I agree that the Bartlett move was dumb but given how willing the Twins were to cast off Presley, it makes me wonder if there wasn't a personality conflict there... Nothing else makes sense. He was "Hicks insurance" going into Spring Training and by the end of March, they placed him on waivers. It doesn't make sense from an outside perspective and makes me wonder if there isn't more to the story. Either way, I question whether it really matters. Presley is playing badly, Mastro isn't the same guy anymore after the leg injury, and Fuld is playing over his head. Yeah, it'd be nice if they had actually gone out and "fixed" the problem but I think they expected Presley to be that fix and something went wrong there between March 1st and March 30th.
I didn't see this coming. I expected Johnson to stay in Minnesota or Deduno to take Pelfrey's role or a reliever to come up from Rochester. I didn't expect them to bring up Darnell.
They either had to address the CF situation in a meaningful way or it doesn't really matter. Sam Fuld or Alex Presley or Darin Mastroianni, none of them are particularly good choices and none of them are significantly better than the others. Alex Presley is currently rocking a Hicks-esque 70 OPS+ for Houston. Mastroianni isn't the same player he was before the injury. Sam Fuld, eh, whatever. He has played well thus far but I don't expect that to continue.
I think that's Brunansky, not Goin. Jack Goin doesn't have influence on guys like Pinto, Plouffe, and Suzuki suddenly figuring it out. He can acquire guys who have a track record of patience but he can't turn impatient hitters into patient ones.
Jack Goin is the head of their statistical analysis and he has at least a couple part-timers under him. It's not a large group but it's growing in both size and influence, it seems.
Mike Pelfrey has started 5 games. He has pitched 23.2 innings and has struck out 10 batters. Samuel Deduno has started 0 games. He has pitched 18.2 innings and has struck out 18 batters.
Deduno's almost surely done today. So... Pelfrey: 4 IP, 7 hits, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO, 85 pitches. Deduno: 4 IP, 7 hits, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 62 pitches. Closer than I'd like but I don't see how you start Pelfrey five days from now.
I think this is the moment when every Twins fan should be praying for a dominant performance over four innings from Deduno. At that point, I don't see how the Twins roll out Pelfrey in five days while Deduno continues in the pen.
DL him. His fastball is sitting at 89-90 today. Something is wrong. If you can't DL him, I don't care what you do with him, just keep him out of the rotation.
The upside to this game is that I don't see how the Twins give Pelfrey another start. He's not even sitting at 91mph today. He's hovering at 89-90 and he's an AWFUL pitcher at that speed.
