  1. Nope. He could be a touch better than he was in 2015 with more rest between games but really, he is who he is. I'm one of the few who didn't think the Suzuki contract was terrible. He was a stopgap catcher when the Twins had literally no depth at the position. But not as a starter. He's a backup.
  2. You're right, he's a Democrat... Which is why he agrees with the Democrat party line on all the issues. It's why Democrats are lining up to slightly tweak Trump's approach to immigrants and refugees to get a leg up on the rest of the party. It's why Trump's supporters are registered Democrats. Have I made my point yet?
  3. You understand how elections are actually won, right? Presidential elections are not won by the partisan vote.
  4. He might be able to beat Clinton in a general but I believe the GOP base has skewed its politicians so far to the right that it will be hard to walk back to center in November. And as much as I dislike Clinton's politics, she's a woman and a damn polished politician who excels in debate. I think that will play well with enough moderates to win her the job, as much as it pains me to say it. IMO, she's more palatable and less dangerous to the country than most of the GOP field but I just can't trust the woman. I have no idea what she actually stands for as a person.
  5. I don't hate Chris Christie. I don't see an election where I vote for the guy but he's had enough stand-up moments where I don't entirely despise him. I want to like Rubio but the guy is simply too socially conservative for my liking... But, overall, I think he's probably the best chance of a GOP victory because, as you said, Kasich has no shot at the nomination.
  6. I think Rubio has a better shot than Cruz. Rubio will have an easier time swinging a *few* moderates his way and he has a better shot at drawing a larger segment of the Hispanic voting bloc. Plus, he has Florida in his pocket, one of the most important swing states. I don't think either has a good chance to win a general election, though... Especially Cruz, whose policy isn't only at odds with a large segment of America, his policy is downright despised by a large segment of the population. Rubio can walk back from a few of his policies and rally a few moderates. I don't think Cruz can do that, as he's been publicly trumpeting some really bad ideas for a long time. The only GOP candidates I believe are centrist enough to make a run are Kasich and Christie but both have significant warts... Then again, so do Hillary and Bernie. It will be an interesting 4-5 months leading to Super Tuesday.
  7. Winning a state election and a national election aren't the same thing. The most populated areas of this country are blue by default. It's hard to win the preisdency without NY, CA, IL, etc. Bush won because he was somewhat moderate and because the Democrats rolled out some truly laughable candidates to oppose him. In today's social environment, I struggle to see a "true" republican win because their social platform isn't palatable with the majority of America. I know it's the reason I went from voting mostly republican to splitting votes to not voting republican at all in the span of a decade.
  8. No one is a lock in their 20s. See Santana, Johan.
  9. Pitchers are fickle. I don't know if there's a lock to make the HoF right now. Maybe Sabathia. HoF pitchers only seem to separate themselves from the very good once they hit 33-34 years old. It's about prolonged play as much as it is about dominance. I wouldn't even call Verlander a probable at this point. Greinke has a better shot than Justin.
  10. This thread is titled "the best", not "one of the best". Griffey was an amazing player but he wasn't in the class of Mays, Williams, Ruth, etc. He's just a tick below those guys. But when he was 28 years old, he had a shot to be THE best. Maybe an outside shot but he had a shot.
  11. No arguments here. His actions were deplorable but at least he had the decency to not vilify 1.5-ish billion people.
  12. Because they have a starting catcher that's better, a 22 year old prospect who looks ready for MLB, and because Aaron Hicks was fair value? It's hardly a fair comparison.
  13. Very low. While Trout's talent level is phenomenal and the kind we see one or twice a generation, it will require prolonged play at this level to reach that vaunted status. Ken Griffey Jr was on a similar career arc to Trout and we all know how that turned out in his 30s. Trout has the talent, now it's the luck of the draw and genetics. Can he stay healthy and beat the effects of aging?
  14. 1. Triton is a moon of Neptune, not Saturn. 2. As a satellite entity, Triton isn't that much smaller than Mars, which would make a collision... Interesting, to say the least. Luna is extremely large in proportion to Earth, which is just one oddity of many in our solar system. 3. Here's a handy scale of the solar system. He wants to move a moon - not sure how that feat would be accomplished - a distance equivalent to traveling from the earth to the sun 30 times. Dream big, Jose. Dream big.
