Joe Ryan and the Elephant in the Room
Wedman13 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Surely don't have to but he's at a peak and every days diminished value. Performance, injury, affordability. Would you pay the same for a car 1 year older with 50k miles versus 1 year newer with 35k? No. im no expert, but its kinda negotiation 101 -
Royce Lewis Needs to Have an Open Mind
Wedman13 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I am not sure if you intended this to be thought provoking, but it really is, assuming you meant it this way. There has been a bit of 'shut up and play' commentary here. But it's such a fine line between confidence, cockiness, insecurity and inner drive - compounded by the fact that in baseball, as opposed to other sports, we have this odd expectation that players 'respect the game'., be quiet and play. in Football, the GOAT #12, or Adrian Peterson, or Rany Moss (last 2 were freaks) had an inner drive that made them want to destroy you. Basketball... MJ, Kobe, Bird, closer to home Ant would skin you alive to win a game. But for whatever reason Baseball is different, maybe because it's a game of failure.... but the greats need to channel it differently and Royce hasn't done that well. Just an observation from afar but he seems to want to please everyone else to the detriment of developing himself. So some want him to just 'shut up and hit' but I'd like to see him keep that edge... but use it internally to drive himself to what he can be - not to just say what he thinks others want to hear. Maybe that ends up being nothing more, and he can't lay off those maddening pitches you mentioned. Or maybe just maybe he finds the confidence he once had, says absolutely zero to the media, uses it as a 'I'm going to prove myself to myself' moment and begins to rake.. maybe that is the 'it' we often talk about between the talented AAAA players (Dave McCarty, JD Durbin, Adam Johnson, Todd Walker) and solid/spectacular major leaguers who would eat you alive (Tori Hunter, Joe Nathan, Harmon, even Joe Ryan) i believe where he is now is exactly where he should be, but I'm rooting for him. To find his mojo, authentically, and turn it around. really well said by you -
Snarkyness was not intended and if taken that way, apologies. I think a few folks were taken aback by the article and insinuation LK was benched and possibly on a Lewis/Wallner path - when we were at least told it was due to injury. He may well flame out, but it seems too early. And I don't think a Clemens, Arcia, Keidler and Gray infield inspires belief in the future - even if we win some this year. If Luke is a 3rd Baseman, OF'r, 1st baseman I'd be more concerned. But I'd sooner take lumps with him, then a retread or Tanner Schoebel. If he's still struggling a year from now it's fair game, some just believe it's too early. (Again, the article, not your comments) And right or wrong, I think many simply have flashbacks of Sanó, Gallo and MW that we find guys like Martin and LK somewhat refreshing to watch. I know I do. But your point is not dismissed at all.... and you may be spot on. entertaining discussion, thanks!

Royce Lewis Needs to Have an Open Mind
Wedman13 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I agree with this fully. Same with the lineup. Many players are creatures of habit. This is probably the only excuse I'll ever make for MW, and I'm sure the analytic fanatics will disagree, but it was complete malpractice to ever start last season with Wallner as the lead off hitter. (My opinion) -
Royce Lewis Needs to Have an Open Mind
Wedman13 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Zero idea what point you are trying to make. 1-1 picks since 1990 have been pretty solid. In fairness to Royce, he was a bargain signing, as Hunter Greene was pretty unanimously seen as the best player. But..... if we didn't save on Royce we wouldn't have been able to sign Blayne Enlow, so there's that -
No offense taken! I just don't love the extremes either, which is my only point. Clearly he/she doesn't see those 3 Hall of famers as a good comp to any second baseman, so it seemed rather odd. I hate to pile on Royce and MW but per the article I just think a 23yr old 2b in a 7-8 week slump is vastly different than upper 20's guys (who play positions that demand production) that struggled for a year plus. - that was what was in the article, not the comments. or maybe I'm just hoping beyond hope they keep the season semi-enjoyable, so am overly defensive :)
-
You may want to double check the comments and who introduced Ohtani, Judge and Soto and then rethink who you believe is the all or nothing crowd.... 'One of the very best ways to score a run is to drive yourself in, and 100-run scorers like Ohtani and Judge and Soto do exactly that dozens of times each season.' Keaschall is 23. He deserves a bit more patience than 8 weeks
-
We agree. Yes, I would take Ohtani, Judge and Soto over Keaschall too! But Until we fish in those waters I'm ok giving a 23 yr old 2nd round pick with a 162 game average of .270, around 75 rbi's and 75 runs scored, and 40 stolen bases - who is apparently under performing with those numbers - a chance

The Brooks Lee Third Base Era is Beginning

Spot on. Carew is on record saying if he wasn't traded he would sign elsewhere. Gene Autry was buying everyone then so rightfully, Rod chased the $. What Autry could not buy was a championship.

