  1. I believe a lot of that was thrown out with the expanded universe. For example, different sects of the Jedi order were defined by their lightsaber color. Then came the prequels and all of that was thrown or the window thanks to Windu and his purple saber.
  2. The point is that Star Wars is fantasy/mythology and breaks down under scrutiny because it's not intended for critical examination. It makes no attempt to explain the world in favor of creating a sense of awe within the audience. Which is why the midichlorians were such a colossal mistake. 1977 George Lucas knew that but 1999 George Lucas somehow forgot it. It's also why Star Wars should never be categorized as science fiction.
  3. I just shrugged and said "whatever, it's Star Wars" but they actually didn't have the rest of the map on-hand. Threepio mentioned Artoo did not have the map but he obviously did. In typical Artoo fashion, it appears he refused to tell anyone about it.
  4. The producers implied they were going to burn the old expanded universe to the ground with the announcement of Ep VII and I'm glad they did it. I liked parts of the expanded universe but it was cluttered with a lot of crap. I didn't think there was a plot hole with Luke and Kylo at all... To me, it was pretty obvious Luke didn't try to fight Kylo. As you said, Luke would have handed him his ass. I liked the Kylo character. He's a petulant little brat who is tearing himself apart. It should be a fun story to follow. As for Rey fighting Kylo to a stalemate, that was a bit of a stretch but not completely without reason: 1. Rey had been on her own for quite some time and displayed she was a competent fighter. 2. The name of the movie is "The Force Awakens". To me, it was rather apparent Rey (and possibly Finn) were that awakening as the Force seeks to re-establish some kind of balance. On top of that, it appears Snoke has not trained Kylo or the other Rens much, possibly to keep them in check.
  5. I quite like Terry Ryan (most of the time). I think he's a conservative GM who excels at applying a steady hand during a rebuild. And AA is still a young GM. While I'm not convinced he's great today, he's intriguing enough that I think he could be great tomorrow, especially if he has a mentor like Ryan for a few years and sees how the "other side" (read "conservative") does it.
  6. While it's a gamble to roll out a "crafty" starter for a prolonged period of time, Milone has pitched 614 innings as a starter, almost entirely in the American League. If teams don't have a solid book on the guy by now, everyone is asleep at the wheel. But I agree with your point to an extent. Milone has little to no wiggle room as a pitcher. If he loses a MPH or feel for a pitch, things won't just go bad... It'll be disastrous. He's Nick Blackburn Redux at that point. Which is part of the reason why I believe he should be traded, even if the return is modest. The other part of my reasoning was mentioned in a previous post... The Twins already have a slew of Milones in the rotation and Tommy is one of the few who might have some trade value.
  7. We've talked about AA in past threads and while I remain unconvinced he's a great (or even good) GM, I would welcome him coming into the organization with the idea he'd supplant Ryan when he retires (provided everyone plays nicely together). It's the type of move that could make everyone happy: the organization gets an outside voice with a different approach while the Twins get to fold AA into their organizational system slowly over a year or two. And while Minnesota isn't a "sexy" gig, there are few teams who I'd rather be "GM in Training" for right now. They've graduated a ton of young players, have more on the way, and the system is still in pretty good shape. It's a great opportunity with a high chance of success right off the bat.
  8. I'm no Milone fan - I'd like to see him traded - but you're really underselling the guy here. He's lining up as the fifth starter on the team: a 29 year old lefty with a career 99 ERA+ and a 4.30 FIP, 4.22 xFIP. As someone else said, if you're rolling out what looks to be a league-average guy as your fifth starter, you're probably doing okay for yourself. The Mets rolled (literally, rolled) Colon out for 30-ish starts last season and Niese for 30-ish starts. I seem to remember them playing pretty late in the season. We all love upside. I'd prefer to see May in the rotation; I think it's the smart long-term move. But you're not giving Milone the credit he deserves. He is a league average guy on the right side of 30 years old. He's not going to kill the team by taking the mound every fifth day. The problem isn't Tommy Milone (but, again, I'd try to move him), it's the rest of the rotation. Almost everybody is a Tommy Milone in this rotation, though a couple of them don't have Milone's age or handed-ness on their side.
