  1. Count me as one that was also surprised and disappointed that they selected Lewis with the first pick. But ... after reading more about him, and factoring in the uncertainty of the pitching prospects in the top five, I think it was a good pick. Plus, the other picks the Twins made in the early rounds look like good ones too. Astute, canny, smart, or whatever you want to call it, I think it was an impressive draft. We all know the results are still years away, but I'm optimistic.
  2. It was certainly an odd mix of first-timers on the roster this season. Not all of our favorite prospects were called to the show, but that's no tragedy either. Of course, many of those decisions were based on injuries, the need for a 26th-man, and other factors, so it's all understandable to a certain degree. Looking over the list, didn't Melville also make his major league debut this year? .
  3. An interesting, creative idea! Duda has never been one of those "wow" players that you get excited about, but as your stats you posted show, he's capable of putting up some very respectable numbers. He's certainly much young than Napoli, and less injury prone too. But as someone else noted, he doesn't seem to be the right fit for what the Twins need next season. Plus, they just signed Brock Stassi to a minor league contract, and he's a guy who is very good with the glove at first base if the Twins are looking for a backup at some point.
  4. So very true! I vividly recall all the clamoring for Sipp and Bastardo that year, and look how that worked out. Or rather how it didn't. Signing free agent relief pitchers can be such a gamble. I'm more comfortable with what we have in the system already. On that note, what is the consensus on Trevor May for 2018? Will they try him in the bullpen or give him a shot as starter again?
  5. Ah, the infamous Ron Davis syndrome! Maybe not as horrible as Steve Blass Disease, but nevertheless an ailment that makes longtimeTwins fans cringe! That aside, good points about Rodney. I'm not giddy over the signing, but hopefully he'll be a stabilizing presence in the closer's role. Then again ....
  6. Very informative roundup, Seth. Thanks for that. Interesting to hear that Mientkiewicz will be the Tigers' hitting coach ... in Toledo. Poor guy; that's a long way from his home in Florida!
  7. Call me crazy, but I don't hate the idea of the Twins picking up Kemp .... "picking up" as in claiming him after the Dodgers have released him. I definitely don't think he's worth giving up good prospects for. But Kemp has been fairly productive with the Braves the past 2 years and if he was confined to a DH and/or PH role, I think he'd be a good addition. I also don't think he'd be the clubhouse cancer than some fear. From what I read last year, his attitude has gotten much better since he left the Dodgers and Padres, realizing that he needs to put forth more effort (both on and off the field)if he wants to stick around. The biggest problem with Kemp at this point is that he is injury-prone (maybe playing in the AL and keeping him out of the outfield will help?) and he's not exactly fleet of foot any longer. But the guy can still hit.
  8. Okay, I'm confused. Which Stassi did we sign? There are actually two of them and they are brothers. Brock is the first baseman who made his debut with the Phillies last year. His brother Max is a catcher and played in the Astros organization last year, including a cup of coffee with the major league team.
  9. Yeah, I think finding closers is not such a difficult task, or at least not one you need to over-think. Given the opportunity, some guys rise to the task and shine. Remember some guy named Joe Nathan? The Jepson trade could certainly be called a bad one, or at least not a very productive one. But if I remember correctly they picked up Burton in the off-season for practically nothing and he performed very well that first year.
  10. We need more catching depth, and I'm encouraged by Ben's progress and his potential. Seems like he has those necessary intangibles like "good makeup" and the right attitude too. Keep on climbing that organizational ladder!
  11. Well written article and good analysis, Nick. As you so accurately stated: These are hefty prices to pay for relief pitchers, the most notoriously volatile of baseball assets. While it would be nice to bring in a veteran reliever with some firepower, I would hesitate to pay big bucks and a multi-year contract to some guy like Rodney who might implode in the first half. Frankly, I'd rather take my chances with the kids we have in the system already.
  12. On the possibility of the Twins signing Yu Darvish, every post or article I read mentions the "ties" that he has to Thad Levine from his days in Texas. But how much of a factor is that really? Just because Levine was in the front office at the same time, does that really signify some sort of strong relationship he had with Darvish? I mean, were they golfing buddies, going out for sushi together, swapping wives or something else that might have created a strong bond? Otherwise, it doesn't seem to me that such a tenuous "link" will play any part in Darvish deciding to sign with the Twins or not. Any thoughts?
  13. Fascinating article. Thanks for writing that one. Yes, the optimist in me certainly hopes that Slegers can make use of this unique attribute and win some games for us this year!
  14. That trade stills seems to good to be true. How did we steal that one? Then again, Arizona has made some loony deals in the past couple of years. Thinking of how Atlanta took took advantage of them a few times, getting good prospects for a whole lot of mediocrity.
  15. It's much much too early to be making bets or giving odds on the 2018 season. Hey, the festive off-season of trades and free-agent signings is just now starting. Tell those Vegas idiots to hold their horses!
  16. Nobody wanting to bring back Drew Butera?
  17. I don't think it's fair to cite Park or even Nishioka as comparisons or yardsticks as to whether or not we should take a chance on Otani, just because they are Asian players who played overseas, Park, for example, turned out to have an injury his first year with the Twins, and last year, after a very impressive Spring Training, he spent all year in the minors. I really don't think he's gotten a fair chance yet. Sure, he's not a young prospect at this point, and I understand the view that we need to "move on" from his signing, but I still think he could do some damage in the majors, that of the positive variety. But back to Otani; I'd love to gamble on his potential!
  18. Hard to say what is going to influence the front office's decision at this point. As others have already noted, Vargas possesses some impressive power, and if given the chance to show his stuff over a full season ... hmm, the results could either be very satisfactory, or very frustrating. I'm not sure if they are going to base their decision on Spring Training success, or lack of it. Based on that evaluative process, Park should have made the team last season, and he didn't. I guess I'm like most of those that have posted already: give the guy a chance. I'd had to lose him before the season opens and then see him produce All-Star stats for another team.
  19. I like what Jimmer said about Buxton gaining experience and taking better routes to balls, and perhaps not quite being so eager to slam dance with the outfield walls so often. What he might lose in speed he can somewhat compensate for with experience and knowledge. In the meantime, let's enjoy such marvelous fielding. I hope there is no noticeable drop-off anytime soon.
  20. I think the front office needs to decide --- or perhaps they have done so already --- whether or not the Twins can realistically compete again for a playoff spot in 2018. Like many out there, I was totally surprised by the Twins' strong showing in 2017. But that may have been somewhat of a false positive, at least in terms of lifting our expectations for this coming season. Do we really think we can compete at the same level at Cleveland and New York? Are we better off not gambling on expensive free agent signings and/or big trades, and allowing our young core of players and prospects to continue to develop, or do we decide to go for it now? Frankly, I think I'd rather be cautious and let the youngsters develop more this year and then REALLY go all out the following season.
  21. He can pitch, he can hit ... but can he shoot 3-pointers? Haven't had a good 2-sport star in a long time (wasn't Deion Sanders the last one?) , so why not let the T-Wolves sign this guy too?
  22. Molitor was the one who most exceeded expectations, but is that enough to win the award? No idea. If I had to bet money, I'd put it on Hinch being the winner.
  23. How can I purchase a Nippon-Ham Fighters baseball cap? I love that name!
  24. Yeah, as others have noted, a lot of borderline players on that list. Some you could make a case for based on WAR or "clutch" performances, but too many are in the Jim Rice (who DID make it) and David Cone territory. That said, I agree that Alan Trammell should be in there. Very underrated player.
  25. I wouldn't want either one either. Frankly, I'd rather them bring back Colon on a cheap deal than gamble on the likes of Lackey.
