  1. Hey, it helped win the Twins a game. That's great. But it requires some pretty thick blinders to point out that moment and ignore the 30 other times he has failed to get on base that potentially cost the Twins a game earlier in the season. Pedro Florimon hasn't only been bad at the plate, he has been an embarrassment. So bad that he has made Drew Butera look like a competent hitter. There's just no way one can ignore that.
  2. A fine argument if his OPS was around .500 or better. It's not. His LD% is a meager 15%. He's not doing anything right at the plate except taking some walks.
  3. His OPS+ is 125. His OBP is .328. His SLG is .468. Batting average tells only a fragment of the story, which is why it should never be used in isolation.
  4. I'm sorry, but that is painting an absurdly rosy picture of the situation. Florimon isn't missing gloves, his bat is missing the ball. 10 strikeouts in 35 PAs. One does not attain a -30 OPS+ through bad luck. One attains a -30 OPS+ through bad play. And don't accuse the rest of us of not watching games. That's incredibly bad form, especially when the facts are directly opposing your argument.
  5. While I agree with the sentiment (that the Twins have too many empty hitters), Dozier doesn't belong anywhere in this conversation. He has been an above average hitter for a full season now.
  6. Through 11 regular season games, the Kansas City Royals have one home run as a team. One. That is currently good for a 1:356 HR/AB ratio. Jamey Carroll's career HR/AB ratio is 1:282.
  7. A fair comparison. I'd take the Erickson comp at this point.
  8. Brian Dozier may have a luscious mane but he doesn't have a great baseball name like Jedd Gyorko. That has to be worth at least $5m.
  9. What's funny is that a 24 year old Jamey Carroll was a pretty bad player. A 34 year old Jamey Carroll, on the other hand... He's a pretty valuable guy to have around.
  10. Yeah, Webb was a rarity. Personally, I think Gibson will probably end up a 5-6k per 9 guy. Good, but not close to Webb. If he can find a way to keep generating grounders with a 7k per 9, he should be very good.
  11. I agree that Gibson's K rate *should* climb, I guess I'm just nervous about making any comparisons to Webb because, as you said, Webb was an incredibly effective pitcher for a time. An ace on most teams, a super-2 on the rest.
  12. Personally, I think so. Then again, my dislike for Florimon is quite well known.
  13. My thoughts as well. He might even end up a #4, which isn't optimal but is better than nothing.
  14. The value difference in trading Dozier right now and trading him in July of 2015 is minimal. In the meantime, you get a good player on a team that badly needs good players. Of course, you also run the risk of him getting hurt but one can't run a baseball team scared that his players will get injured. I believe every team should start the season with the goal of winning baseball games. If good things happen, run with it and adjust on the fly. If bad things happen, consider moving players with value if the deal is right... But only if the deal is right. And I don't see any reason why the Red Sox would offer fair value for Dozier right now. It's really easy to end up being the Kansas City Royals for 2+ decades if you continually trade off good players. At some point, you need to keep a few "bridge" players and hope that their experience will put you over the top when the big wave of prospects starts to hit.
  15. I think Gibson's absolute ceiling is Webb. I'd love for him to reach it, I just don't see it happening. I'm not convinced he can miss that many bats. I hope I'm wrong.
  16. Well, then you should be somewhat interested that they just picked one up. If Nunez even qualifies as a shortstop at this point. But I understand your pain. The Twins' shortstop situation is beyond aggravating and has been for the better part of two decades. I hope that they see something real in Nunez but in all likelihood, he's just another Escobar/Florimon retread.
  17. Again, it's very much worth talking about... It's not worth getting upset or excited about. I'm mildly intrigued by Nunez as a player. He's a failed prospect traded for a C/C- prospect. Do I expect anything from him? No, not at all. Will I follow his development? Absolutely. Am I going to raise a fuss about him or Sulbaran? Absolutely not.
  18. To add a footnote about Solarte, he was acquired as a six year free agent. Not much you can do about that. The Rangers didn't fall over themselves to keep him around, as he posted a .735-ish OPS in 263 AAA games for them. Nice pick-up by the Yankees and we'll see if it actually works in the long-term, not over ~50 PAs.
  19. Excellent point. So it's even more logical for this to happen, no need to negotiate it into the contract.
  20. Now you understand. Congratulations! Even if someone was right about Solarte (and I don't remember anyone raising an objection at the time), chances are that they were wrong about 75% of the Twins' other moves in recent years... And that's the point. Most of these moves don't matter. A few do matter. And since few of us actually get to see these men play baseball and have no first-hand knowledge of their personalities, work ethic, or how they fit into the organization as a whole, we're wildly spraying opinions without much in the way of actual knowledge to back it up. And that gets pretty tiring after a time.
  21. I think it's more likely that Rosario or Dozier gets traded. Rosario's bat doesn't profile to a corner OF spot and if he comes back and continues to hit, his value should be sky-high (and Dozier's value continues to skyrocket).
  22. Good point about Solarte. I forgot about him... I'm hesitant to call him an MLB starter but he's looked good thus far, that's for sure. Man, the Twins sure make a lot of bad decisions about middle infielders.
  23. Eh, I'm not quite that confident. Right now, I think the offense is a lot of smoke and mirrors. It probably won't be terrible but it won't continue at anything close to this rate for the entire season. I could easily see the Twins finishing the month close to .500 backed by a hot offense and then tail-spinning their way to a 72 win season. On the other hand, the pitching has been bad and may compensate for an offensive drop-off in later months. Either way, I still think they're a 72-ish win team. And I'm okay with that. If they manage to hit 75 wins, I'll be happy. If they approach 80, I'll be ecstatic.
  24. Honestly, I'm not worried about Florimon's batting average. That will come back up in time. My issues with Florimon is that he's 27 years old, hasn't hit anywhere in close to a decade, and became a worse hitter as 2013 progressed. I think 2013 was his ceiling - or close to it, anyway - and he was due for a sub-.600 OPS in 2014. Him completely falling apart might be a good thing for the organization as a whole, as they won't waste time trying to develop a player who isn't good enough to be on an MLB roster. Plus, he has options. Send him down and let him take hacks at MiLB pitching and use him as a player of his ilk should be used, as an emergency stop-gap.
  25. I wonder if this is a good opt-out for all parties. The Sox can take back Drew without losing a pick. They could negotiate a contract that doesn't allow him to be offered arbitration next season. This offseason, Drew walks without the albatross that is a comp pick around his neck. This makes all the sense in the world.
