  1. Yeesh. Somehow I missed that Scherzer went to the Nationals. Yeah, I no longer think Detroit is going to win the division.
  2. I see your points and some are valid but before we talk about how badly mismanaged Meyer and May have been, remember this: Frank Viola was called up as a 22 year old in 1982. He was terrible for five years. He was good for two and then left for New York. Playing the kids isn't always the right call, especially if they're not ready. Personally, I think May and Meyer are ready but what do I know. And didn't Ryan do exactly what you're advocating with Hicks and get crucified by the fanbase for it?
  3. The problem with comparing 1982 & 1999 to 2011 is that the Twins didn't have good young prospects to fill a roster in 2011. If the Twins ship out all the vets in 2011, who plays? Cole DeVries, Chris Parmelee, & Co? You could argue that tanking hard and fast is the right course but there are huge flaws with comparing 2011 to 1982/1999 because the situation was considerably different. There weren't any Hrbeks, Gaettis, Hunters, or Koskies available in 2011.
  4. Look at where Bourn derives the bulk of his fWAR and then rethink why you believe he's ripe for a bounceback. Here are his DRS numbers from the past several years: 11, 30, -3, 24, 3, -6. So we have a guy with a middling bat, mediocre/subpar on-base ability, a guy who gets a lot of his offense from his legs and derives most of his WAR from defense. This same player is entering his age 32 season at an up-the-middle position. And you expect him to bounce back? I look at that guy and see a pretty routine - and expected - player decline.
  5. Why should we expect a bounceback from Bourn? His numbers in 2014 (albeit in a shortened season) weren't far off his career numbers. He's basically a league average player that has two outlier seasons with a high WAR. He's a defensive-oriented up-the-middle player with a mediocre bat who is entering his age 32 season. If anything, Bourn is due to regress any minute now and when he does, there's a good chance it'll be ugly. He's a player on the wrong side of 30 who relies on his legs for offense. He doesn't hit for average, he's not particularly disciplined, and he doesn't have great power. I agree that Kipnis is probably due for a rebound season.
  6. That's all fine and dandy and I do believe that good bullpens tend to overperform pythag records over a season but... The Royals were 22-25 in one run games last season. This argument doesn't really pass the smell test. IMO, bullpens can help pythag record differential but +5 is a pretty huge difference. I wouldn't put money on the Royals repeating that a second time. Add in the loss of Shields and his annual consumption of innings and things start to stack against the Royals repeating their 2014 campaign. It's not impossible because they're young and have room to develop but it's somewhat of a leap to just wash away 9+ wins between pythag and Shields and assume they're on the verge of a 90 win season (again, that's my argument... not whether the Royals will be good, whether they'll be as good or better than last year).
  7. I think they'll be a pretty good team but they were lucky last year. Based on runs scored vs runs allowed, they were +5 wins over a luck neutral team. I didn't say everything went right last year. I said they need to compensate for 8-9 wins between luck and James Shields to be better than they were in 2014. That's a difficult hurdle to overcome. Not impossible but pretty difficult.
  8. Probably my favorite statement in the history of the Twins Daily forums.
  9. Klaw continues to hate on Berrios. I like Klaw but he turns irrational about specific players at times. I find it funny but he should probably be a little embarrassed because it's so obvious. I don't think there's another national writer out there who puts Stewart ahead of Berrios after 2014.
  10. It's going to require a lot to go right and virtually nothing to go wrong for the Royals to be better in 2015. They lost James Shields and finished +5 in Pythag last season. That's 8-9 games they need to compensate for in 2015 if luck-neutral. I expect the Royals to be around 85 wins. Good, not quite good enough to make the playoffs unless they get pretty lucky or the rest of the division falls completely flat.
  11. I should add that if any team is going to completely implode in 2015, I think it'll be the Tigers. The Royals might slip but I think they'll still be good/decent. On the other hand, Detroit is primed for a couple of players to fall off a cliff.