  15. What happens if Mars builds a really big wall to keep us out?
  16. Eh, he had a decent year in 2014, though it was only 90 PAs. The guy was rushed to the majors and then didn't get much in the way of playing time. In the little time he has received, he has displayed competence with the bat.
  17. He's far from perfect but at least he's shown some level of competence at the MLB level.
  18. My problem revolves around Eddie's approach. If he continues his 2015 approach, his numbers will decline. Swinging at 60% of the pitches thrown your way is not a sustainable approach. If he starts being more selective, he should be able to improve over his rookie campaign... But I'm not sure how likely that is to happen. Or unlikely it is to happen, really.
  19. To be fair, it appeared the door on the catcher market slammed shut approximately 2.3 seconds after it opened. Nobody expected Wieters to accept the QO and Pierzynski resigning with Atlanta that quickly was somewhat surprising. Without the recent Padres acquisition, the door would still be mostly closed and nobody in their right mind would have predicted SD picking up another catcher this offseason. Like or dislike the trade, a GM should not be criticized for attempting to shore up the team's biggest problem at a position of extreme scarcity early in the offseason. If he went and picked up three Blaine Boyers in early November, yeah, you absolutely tear a GM to shreds for that move... But not for picking up a catcher when the position is an organizational problem from top to bottom. There are situations where you sit back and let the market unfold before committing to a player... But that situation rarely involves catcher, especially when the catching situation was as bad as it was for the Twins.
  20. Sure, but it means the guy has a long way to go to become a productive MLB player. I have huge concerns about Rosario but at least he put up solid power numbers. If he makes contact, it's good contact. Eddie is also a year younger and is a very good, maybe great, defender. Again, I think Bethancourt is a good project player for a rebuilding team. That doesn't fit with what the Twins are trying to do this season and Bethancourt has to stay on the 25 man roster, as he's out of options.
  21. Last season, Bethancourt swung at 1.7% more pitches than Eddie Rosario. Ouch.
  22. My sentiments as well. On paper, it was a fair trade. Now it's going to take on-field results to determine the winner and loser of the deal (or both could be winners/losers). Not a huge fan of the deal but it's now up to the scouts and players.
  23. That's my biggest problem with the way things *appear* to be shaking out this offseason. I don't want to see Trevor May permanently shifted to the bullpen. I think he has the talent to be a starter. But with Meyer and Burdi in the org, I'm not against the Twins banking on one of them stepping forward at some point in 2016. IMO, they can pick up a RHRP who is only "acceptable" and hope/pray one of those guys dominates out of the gate and gets a promotion. My biggest worry is LHRP.
  24. No disagreements about previous years. The Twins have chosen the back end of their 40 man rosters in ways I do not understand. I'm not giving the team a pass, I simply don't understand the gnashing of teeth over Jones. Yeah, I'd prefer to have him in the org but I'm not going to get too riled up about it, either. I guess my problem boils down to this: every decision can not be judged as right or wrong the moment it happens, particularly as we have very limited information available to us as fans. In time, this may prove to be a big mistake by Ryan. Or it may turn out Ryan is right and Jones wasn't worth protecting. I'll sit back and wait for the results and avoid prognostication. Getting all hot and bothered about it right now seems a bit silly (and it seems you agree). And if it turns out Ryan is right and Jones is destined for failure, will everyone who vocally complained about the move retract their bashing of Ryan? There's a lot to dislike about Ryan and how he runs an organization but I don't think this move is one of those moments.
  25. I said he was intriguing, I only questioned his upside. So did everyone else, as he was passed over by every team once in the Rule V draft. Again, I wouldn't have kept Dean... But this thread is how many pages long now? About a guy who struggled in AA as a 24 year old? It's entirely possible Jones has little to no chance of reaching his upside, as the team who has seen him more than anyone else didn't protect him and every team in baseball passed over him in the first round.
