  1. Yeah, we're kinda talking past each other here. I don't expect Arcia to "improve" so much as "stay on the field and mature", which will result in improvement. Whether that's an improvement to a 110 OPS+ player or a 130 OPS+ player, I do not know. He certainly has the talent to be that 130 guy but the dude can't stay on the bloody field for long enough to find out. I agree that his trade return has diminished, though. I think it's mostly due to repeated injury but that's picking nits. The end result is that he's not worth as much today as he was in 2013.
  2. There are several players on Buxton's plane, I will agree with that point... But nobody in MiLB has much more upside than Byron. Again, Buxton is very good at literally everything he does. Those players are incredibly rare. Sano has similar upside to Buxton, though I don't see him being as valuable even if he hits like Miggy. Baseball is littered with players who are extremely good at one or two things. Finding the player who is very good at everything he does, that's a rare specimen and you hold on to that guy. Buxton has the kind of talent that's hard to valuate. He's fantastic in the field. He has a good arm. He can hit for respectable average. He has very good discipline. He's a respectable power hitter. He can swipe bags because he's blindingly fast. If he projects into the player we all expect him to become, he's basically flawless.
  3. That's a sticky situation. You have the following options: 1. Berrios. I don't think Jose is untouchable but he's close. The Twins are putting together a young core of arms that can compete in 2016-2019 but they're missing another #2 pitcher to complement Gibson and May to round out a competent playoff rotation. I think Berrios is that guy so the catcher better be really good to let Jose slip from your grasp. 2. Stewart, Meyer, Thorpe. Their value is diminished right now. Can't move any of those guys. 3. Hu. A long way from MLB. His value is questionable because he's so far from the majors. There isn't a good answer to the question.
  4. I'm in not hurry to trade pitching but that's what it will probably take to get a decent catcher. It takes talent to get talent.
  5. Who? I'm curious because Buxton is the complete package. His upside is Mike Trout. Now there's about a 99% chance that he won't be Mike Trout because that's an absurd expectation for any player but Buxton has that upside. And if your upside the best baseball player I've ever seen play the game, that makes it *really hard* to say there are a bunch of guys with more upside.
  6. Oy. Trading Buxton for a catcher is a fool's game. You're trading a top centerfielder who can play 160 games for a guy who can play maybe 120. Catchers are valuable because of positional scarcity but they suffer the same problem found in trading for starting pitching... Their ability to impact the season is somewhat limited due to the fact they spend a limited amount of time on the field. Nevermind that I don't know if there's a single catcher in MLB or MiLB that I feel is a worthy trade for Buxton. Obviously, there's Posey but that's not going to happen so there you go. Buxton is one of those guys who profiles to be good at literally everything he does. He might not be a generational talent but he's not far from it, either. You don't trade that guy. You just don't.
  7. Absolutely, I'm not saying it's great or anything but he has yet to get into a rhythm and all of his plate appearances came as a 21-23 year old (he went down with injury a few days before his 24th birthday). He might be an oft-injured player and maybe he'll never get into a rhythm but Arcia has loads of talent. He's probably the best pure hitter to come through the Twins system in the past 2-3 years, non Buxton/Sano edition.
  8. Mauer suffered a serious brain injury. We've had this discussion many times and it's a sore subject with many posters. If you wish to discuss it, feel free to find one of the Mauer threads and continue the discussion there but expect polarized responses if you decide to go down that road.
  9. When the guy just barely turned 24, yes, it's pretty good.
  10. Arcia's biggest issue is his frequent stints to the Disabled List, not a lack of talent. Even though he was "scuffling" early this season, he still had an OPS+ of 98 and then, naturally, he got injured and derailed his season. He may turn into an oft-injured player whose value is diminished for it but I don't see him becoming a "bust". If the guy is healthy, he hits. It's that simple.
  11. Boy, I don't see that at all. Arcia isn't Chris Parmelee or another prospect with questionable upside and repeated struggles. The guy can hit and has done so at every level of baseball. His defense is suspect but he's a valid DH candidate even if he can't play the field. Oswaldo is 24 years old with a career .807 OPS against righties. Under no circumstances do you let that guy go for nothing. Fun fact: Oswaldo Arcia has a higher career OPS+ than Trevor Plouffe.