  12. The Twins are favored for last place and for good reason. If I was putting money on the Twins passing anybody, it'd be the Indians and/or White Sox, not the Royals. I'm not much of a prediction person but I see the ALC shaping up like this: DET KCR CHW CLE MIN (better but still last... maybe 75-78 wins) I hope it finishes more like: DET (they're old and can't sustain this forever so one more good year then collapse) KCR (gonna be a threat for awhile) MIN (progress!) CLE (just not in love with this team) CHW (not sure what to think of the Whities right now) I think this division is going to be *really* tight. No 90 win teams, no 90 loss teams. There's a good chance 88-89 wins takes this division.
  13. I'm concerned about Vargas but I'm much more concerned about Santana. Vargas has a solid MiLB track record with sustained OBP success. Santana has none of those things.
  14. I'm a bit of a purist but I'm not entirely against this idea. Some managers have gone completely off the deep end with bullpen management and it's hurting the game. There are a few reasons to force a pitcher to face more than one batter: 1. It speeds up the game. A lot. 2. It forces more utilitarian bullpens, which *should* lead to smaller bullpens 3. Smaller bullpens mean bigger benches, which make for better late-inning substitutions While I'm not against this idea, I'd wait on it for a year. First and foremost, just impose the rule on the books. We don't even need a rule change, or a pitch clock, or any of that garbage. If the pitcher doesn't release the ball within 12 seconds of receiving it, call a ball. It's that bloody simple. The rule exists. Enforce it. If a batter is doing his best tree sloth impression while adjusting his jock, gloves, tying his shoes, whatever, tell him to get his ass back into the box. The umpire has that right. I'm not sure we need new rules, we just need umpires to start enforcing the rules already on the books.
  15. While there are some rather arbitrary lines drawn by some, it's pretty much accepted that if a player has lost rookie status and is on the MLB roster, he is no longer a prospect... He's an MLB player at that point. Weird list is weird.
  16. Stop it, you're making BIlly Beane nervous.
  17. True, but pitching has waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy more impact. It's not even close. You could put me out there and I'd get to 90% of flyballs hit my direction. Put me on the mound and I'd be the first guy to give up 18 consecutive home runs (provided I could get it over the plate often enough to not walk every batter I faced). Fix the biggest problems first. If you have money/space left over - and IMO, the Twins could have shored up both issues this offseason - then fix the smaller problems.
  18. I agree that it should have been addressed, I'm only refuting that it was the disease and not a symptom.
  19. If the defense was the largest contributor to the terrible pitching staff, I'd agree... But it wasn't. The pitching staff looked bad because the pitching staff was bad. Better defense would help the pitching staff somewhat but the rotation won't stop being bad until the starters stop throwing batting practice. Fixing the rotation was the right decision, as it was the actual disease, not the symptom.
  20. I also preferred Interleague being an event instead of a constant throughout the season. I understand why they changed it; having 14 teams in one league and 16 in the other made no sense. I hope that MLB is able to expand relatively soon and fix this somewhat annoying problem.
  21. Even if you do find a "summer job", chances are it's for peanuts because who needs a highly-paid employee for just a few months of the year? It's hard to find short-term development work (under three months) and development is a great fit for short-term employment based on the need employers have to ramp up/down project cycles. And even despite that fact, most employers would rather hire someone to develop 40 hours a week (whether they need it or not) than hire a part-time or temporary employee.
  22. The biggest problem is that MiLB players don't have a seat at the negotiating table. That's a big issue and it's just. plain. wrong. If they can't negotiate more money, so be it... but the fact that they don't get to negotiate is a huge problem. They have one shot to bargain (initial draft signing but even that is now restricted due to slotting) and after that, they're at the conscripted mercy of a boss that gets to control them for a decade. The largest group of employees in an industry making money hand over fist doesn't have anyone looking out for their interests. That needs to change.
  23. Interesting. I always assumed Guardado spoke Spanish, having come from Stockton (large immigrant population not far from central CA farming country).
  24. I completely spaced on this - that'll teach me to not update my bug list regularly enough - and just remembered it this morning. I updated some code on all sites so copy/paste/quote functionality should be working on later versions of Internet Exploder again. Let me know if you continue to have issues with this.