  9. I'm assuming another acceptable pen arm is picked up before the season and Park posts a .750-ish OPS. I think 83 wins is a decent prediction.
  10. I haven't really researched it but my understanding is JJ got a season, Cage gets a season, Iron Fist gets a season, then they all combine for a multi-season series in The Defenders.
  11. And let's not forget that presidential elections are not won with a partisan vote. The "big, quiet middle" will skew bright blue if You-know-who manages to win the nomination (which he probably won't, making all of this moot).
  12. I stated that most women and PoC are not republican. Do what you will with that information. Personally, I find the GOP platform of chipping away at abortion rights disgusting and until they reel in that segment of the party, they're going to continue to struggle with the female vote. As for the PoC vote, I don't believe the GOP has a snowball's chance in hell of getting that vote (outside of the Hispanic vote, which somewhat aligns with the religious ideals of the GOP but given their immigration policy, probably not).
  13. She wasn't inferring that at all. She was arguing the GOP platform is damaging to women and PoC. You may disagree but given that most women and an overwhelming majority of PoC do not self-identify as republican, the people in question seem to agree with ChiTown.
  14. Instead of accusing Voldemort of being a political mole in an attempt to distance him from modern conservatism, you should take a moment to examine what modern conservatism has become and why you try so hard to defend it. Whether you want to admit it or not, Voldermort's policies are popular with conservatives. This is not my opinion, nor is it up for debate. It is reality. Instead of trying to deflect this reality in a vain attempt to justify your support, maybe it's time to take a hard look at what the GOP has become and reconsider why you support these people and their horrific policy. It's what I was forced to do ten years ago.
  15. Between BB-8 and Chewie, your five year old will probably make it through the movie.
  16. Something like 65% of his supporters self-indentify as conservative. Your opinion does not jive with reality.
  17. I'd give it an 8/10, I think. It's good but has some warts. At moments when you're really getting into the new characters - which are stellar across the board - Abrams tears you away from them to go on a nostalgia trip with the original cast. It's fine the first couple of times but wears thin by the end of the movie. But man, some of those characters and plot points. I don't see how Episode VIII isn't going to be incredible. If nothing else, Abrams set up the rest of the trilogy to succeed. The most surprising - and impressive - thing about the movie is that Abrams and Kasdan made me care more about the new characters than I did the old characters. If Star Wars is going to succeed going forward, it needs new characters and they delivered on that front.
  18. Good movie. I'll leave it at that for now.
  19. Anyone who dislikes Mauer more than AP needs a serious reality check.
  20. Well, you might get lucky. I've been to several Thursday night pre-releases and oddly enough, the public hasn't really picked up on the fact they exist yet. Even highly anticipated movies like Avengers 2 didn't have enormous lines on Thursday. Though if that's going to change, this is the movie that will do it.
  21. I'm leaving later than I'd like for my 7pm showing (4pm). My suggestion would be to get there before the post-work crowd has time to line up. I'm shooting for 4:15-4:30, though if it was my call, I'd be there at 3pm.
  22. While I don't like the defensive alignment the Twins look to put in the outfield in 2016, I think people are forgetting just how little we saw the "good" defensive alignment in 2015. Hicks played in only 97 games. Rosario played in 122. Buxton played in only 46 games. Meanwhile, the desiccated corpse of Torii Hunter played 123 OF games. Last year's team had a lot of OF defensive potential but we didn't get to see that much of it on the actual field.
  23. It's a mostly irrational fear though not entirely irrational. The closest situation to this happening is when the IRS threatened to revoke the Mormon Church's tax exempt status when they refused to allow black people into the priesthood, though I'm not sure if that is urban legend or reality. The details are murky and it may not have happened at all. But there was legal precedent for that happening. Race is a federally protected class in America. Sexual preference is not. Until sexual preference becomes federally protected - and I think we're quite a ways from that happening, though I'd be in favor of it - I don't see this fear becoming a reality.
  24. Also, I will change this thread title and add SPOILERS after tomorrow when more people have a chance to see it so if you don't want to know what happens, don't follow this thread after tomorrow. Anyone who posts spoilers before Saturday after people had a legit shot to watch the movie will receive a warning point. No, not joking. Don't be a dick and ruin the most anticipated movie of the year for those who are excited about it.
