  1. It's going to take a lot more than five starts to convince another team to take on Ricky's contract. In all likelihood, he either pitches better or the Twins are forced to eat the contract as soon as July. At least one of Berrios and Meyer is going to need MLB rotation time this season, maybe both.
  2. I think "defies logic" is a bit much. Pressly isn't exactly a pitching machine. While I personally would have considered bringing in Perkins - though I may have saved him for the 11th inning - I can't fault Molitor too much for going with Ryan.
  3. I'm a big advocate of "make the other team beat you". They might actually beat you, yes... But they'll have to make a good throw and execute to do it. With Brian Dozier at the plate and Hicks on first, giving Aaron the green light is the right thing to do. If Dozier makes contact with that ball and gets it to the outfield, Hicks has a chance to score. If Dozier doesn't make contact and Aaron successfully steals, you have a guy in scoring position with two outs. It's a smart play in extra innings with a guy on first base.
  4. I would have preferred to see Perkins out there but it's one game. If Molitor makes that same move in ten straight similar situations, then I'll start to get irritated about it.
  5. Oh, definitely. The earliest I see a trade is this offseason, probably later. It all depends on individual performances.
  6. So do we see 2/3rds of our Outfield of the Future start tonight or tomorrow?
  7. At some point, one or two of Vargas, Arcia, and Pinto are going to have to be traded. I hope they all succeed and the Twins can get some value in return for them.
  8. 2013 didn't bother me much, to be honest. What really grated on me was repeating the mistake in 2014.
  9. As I said in a later post, I'm less concerned about Hicks' numbers than I am his approach and mental state. Those are basically impossible to judge from an outside perspective so... *shrugs*
  10. Cruz would have been a nice pickup in 2015 but I'll wait out his decline phase years before declaring that contract a success. I really don't want to see the Twins hand out more contracts to 30+ year old free agents and Cruz is playing his age 34 season this year. It's time to start going young with the roster and while Torii Hunter is old, he's only here for one year (maybe less).
  11. And that's fair. If the coaches think he is ready, then I'll defer to their judgment... But I think calling up Hicks based purely on numbers is a mistake. That kid was a complete mess as recently as last season. If the coaches like his new swing and think his head is in a good spot, then call him up... But we've been through the "Aaron Hicks is ready" dog and pony show too many times already. A little prudence isn't going to hurt in the long run.
  12. The league average OPS is around .710 this season (going from memory here, give or take .010 or .020 points). If Aaron Hicks plays stellar corner OF defense, can OPS over .700, and the Twins get power from the rest of their lineup, then Hicks would be just fine in a corner spot.
  13. It depends on Hicks' production. If he's still doing this in two weeks, I consider a promotion. If he's doing this in mid-June and hasn't received a promotion, then I'll start to wonder what the hell the Twins are thinking. So, to put a number on it, 2-4 weeks if Hicks continues raking in Rochester. Hicks has been very good for three weeks. Given Hicks' recent history, three weeks isn't enough for me and I don't think it's enough to prove anything about Hicks' mental state, though I will defer to the coaching staff there for obvious reasons.
  14. Going into the season, I would have been very happy with third place. This is a development year. If they manage to win during that development, great... But I'm interested in the Twins doing all they can to build sustained success, even if it costs a few wins in 2015.
  15. I see the Twins being forced to move one or more of Vargas, Pinto, or Arcia in the next year or two. The Twins have three players who profile best as DH and a slew of outfield prospects that are better defensively. Something has to give.
  16. I agree that the Twins seem to prioritize veteran "leadership" in weird ways but realistically, the Twins had no internal options for outfield. They needed to pick up someone from outside the organization. I personally wouldn't have chosen Hunter to fill that role but worse decisions could have been made (namely giving a multi-year deal to someone with a ceiling of mediocrity).
  17. Why do some think that Hicks either plays center or is a fourth outfielder? He could play a corner position if he can OPS over .700. A defensive outfield of Rosario, Buxton, and Hicks would be terrifying to opposing batters.
  18. I don't need to see half a season out of Hicks to believe he's a changed man but 19 games hasn't convinced me of anything. I'm glad he's doing well but he needs to show he can hit for a longer period of time and more importantly, coaches need to weigh in on Hicks' mental game before a promotion is handed out. I'm less worried about his ability than I am the grey matter betwixt his ears. That could be today, it could be June. I don't know.
  19. Yep. Great story, not a fit for this team. Imagine how irritated this fanbase would be if Colabello was playing and Vargas was in the minors.
  20. Yeah, I was going to bring this up and forgot. Gardy's recent teams just fell apart later in the season.
  21. Gardy's bullpen management wasn't that bad most of the time... Yeah, he made some inexplicable moves from time to time but most years, he didn't overexpose guys and generally went right/left when he could. Of course, that's not very hard to do but in defense of Gardy, many managers seem incapable of grasping even those simplest of concepts. With that said, Molitor is pretty conservative thus far but you can see him exploring different ideas with the roster. More platooning, Perkins pitching for more than three outs, less roster dead weight. I'm interested to see how he grows as a manager once he gets a little more comfortable with the process.
  22. Really nice piece, Brandon. Hard not to like the things I'm seeing and hearing from Trevor since the season started. The guy looks ready for MLB.
  23. Yeah, the slash line is more meaningful, I was just curious about the actual number of XBH and didn't want other hits polluting the number. Thanks for digging that up, Ash.
  24. I know Escobar should have caught that ball but let's blame the real culprit here: Ricky Nolasco. Half the balls coming off the bat look like they were fired from a cannon.
  25. Oy. Nolasco is getting hammered and having an infielder in left field sure didn't help him there.