  12. You just pointed out why that's not a valid comparison. If Viciedo was left-handed, he'd be way more valuable than he is right now. Arcia dominates 70% of pitchers. Viciedo dominates 30% of pitchers. Yeah, they're both possible platoon candidates but one is far more valuable than the other. And that's not including the peripherals of the two players, which indicate more potential improvement from Arcia than Viciedo (namely Oswaldo's acceptable .062 isoD to Dayan's meager .044). Viciedo has 1800 MLB PAs to Arcia's 850 MLB PAs. There's a lot of room for Oswaldo to improve, whereas I think Viciedo is who he is (more Delmon Young than Oswaldo Arcia). I understand the comparison but just the left/right difference separate the two players and their value quite a bit. With all that said, I don't see a team like the Padres falling over themselves to acquire Arcia. NL (no DH) with a spacious park that would highlight Arcia's defensive weaknesses.
  13. I'm not sure why the Twins want Zobrist. Yeah, he's a good player but Escobar is just fine in the utility role (if not starting at short) and the Twins don't have room in the OF to get Zobrist enough plate appearances. That's the kind of rental trade I don't want to see the Twins make in July. Ryan shouldn't be pushing the kids out of the lineup, he should find more aggressive ways to get them into the lineup. We need to remove an outfielder - probably Robinson - to clear room for the bats of Arcia, Sano, and possibly Buxton, should he return this season. The Twins have Rosario and Hicks on the roster and probably Buxton in the near future. Robinson should be replaced with a bat, namely Arcia.
  14. Pelfrey won't bring much in return but if he can bring back a competent setup guy, I think you have to make that move.
  15. I don't want Kazmir. I think someone is going to overpay for a guy who hasn't been great outside of O.co. His splits are more than a little terrifying. He's Sandy Koufax in Oakland and entirely pedestrian outside of Oakland.
  16. Well said. It should also be noted that it works on defense, too. The better team is generally superior in preventing runs, which has the same negative effect on the inferior team.
  17. Yep. The only way this makes even a little bit of sense is that May's arm was tiring AND Ryan plans to move Pelfrey or Milone at the deadline.
  18. That's fair. He has things left to learn but his bat could help the team today and his offense needs to grow at the MLB level, not AAA. He's just teeing off down there... Again. Ultimately, I think it's a moot point because Minnesota needs someone to replace Sano. Arcia is the logical choice.
  19. It wouldn't surprise me if the Twins are hesitant about his glove but Oswaldo has nothing to learn in Rochester. After struggling to come back after his injury, he has posted a 1.234 OPS in July. The Twins need that guy on their roster. If he's going to sink or swim, it's going to happen in Minnesota, not Rochester. The guy has absolutely demolished AAA pitching three times in three seasons. He needs to stick in Minnesota.
  20. Yeah, pretty much all of this. I generally skew on the conservative side when it comes to prospects and development but Arcia doesn't need to be handled with kid gloves. Arcia's biggest problem is staying on the field and his hitting "issues" are way overblown on this board. For all the teeth-gnashing over Oswaldo's flaws, he had a 98 OPS+ in a short stint this season and has a career 103 OPS+. That's not a guy you need to molly-coddle. You need to get him MLB at-bats as often as possible, especially if you're contending because that's a valuable bat to have on the team. Are we really worried that Oswaldo is going to miss out on learning how to crush AAA hitting for the fourth time? Already seen that, thanks. I'm pretty sure he has a handle on AAA pitching at this point, as evidenced by his .900-ish OPS over ~430-ish PAs in Rochester.
  21. And that's okay. He's a 24 year old with a career 103 OPS+. Why is everyone so scared to let that guy hit?
  22. The first part is hard but not impossible. LOL at the second part.
  23. Winnah 50 times. Game #: 2015: 90 2014: 110 2013: 112 2012: 115 2011: 106 Now a full 16 games ahead of the 2011 squad.
  24. It's hard to say "for good reason" when you look at the Twins bullpen. I'm pretty forgiving of the front office's decisions but they simply haven't done as much as they could in regards to the pen.
