  1. I think there's a big difference between Brian Dozier and the FSN Girls. Being respectful doesn't mean you put the libido on the shelf and pretend that attractive people aren't attractive. Brian Dozier is on that field for one reason: to play baseball. Is he attractive to many women? Yeah. Good for him. At no point did Gardenhire say "Yeah, it might cost us a couple of wins this season but put in the hot kid with the hair. We need butts in seats." *cue player under Gardy's desk joke here* Natalie Portman is absurdly hot. She's also a hell of an actress and that's a big reason why she gets the roles she does (being that it's Hollywood, "hot" also plays a role). There's nothing wrong with appreciating attractive people and occasionally ogling them... It's human nature. We're not robots. Hell, if the scales were even balanced at 50/50 men and women getting these same types of "FSN Girls/Boys" roles, it might be somewhat palatable... But that's not the case. Overwhelmingly, it's women who are put in these types of "stand there and look pretty" roles and it's horribly insulting to both genders. One, for putting women in that job with the pretense that they are incapable of doing anything more and two, for the thinking that men are so completely sex-crazed that they won't realize they're being pandered to at the lowest level.
  2. So be it... Jedi. http://rtobin.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/palpatine6.jpg
  3. Whoa, Ashbury. I'M the guy who posts Star Wars memes. Tread lightly, buddy.
  4. If you want to blame someone, blame the owners of Twins Daily, not the moderators. We ask for posters to follow some pretty basic rules of decency and to keep things focused on baseball. It's really not that hard.
  5. I lean toward Molitor but have warmed up on Mientkiewicz in recent weeks. Not mentioned in this article is that we have slightly more information on Molitor... Which makes this discussion hard to qualify Dougie's merits. But we do know that Molitor doesn't shy away from sabr stats and advanced metrics. That's a huge plus in his favor. This isn't terribly surprising, as he was a cerebral player who actually improved in his 30s. He's obviously a student of the game and isn't afraid to embrace new concepts as they arrive. Does Doug have the same ability, a desire to change approaches as new information is discovered? I don't know... He was a fiery player but I'm not sure he was a cerebral player. And after 13 years of Gardenhire, a guy who often did things because "that's the way they've always been done", I lean toward the guy who I know is going to evolve with the times, even if he's a year older than Gardenhire. Of course, Mientkiewicz could be capable of doing the same... We simply don't know.
  6. I despise any kind of "fill in blank Girls". I despise booth babes and anyone who is hired for their looks instead of their ability to do the job. So, yeah, I hate the FSN Girls. With a fiery passion, actually. I also hate cheerleaders but at least they have a job requisite outside of "stand there and be hot". TV personalities, by and large, have to look good. That's fine, whatever. It's what people want... But there is no shortage of good-looking people who are capable of doing more than standing there and looking good. Give them a real job doing something meaningful. It will make the telecast more interesting if it's filled with people who know what the hell they're talking about.
  7. Heh. I seem to vaguely recall that game.
  8. The fan base was more than ready to see him go but that's because the Twins had the consensus #3-4 prospect in all of baseball behind him.
  9. If Mientkiewicz gets the job, will he steal a commemorative baseball from Ryan's desk? We need odds on this.
  10. I remember your post. Knowing you as a poster, I think I understood your context but the mods are rightly sensitive regarding any Mauer threads because they routinely turn into a three-ring circus. Are we over-sensitive about Mauer? Possibly, but it's more out of necessity than any real love of Joey Baseball. He's a polarizing figure in Minnesota... All you have to do is look at that (awful) article yesterday to see there's still a lot of resentment toward him and his paycheck. Had your rephrased your statement a bit I think the mods would have let it go... For example, instead of calling him stupid, something like "his reluctance to engage the media and be forthright about past issues has made him look pretty dumb, hurting his image". I think that's what you were trying to say in the first place... That's what I got from your post, anyway. A fine line? Yeah, definitely. But given the frequent ****storms that are Mauer threads, it's something we're pretty sensitive to as a group.
  11. I'm still not sure I care much though Steinbach doesn't excite me much. I'd rather seen Molitor or Mientkiewicz get the job. I have no real opinion on Davis, really.
  12. Lewis Thorpe cannot crack the top ten list in the organization. Wow. That says all you need to know about the Twins system right now.
  13. I cannot win in recent postseasons. Wanted to see the A's and Pirates, both lose spectacularly in WC games. Okay, now I guess I have to cheer for the Royals and everybody in the NL to lose.
  14. In practice, I believe the A's trade looked better. In reality, the Royals trade was absolutely better... Not because I agree with the Royals trade so much as the A's trade was a complete and utter disaster. The A's were the best team in baseball at the time of the trade, vastly improved their team on paper, and barely scraped into the playoffs as a second Wild Card when all was said and done. Yikes.
  15. I wanted to see Beane get a ring. Well, that's not going to happen (again, what the hell happened to Oakland?). So I guess I'll move on to Kansas City in the AL and Pittsburgh in the NL.
  16. People who don't vote for guys like Jeter or Maddux deserve to have their votes taken away on the grounds of blatant stupidity.
  17. Man, I thought this might have been Beane's year but the team fell apart. The baseball gods hate that dude. Good for the Royals, though. I thought they were sunk.
  18. Well, I think we can safely say the Royals' gross ticket income was somewhere between $7-11m more than 2013. That doesn't include the implied increase in television revenue the team will receive next time their contract is renewed. That's a significant chunk of change. Not enough to cover a guy like James Shields but it's a significant chunk of change. It's an interesting thought exercise, trying to physically attach dollar revenue to improved play.
  19. Yep. I'm not arguing, just curious to know the actual expenditure by the average fan. It's not something I think about a whole lot.
  20. Someone actually did the legwork on the average cost of an MLB game per stadium. Kauffman clocks in at $192 per family of four, or roughly $48 per person. http://www.azcentral.com/story/money/business/consumer/2014/07/12/cost-attend-majorleague-baseball-game/12578975/
  21. I don't spend anything close to $75 per person per game... And that's not including material costs of food and whether KC gets revenue from Kauffman parking (I literally have zero idea of the parking situation in Kauffman, having never been there).
  22. Yeah, one would hope that Kansas City will continue to support the team in higher numbers the more they win, I was just surprised at the small bump they received this year... After all, they had an 86 win season in 2013.
  23. Holy crap, I thought their attendance was better than this: 2014: 1,956,482 2013: 1,750,754 2012: 1,739,859 That's only 2,600 more people through the turnstiles per game since 2012.
