  1. Losing Michael will sting a bit. He has really turned it around the past two seasons.
  2. Yeah, you're probably right. The rules during this time of year are odd and to be frank, I don't care enough to go look them up because it doesn't matter.
  3. I think it's a bit more complicated than that. My ACA premium has skyrocketed two consecutive years and I only opted for a catastrophic plan. The ACA is better than what we had before but it's so flawed it may not be salvageable in the long term. As much as I loathe government overreach and control of markets, I don't see a viable alternative to our healthcare situation that doesn't involve a single-payer system.
  4. It's a decent idea but I struggle to believe any government in the world could handle the pressure of upholding legislation that would be costly and mostly ineffective for 30+ years. That's 5-6 administrations. Hell, most public corporations struggle to implement plans that appear ineffective for five years but will pay off handsomely in the long run. Carson, for all intents and purposes, is proposing a health Social Security and we all know what Congress did with SS funds the moment they had the chance.
  5. Don't be ridiculous, Mike. The guy is brown.
  6. Without being there, I can't fault people for not interjecting. I've seen situations like this in the past and didn't interject simply because it happened so quickly. Your thoughts are elsewhere and you don't notice the situation is escalating. You hear something, turn, and it takes a few seconds to process what's happening. You spend the next few seconds shocked, still unsure whether you're interpreting the situation correctly. Then it ends just as you realize something terrible is happening. Maybe that wasn't the case but I can't fault bystanders without being there to see how it unfolded. But yeah, security probably should have tossed the dude out on his ass.
  7. I generally refrain from reading the second half of the internet but every once in a while, I need to be slapped back into the reality that people suck and say horrible, bigoted, racist things to one another and will defend their regressive viewpoint to the very end. I don't have people like that in my real life. I've either distanced myself from them or they've gone underground, knowing I will lay into them if they say **** like that to my face. It's important to occasionally get a reminder why it's important to fight.
  8. I saw it earlier this morning. The comments section is appalling and says a lot about the state of this country.
  9. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe 40 man rosters were locked down a few weeks ago.
  10. Castro wasn't terrible last year. He posted a .8 WAR and an OPS+ of 83. Yeah, that's below average, maybe even bad... But it's not terrible for a middle infielder. He's entering his age 26 season and has a decent track record. I think he's a good candidate to take the Carlos Gomez path to success (though it's unlikely he'll be an MVP candidate at any point). On the other hand, Warren is a pretty good pitcher but he's far from spectacular and much of his 2015 WAR came from starting. Do we really expect him to start in Chicago?
  11. God, what has happened to us? I mean, THIS GUY made this speech. THIS GUY. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygTbwGrTELc
  12. Someone I follow on Twitter said this and it's frighteningly true of modern America: "I never thought I'd say it but I miss the quiet, intellectual dignity of George W. Bush."
  13. Agreed, which is why I generally refrain from using the word "bigot" unless I feel it's entirely obvious (Voldemort). From what I've read and heard about our vetting process, it's one of the most rigorous in the world, if not the most rigorous. And if people still believe it's not rigorous enough, propose change. Improve the system. Come at the situation with real solutions. Locking innocent people out of the country because you're afraid of a few bad apples is not a solution. In fact, it's an anti-solution. It only fosters more hatred between the involved parties, which leads to more... you guessed it, actual terrorists. The word I will continue to use is demagoguery. America has fallen prey to rampant demagoguery. One side more than the other but both are certainly guilty of espousing it. We've stopped analyzing situations in favor of being scared of them and ramping up populace fears for political gain. It's embarrassing.
  14. It's too bad the Diamondbacks don't need a third basemen. Given what just happened with the Braves, Ryan could get half their farm system for Plouffe.
