1. While I could not care less if a pitcher of Hamels' contract is "blocking" a prospect, the monetary side of this is something the Twins need to consider. Having Mauer and Hamels in lock-step decline while consuming $45m might not hurt this team's ability to contend, it might cripple it beyond repair.
2. Same here. Kohl Stewart or Lewis Thorpe, I can get behind that move... But I'm so wary of trading upper minors pitchers when four spots in this rotation have plenty of room to improve. One guy isn't going to put this team in contention. Next year, if Meyer has a breakout season and the Twins win ~80 games, yeah, then go get a guy like Hamels but right now, there are so many holes in this rotation that I want all viable upper minors arms retained in hopes a few of them prove to be more than middling.
3. Because there's a good chance that Hamels won't continue pitching like an ace and will settle into being a "pretty good #2", being that he's going into his age 31 season. Or maybe he'll flame out entirely (which is also possible for Meyer/Berrios, though having two prospects of that calibre reduces the overall risk and reliance on one pitcher breaking into stardom). Teams don't build long term contenders by trading away potential aces for shorter-term aging aces. Build the core, then go get the pieces you need to push the team to elite status. If the Twins are going to top the AL Central for 3-4 years, they'll do it based on success stories from the farm. Hamels is great if you want to round out a staff but the core of the team will come from the farm, not trades.
4. It really depends on prospects included... For pretty obvious reasons, I'd be unwilling to give up one of Berrios, Meyer, Sano, or Buxton. If you can get it done without one of those guys - which is extremely unlikely - then hell yeah, I'd explore that deal.
5. Derp. I was thinking Hamels and typed Lee for some reason. Still, the point stands. Hamels is a very good pitcher but he's over 30 years old and is owed a boatload of money. Trading one very good MLB player, one excellent prospect, and two middling prospects sounds like a terrible idea to me. Hamels is still owed over $100m. At that point, why not buy James Shields and keep all those prospects?
6. For Cliff Lee? I wouldn't trade Brian Dozier straight up for Cliff Lee at this point.
7. I'm surprised by this and a touch disappointed that they didn't go outside the organization. On the other hand, I've always though Vavra got a bit of a raw deal as hitting coach. The offense performed quite well under his tutelage.
8. Sure, I'm all for keeping an open mind to any possibility but realistically, a top of the rotation arm is going to cost one of Meyer, Buxton, Sano, or Berrios. And I'm not willing to pay that price for any pitcher not named Clayton Kershaw.
9. Or they could have traded Santana or Vargas. It goes both ways. I'm not against trading prospects, I simply don't believe the timing is right. You fill a roster with a few question marks and try to become competitive and then you start considering trades. Give up prospects when you think it gets you to the postseason. Giving up prospects to win 84 games would just piss me off.
10. I'm not a fan of 72 win teams trading prospects for rental players, period (which is what the Twins would get in trade... Maybe two years of a guy for a prospect). I think that's putting too much stock in the "now" and not enough stock in the "later". I feel even more strongly about it when the Twins have two top 100 prospects, at least one of which will get 2015 MLB innings and the second has a good shot at getting 2015 MLB innings. Add in a fringe prospect like May who already has MLB innings and trading away a guy for an MLB pitcher seems like an even worse idea. The Twins have a lot of open money this offseason. If they feel they need a pitcher that badly, go buy one. Personally, I'd let the kids play and run with the staff as-is and I'd look for OF help with that money.
11. I don't think the Twins have the best farm system in MLB right now, much less the best ever. With Alex Meyer and Jose Berrios due in Minnesota this year or next, I think trading away a prospect is short-sighted, especially coming off a 72 win season. If nobody breaks out in the rotation and the Twins win 78 games this year based on an offensive surge, then maybe... But right now? It seems like forcing the issue. If you want another pitcher, go buy one.
12. I'm hoping his heart is saying "Pine Bluff, AK" and his desires are saying "ice cream".
13. The idea of a 72 win team giving up valuable prospects for a pitcher makes my stomach turn.
14. There are plenty of teams that have gone stat-heavy and had mixed results. It's not an automatic path to a championship. There's plenty of room in this game for old-fashioned scouts and baseball people. The two should complement each other, not be at odds.
15. I'll look into it again. Testing in IE is such a pain because you need so many versions for testing.
16. The Twins haven't gone with every coach I'd pick first but what the hell do I know anyway. I can read a Wiki page and blurbs from each candidate but I don't really know the habits and strengths of any of these guys. With that said, to a man - excepting Guardado, who I know nothing about past his playing days - the Twins have chosen a candidate who was on my radar as a possibility for each position. I'm very satisfied with how the coaching selections have gone down thus far (assuming the Allen report is accurate).
17. While I know very little about the coaching style of either Willis or Allen, I was leaning toward Allen because he's in the Rays organization and I respect that org from top to bottom. An intriguing choice. Is it the right choice? Time will tell. Or maybe it won't because grading coaches is real hard.
18. Didn't the Twins just get rid of Josh Willingham? Why do they want him back?
19. I've added embed tweet functionality but it works slightly different than you might expect. You CANNOT use the "Embed Tweet" code from Twitter, as this site does not allow the injection of mark-up into posts, blogs, or articles. Click into the tweet you wish to embed using your browser. Grab the URL of the tweet, which will look something like this: https://twitter.com/AMZNGameStudios/status/535494066079682561Wrap that in a media tag in your post (using either the drop-down menu or just typing it. That will look like this (twitter.com has been edited here so it will generate a visual representation): Then your embedded tweet will appear like this: https://twitter.com/AMZNGameStudios/status/535494066079682561
20. Somehow that one completely flew under my radar. Or maybe I read it once and promptly forgot about it. That's also a possibility.
21. Whaaaaaaaa? I didn't even realize Guardado was interested in coaching or that he had been around the Twins organization recently. I assume Guardado is another Spanish speaker added to the staff. Hailing from Stockton, CA, there's a good chance he's fluent in the language.
22. I'm not suggesting that outliers don't exist... I'm simply not confident that dWAR (and UZR) is capable of accurately measuring those players. Simmons is a great defender. He might be worth four wins with the glove. Do I trust dWAR to tell me that? No, not really.
23. I generally look at BB% and K%. For relievers, I tend to avoid most stats and look at whether he issues free passes and misses bats (I also glance at HR and H/9). But to each their own. There are plenty of ways to evaluate a reliever but the Save stat is one of the worst.
24. Rios is an interesting candidate but I'm not sure how far he can bounce back in Target Field. He has played the past five seasons in two of the most hitter-friendly stadiums in MLB.
25. K%, yes. Saves, no. The Save stat is basically junk for the reasons listed above. Its rules are completely arbitrary and give very little insight into the actual quality of the pitcher. I'd use WAR over the Save statistic, for sure. No question at all.