Nor should they try to replace Ryan, build a bullpen, get a catcher and a first baseman for $20m - and think they are a title contender. We will have a team full of Josh Bell's, grays', clemen's, and the list goes on.. get more talent in the 21-25 year old range, let them grow, and hope your scouting was solid. 2-3 years you may have something. Rolling it ba k year after year hasn't/didn't work, even with Buck

Fair, and I agree. I just think the info we have is that in a best case scenario Buck and Ryan stay healthy, and in 2 months we remain a team fighting to be .500. A team with no DH, 1st baseman, 3rd baseman, basically 2 utility guys starting at 2nd and SS, very middle of the road corner OF'rs and a very questionable bullpen. With that, can never pretend to compete outside the division. Buck especially, may be as valuable a commodity - right now- as there has been in baseball in years. An almost superstar making 1/3 his value for 2.5 years. It would suck to lose him, but there are very few opportunities to make potentially franchise altering moves. Every day from today, there is risk. What was he worth 2-3 years ago? A contract worthy of a middle of the road 2nd baseman. If, and it is an if, that happens again, we will have missed the opportunity franchises like the Twins need to compete. just opinion.

Your fact could change in a heartbeat with one Buxton and/or Ryan injury. I wouldn't so quickly overlook their (especially bucks) injury history. Life isn't static and maximizing value doesn't have an arbitrary date, such as a trade deadline.

No offense intended but we can't have it both ways. We can't keep the players that would generate value yet also restock the team. We can't give up 10 years of building the future for one night of a twins hall of fame induction in front of 15,000 fans. Bell, Martin, Lewis and Wallner will basically bring back a Bell, a Martin, a Lewis and Wallner. For them to ever hope to compete they need to be bold as one poster above mentioned. They need precision in knowing when value is at it peak, and recognize the timeline their most promising players are on. And I tune in to watch Buck, love seeing him play, but it's a pretty seismic difference to say he and Perez are similar, sans the World Series and future MLB Hall of Fame.

In my opinion, which is worth little, this nails it. The Pohlads are so nervous to be the Pohlads that they'll appease with the occasional Donaldson or Correa, surround them with 20 fringe major leaguers then sit tight with the below average fringe players way to long.. it may not have been popular the past 2 years but between Polanco and last year we have Bradley, Abel, Tait, Gonzalez, Rojas and Mendez. Will they all work out? No. But on the same timeline. That's not to say you can go 100% youth, but you can't dump all your payroll into 2-3 guys, like we seemingly always have the past 5-10 years. It's not basketball.

Just seems contributing backstops are hard to find. Forgot about Ober, which probably tells me what his value is. I do struggle with Ryan, as his velocity doesn't define his success,. Also, it won't happen but if you can trade Lee for some other teams struggling prospect I'd consider.

only opinions: 1.) Byron- would sting but I'd listen. Atlanta is a natural but they don't have the prospects. Dodgers have like 5 of the top 50. Gimme all 5. His value (talent and contract) have immense value 2.) Ryan - only if you are blown away 3.) Jeffers - I'd keep him 4.) Martin - No. Trade him just to hopefully get another Austin Martin? Doesn't make sense 5.) Bell - meh, don't care either way 6.) Royce - it's not Pennie's on the dollar, it's Pennie's on the quarter. If he can learn to put the ball in play, there may be a very tiny window where he contributes. Doubtful, but we're in Lloyd Christmas territory 6.) Wallner - for god sakes free the guy. Pennies on a nickel. It like the wolves signing a bad basketball player who can't make a bucket and plays bad D, but could win the slam dunk championship. If there's anything inside MW, let him set sail and find it elsewhere. Love the article

It's not unfair to say the bar is provably low for many, and maybe too high for others.. sure, lightning in a bottle can happen (Tampa seems to catch it well) but otherwise, if I were King, divisions would split from geography to payroll based - if no cap. It kinda works out that way in the AL Central and therefore you are right in saying the Twins have no excuse to not compete in this division.. that is why personally, I'm so disappointed in Royce and MW, and Pablo's injury. The margin for error is so low for many of these teams.

So now the goal posts move, got it. Figured that response was next. Fairly predictable, heck, even 'mediocre'. Enjoy the season!, I will.

Silly me for fantasizing they won a playoff series 2.5 years ago. Man the decades fly by... I'm such a loser, unlike someone as well schooled by facts as yourself
