  1. Keep that in mind next time you feel outraged about a call. In the eyes of every fan, their team gets shafted by umps. It's so boring. Yeah, individual calls suck. It happens. Phil Cuzzi is still an idiot. Those examples are few and far between.
  2. Kepler mentioned Molitor said he'll be hitting second against righties on a regular basis. Man, Molitor is aggressive with this lineup. I still question Buxton at third but I appreciate the aggressiveness.
  3. The 2016 Twins won their third game in their twelfth outing. The 2017 Twins won their third game in their third outing.
  4. I'm starting to suspect the Royals will be in full firesale mode come July. All those expiring contracts need to net them something at the deadline.
  5. Looking forward to seeing some hot left field action this afternoon.
  6. It's very fair. Listen, if DrNeau doesn't want to be rebutted over his opinion on a single plate appearance that resulted in a walk, he shouldn't write a throwaway post that talked exclusively about that single plate appearance. Action, reaction. If you don't like the reaction, evaluate the action that caused it. We've been around the Mauer conversation several dozen times in this forum. There are literally thousands of posts on the subject. DrNeau chooses to go to the Mauer well time and time again, stating the same opinions. We get it. Imagine if I hated Danny Santana with a fiery passion, so much that I created threads multiple times a season and spent 40% of my time on this forum complaining about Danny Santana. Would you get tired of reading that tripe? Yeah, of course you would because it's repetitive and boring. There are 24 other people on this roster. Give it a rest with the Mauer hate.
  7. I don't really care whether Pence will be alone with a woman that isn't his wife but it's a pretty damning indictment of his value system: that women aren't people and are something to be avoided to keep one's self "pure". And that value decision is in lock-step with his public policy so it's not some weird character flaw: it's fully ingrained into his person. With that said, Pence is so actively a giant douchemonster about so many things that I don't really care about this much at all, it's just another check in the column of "****ty belief structures".
  8. Yep, I was all in favor of starting him at the bottom and forcing him to work his way up the lineup. I hope he succeeds in the three spot but the first two games are a good example of why I didn't want him at the top of the lineup in the first place. But this entire lineup is so whacky that I don't know if I'd be hitting anyone where Molitor has put them.
  9. And to clarify, I think we all roll our eyes on occasion when Mauer steps to the plate and puts the bat on his shoulder for the first pitch. Sometimes it's the right thing to do but sometimes, it's infuriating. It's fine to criticize Mauer; I suspect we all have our own personal gripes about his hitting style. Personally, I'd like to see him start making a legitimate attempt to pull the ball on occasion, even if it results in a few more swings and misses. I'd also like to see him just swing at the first damned pitch on occasion. If I built a lineup, Mauer is definitely not my cleanup hitter. No question about that. But when the same posters make the same complaints about the same players, it's tiresome. We get it. You don't like Mauer much and dislike his plate approach. We know. How do we know? You've already told us 100 times. So maybe it's time to go ahead and start a thread about literally anyone else in the Twins organization and get the hell off Mauer's back for a minute.
  10. It's not a smear tactic when you're the one who first brought up and complained about the plate appearance. You literally complained about a run-scoring walk. Full stop.
  11. You and I have very different definitions of the word "hammer". It was a nice hit with nice contact. Again, it was also against a right-handed pitcher.
  12. 1. I challenge you to find where I called the Opening Day pitch "unhittable". 2. Take a gander at which hand the pitcher is wearing his glove. No pitch is entirely "unhittable", particularly a pitch in the strike zone... but there are low probability pitches and high probability pitches. A same-handed batter swinging at a pitch tailing away in the lower quarter of the zone is not a high probability pitch. The best case scenario is a hit down the line or looping it over the third baseman's head and even that's hard to pull off. Swing at that pitch 100 times and even the best hitters will put it on the ground more often than not.
  13. I just grabbed a heatmap of a readily available player to show that's a hard place to hit the ball with authority. I'd have to dig up my login credentials to find a heatmap for Mauer specifically.
  14. The 2017 Minnesota Twins have scored 16 runs in 18 innings. The 2016 Minnesota Twins scored their 16th run in their 97th inning. Woof.
  15. This one is a doozy: The 2017 Twins scored 10 runs in their first 11 innings of play. The 2016 Twins scored 10 runs in their first 50 innings of play.
  16. I don't see the point in replacing Mauer with Kepler against a righty. I agree that positional flexibility is an issue but it's not between Mauer and Kepler at first base. They're pretty close to the same guy and bat same-handed. What this team needs is someone like Park to offset Grossman and Mauer. It's a crazy idea but maybe the Twins should replace Danny Santana with Byung Ho Park and see what happens.* *While I understand the desire to see Park take AAA reps before re-adding him to the 40 man, I hope this is the ultimate outcome and that it happens relatively soon** **I'm also okay with Vargas replacing Santana*** ***Hell, I'm okay with Nick Nelson replacing Santana
  17. For the record, I think we'd all like to see Mauer be more aggressive when he gets "his" pitch. My real point in this thread is that pitch was very much not "his" pitch. That was the pitcher's pitch. Good hitters don't force an outcome on a pitcher's pitch because, if they did that regularly, they'd cease to be good hitters.* *Vlad Guerrero, as usual, is exempted from this statement due to the fact he was Vlad Guerrero
  18. Agreed, but it's the second game of the season, which is the only reason we're making a fuss about this. If it was June 3rd, we'd shrug it off and largely ignore the move. Again, if it becomes a trend, then I'll start to question it.
  19. I'M OUTRAGED Seriously, though, I don't like the idea of sitting Polanco already but I can get behind this decision somewhat no matter why they're making the decision. Escobar was a competent shortstop just two seasons ago. He deserves some plate appearances either way. And it's the second game of the season. If this becomes a trend and a detriment to Jorge, then maybe it'll start to irk me.
  20. Yeah, it was colloquially referred to as "2014".
  21. Yeah, I'm super-curious to know where the idea for these lineups originated. And also telling how I'd view the lineups differently with that information in hand.
  22. Sure, Mauer *could* make contact with the pitch but it's the kind of pitch that usually turns into an out. Even if Mauer is somehow able to elevate that pitch, the ball likely ends up in the left fielder's glove. No matter how you look at it, the chances of "hammering" that pitch are low. Make contact? Sure. Hammer? No, not so much. As you said, that's a pitcher's pitch... And swinging at a pitcher's pitch is a good way to create an out. That doesn't mean it's an automatic out - anything can happen in baseball - but it's a low probability pitch. And we shouldn't criticize hitters for taking a low probability pitch, especially against a new pitcher who missed the zone by over a foot with the previous pitch.
  23. June 31st because that's how much I care about "pull a number out of your ass and post it" contests.
  24. I don't know if Falvey is employing these ideas but I'm starting to suspect this is the case. Think about the decision to hire Thad Levine. Yeah, he's a highly regarded exec who deserved the job but he's closer to Terry Ryan than he is Theo Epstein. Why that choice? Don't get me wrong, I liked the choice, but it's a bit outside the box if the organization plans to play by the conventional sabr playbook.