  15. I'm not so sure it's unlike the Martinez deal. Obviously, Zobrist is the better athlete (by a country mile) but hitting - particularly power hitting - is usually the last skill to leave a player. Martinez is a good example of just how quickly a player can collapse as he ages into his mid 30s. Ben Zobrist WAR over the past several years: 2011: 6.3 2012: 5.8 2013: 5.0 2014: 5.5 2015: 2.1 He was down on PAs a bit last season but what really killed him is that his defense went from a big positive to a big negative. Now, obviously, these are the Cubs. I'm sure they metric-ed the **** out of his 2015 season but there are legitimate reasons to be concerned about Zobrist from 2016-2019.
  16. I saw that earlier. A horrible situation, to be sure. And then I read the comments. Any respect I had for America - Minnesotans in particular - dropped to nearly zero.
  17. There's just so much fear and so little common sense (and decency) being applied to this situation. Candidates are literally politicking with other peoples' lives right now and it's disgusting. ISIS is not going to attempt to go through the refugee process to get into America and if they tried something so idiotic, they'll almost surely be caught in the process. Our refugee immigration system is one of the most rigorous and difficult methods to reach America. Any competent member of ISIS is going to use one of the many less difficult routes to reach America or they'll simply enter illegally.
  18. Probably not. They have the funds to eat that back end of that contract but when coupled with the Castro trade, I'm not a fan of what they did yesterday.
  19. People are scared and that's understandable... But if we've learned anything in our history, it's that fear shouldn't drive policy, especially when millions of innocent people are in imminent danger. Those people need our help. We have the ability to help them. If that's not what America is about, I don't want to call myself an American. I'm disappointed, to say the least. The small-minded nature of recent American policy doesn't hold with the (probably naive) ideals I hold for this country.
  20. Ish. I'd be pretty upset if I was a Cubs fan. I don't care for either the return on Castro or Zobrist at $56m over four years. Zobrist has been a great player but the Cubs are getting him for his age 35-38 seasons. Not a lot to like at that age and price point.
  21. Outright bigotry, yes. But some of the GOP candidates aren't above using some of the same fear-mongering tactics Voldemort is proposing, only on a lesser scale. Ted Cruz is calling to "suspend for three years refugees from countries where ISIS or al-Qaida control a substantial amount of territory". I've become pretty depressed about this situation. I'm truly embarrassed for my country. We're supposed to be better than this. We're supposed to help people who need help. It's what we're supposed to believe in as a nation, so much that it's emblazoned on our most iconic national ****ing monument. ****. I'm just so ****ing depressed about this. http://www.npr.org/2015/12/09/458973053/cruz-wont-criticize-trump-but-offers-his-own-plan-to-bar-refugees
  22. Oh, I fully agree people who support the man feel slighted in some way. But I still believe they're stupid, as they've routinely voted against their own interests for the past several decades. I'm not sure what outcome these people expected as we rolled back taxes, deregulated corporate and financial sectors, weakened labor rights, and created a system that slowly eats away at the middle class. Yet here we are, arguing over Muslim refugees. What is happening with Voldemort is the very definition of demagoguery. While the country goes to hell in a handbasket around us, we're talking about immigrant rapists (and some, I assume, are good people).
  23. I read something recently that 75% of the people in Iowa - much less the rest of the country - haven't even begun to think about the election or haven't made a decision who to support yet. The people who have made a decision and are vocal on both sides of the aisle in support of either Voldemort or Sanders are the most extreme elements of their respective parties. They do not reflect the viewpoints of the big, quiet middle. That big middle will start to weigh in around February and the polls will start to change dramatically when it happens. And Voldemort is going to have a very active enemy that will start to throw around its weight in the coming months. That enemy is the Republican Party itself. The movers and shakers of the GOP know a Voldemort nomination will reduce their party to a laughing stock in November and they will do everything in their power to stop that from happening. That means governors refusing to support Voldemort. That means Senators and Representatives throwing their support to establishment candidates. That means big party money going to support the likes of Rubio, Christie, whomever. The two party system of this country doesn't only prevent a third party from rising to power. It also prevents anti-establishment candidates to gain traction if the party doesn't like them. And the party hates Voldemort.
  24. Have they started writing about it? Cool. I checked in occasionally but they hadn't written anything of substance that I could find... But it's been at least a month since I checked.
