year. He is a very good player.
  7. On top of that also gave that pitcher a 7 year 130 million extension. I think Berrios will improve, but there are 2 issues, one is his stuff even last year was beginning to regress. His whiff percentage last year declined from 2020, and this year is even worse. 2. Some of it is due to better competition on a more regular basis, but he is losing some control. Likely his fastball is probably needing more effort to keep it at the current velocity which is causing more accuracy issues. It is more down in the zone than previously leading to more hard hit percentage.
  8. I have a signed Kirby Puckett ball. I also have a team ball from either 2006 or 2007, there is a lot of really good players from that time period. Morneau, Mauer, Santana, Liriano, Nathan, Hunter. Luis Castillo decided he was really important and put a huge signature.
  9. Lets slow down fella. Noah Miller is looking good and smooth, I think it is a little early to say he will supplant Lewis. I am just glad the Twins have options at short, and Palacios and Holland appear to be helping that depth. Cavaco appears to still be MIA. Steer is demolishing the pitching at whatever level he his at. We will have a nice competition between him and Miranda and possibly Urshela for 3rd base next year. I don't think Steer will be the trade bait, but he could be. I think they would prefer to utilize prospects in the 10-30 range for relief help.
  10. We raided AAA on pitching. Winder, Smeltzer, Sands. Then again Balazovic is imploding in AAA. In general with pitching due to injuries and just the current point of prospects, AAA was our weak spot in the organization for pitching. It will get better. Not all of these pitchers are going to pan out, some will flame out, but I can guarantee we have a few more Winders that will well exceed our expectations when we drafted them.
  11. There are a couple things they lookfor from what I can gather. They prefer tall pitchers but are willing to look at all pitchers that have good control and pound the strike zone, They then look for a secondary pitch that is a plus pitch. The third thing they look for is good peripherals such as k/9 and k/bb. Then project what velocity they can add to these players. We now have 10-12 arms drafted after round 5 for the 2018-2021 drafts that all have a shot at the big leagues. What this front office is doing in the drafts is remarkable. That Covid year set us as much back on our draft strategy along with all the other implications. This isn’t a blind squirrel finding a nut, they are succeeding and doing it regularly with draft prospects that in general should be minor league fodder for a year or two.
  12. Dang your a tough critic especially off of small sample sizes. SWR is probably viewed much higher after the early season, 3.02 ERA. He is showing better control and has a chance at a call up mid season to AAA. He is doing really well and much better than struggling at AA with Toronto last year. Now let’s look at Martin who has flirted with an OBP near .400 for most of the year and has nearly 20 steals so far. No offense but that is a big league player. Now the question is to to where. Honestly I give Martin the rest of the year at shortstop to see if he can start to clean up his defense. You can move him to outfield or utility at any point. To me both have done more than enough to maintain their prospect status and SWR has actually probably improved a spot or two, The twins did well the trade, Berrios wanted more money and out of the Twins system. I said it in another thread. With 2 trades we have 2 years of Gray, SWR and Martin and traded away 1 year and 2 months of Berrios and Petty (who has a 4ERA in A ball last I checked). Incrementally the twins got better in those two trades. We got an extra year Gray, SWR and Petty are similar and we essentially got Martin as throw in. Add in money for an extension was likely used on Correa and we are in great shape.
  13. Add Paredes as another college late round draft pick to start to keep an eye on. It seems like every week we have another pitcher pop up who is doing incredible things in the minor leagues.
  14. Sanchez is exceeding my expectations so far. His defense is much better than in New York, and the bat has been decent, actually rather clutch. 25 rbi's for the end of May is really good.
  15. Not generally, but with this week coming up in Toronto and the double header today- it would be very uncharacteristic but would be an opportune time to see if he can get that extra inning. We are going to have to find those extra innings this week. But alas, they take him out with 2 outs.
  16. Smeltzer is saving that Bullpen today, do they dare send him out for the 8th inning.
  17. Palacios with a walk. A productive at bat from the rookie. 6 pitches thrown.
  18. They were a team that was able to punish mistakes made by pitching which with our division there were lots of mistakes. When you run into better pitching that doesn't make as many mistakes - well needless to say in a small sample size they didn't do as well. I do feel they mismanaged their pitching and we were a couple feet away from hitting those elusive home runs, I remember one by Sano specifically, also another by Cruz and I believe Rosario as well.
  19. I thought today coming into work that this next week would be the best opportunity to bring up Palacios.
  20. Injuries hurt, I can agree. Here the following win totals from the bottom 3 teams of each division: Central 178 East 205 West 218 Can you agree we faced the easiest competition of any other division by a rather large margin? Also pretty sure we hadn't signed Donaldson yet for 2019.
  21. I don't think we will ever get back to the timeframe where your starter is averaging 7 innings a game like Jack Morris in 1991. You need 4-5 solid relievers in todays game. The game has changed quite a bit since 1987 and 1991. If you have a pitcher throwing consistently in the 6-7 inning range you have the chance at increased injury, and this current SP staff other than Gray hasn't shown the ability to pitch over 150 innings in a season in the last 3-4 years.
  22. 1. The Twins did underperform in the 2019 playoffs, however its a much different ballgame to play the 2019 New York Yankess than having over decent chunk of your games be against the 2019 White Sox, Royals and Tigers. 2. Look the Donaldson contract was great. It shows the Twins are willing were willing to spend for players that can help the Twins in performance. We need the Twins to be willing to spend some of the money they have. The Twins have to be selective with who they sign but so far both Donaldson and Correa appear to be very good signings for the Twins.
  23. This team is taking college pitchers that have had a lot of "seasoning" and adding 5-8 mph on their pitches. Going from college to the pro's where you focus on your craft completely will of course add something to your pitch ability. The are finding arms as deep as round 15 and making them into useful arms either in the minor leagues or possibly even for the big leagues. I was actually surprised they drafted Chase Petty, and then they proceed to trade for 2 year of Sonny Gray who if he remains healthy is a better version of Berrios. If you net the two trades together, you get Gray, Martin and SWR for Berrios and Petty. The Twins incrementally got better from those 2 trades although I felt the Jays slightly overpaid for Berrios. But this is a thread on drafting college prospects, improving their mechanics to increase velocity and finding pitchers with an elite pitch they can begin to work off of. Needless to say they have plenty of college arms in the minor leagues that are finding success and adding to our future pitching pipeline.
  24. Most likely they continue to limp along with the Bullpen we have hoping to get gradual help from those coming back from injuries such as Alcala and Dobnack and Maeda. Then see if we can find 1-2 more from prospects that can also be a reliable arm. Then see if we can get a couple more at the deadline. We need at minimum 4-5 very good options for the playoffs, currently we have 1 with Smith being another who has performed well up to this point but likely doesn't have the stuff to put a team over the finish line come the playoffs.
