  1. I'm in not hurry to trade pitching but that's what it will probably take to get a decent catcher. It takes talent to get talent.
  2. Who? I'm curious because Buxton is the complete package. His upside is Mike Trout. Now there's about a 99% chance that he won't be Mike Trout because that's an absurd expectation for any player but Buxton has that upside. And if your upside the best baseball player I've ever seen play the game, that makes it *really hard* to say there are a bunch of guys with more upside.
  3. Oy. Trading Buxton for a catcher is a fool's game. You're trading a top centerfielder who can play 160 games for a guy who can play maybe 120. Catchers are valuable because of positional scarcity but they suffer the same problem found in trading for starting pitching... Their ability to impact the season is somewhat limited due to the fact they spend a limited amount of time on the field. Nevermind that I don't know if there's a single catcher in MLB or MiLB that I feel is a worthy trade for Buxton. Obviously, there's Posey but that's not going to happen so there you go. Buxton is one of those guys who profiles to be good at literally everything he does. He might not be a generational talent but he's not far from it, either. You don't trade that guy. You just don't.
  4. Absolutely, I'm not saying it's great or anything but he has yet to get into a rhythm and all of his plate appearances came as a 21-23 year old (he went down with injury a few days before his 24th birthday). He might be an oft-injured player and maybe he'll never get into a rhythm but Arcia has loads of talent. He's probably the best pure hitter to come through the Twins system in the past 2-3 years, non Buxton/Sano edition.
  5. Mauer suffered a serious brain injury. We've had this discussion many times and it's a sore subject with many posters. If you wish to discuss it, feel free to find one of the Mauer threads and continue the discussion there but expect polarized responses if you decide to go down that road.
  6. When the guy just barely turned 24, yes, it's pretty good.
  7. Arcia's biggest issue is his frequent stints to the Disabled List, not a lack of talent. Even though he was "scuffling" early this season, he still had an OPS+ of 98 and then, naturally, he got injured and derailed his season. He may turn into an oft-injured player whose value is diminished for it but I don't see him becoming a "bust". If the guy is healthy, he hits. It's that simple.
  8. Boy, I don't see that at all. Arcia isn't Chris Parmelee or another prospect with questionable upside and repeated struggles. The guy can hit and has done so at every level of baseball. His defense is suspect but he's a valid DH candidate even if he can't play the field. Oswaldo is 24 years old with a career .807 OPS against righties. Under no circumstances do you let that guy go for nothing. Fun fact: Oswaldo Arcia has a higher career OPS+ than Trevor Plouffe.
  9. You just pointed out why that's not a valid comparison. If Viciedo was left-handed, he'd be way more valuable than he is right now. Arcia dominates 70% of pitchers. Viciedo dominates 30% of pitchers. Yeah, they're both possible platoon candidates but one is far more valuable than the other. And that's not including the peripherals of the two players, which indicate more potential improvement from Arcia than Viciedo (namely Oswaldo's acceptable .062 isoD to Dayan's meager .044). Viciedo has 1800 MLB PAs to Arcia's 850 MLB PAs. There's a lot of room for Oswaldo to improve, whereas I think Viciedo is who he is (more Delmon Young than Oswaldo Arcia). I understand the comparison but just the left/right difference separate the two players and their value quite a bit. With all that said, I don't see a team like the Padres falling over themselves to acquire Arcia. NL (no DH) with a spacious park that would highlight Arcia's defensive weaknesses.
  10. I'm not sure why the Twins want Zobrist. Yeah, he's a good player but Escobar is just fine in the utility role (if not starting at short) and the Twins don't have room in the OF to get Zobrist enough plate appearances. That's the kind of rental trade I don't want to see the Twins make in July. Ryan shouldn't be pushing the kids out of the lineup, he should find more aggressive ways to get them into the lineup. We need to remove an outfielder - probably Robinson - to clear room for the bats of Arcia, Sano, and possibly Buxton, should he return this season. The Twins have Rosario and Hicks on the roster and probably Buxton in the near future. Robinson should be replaced with a bat, namely Arcia.
  11. I don't care if Joe hits .300 for the season. If he hits .300 for the second half of the season and posts an OPS around .800, that's a good indication the old Joe Mauer is back going into 2016. And that's far more important to the long term than .300 in 2015.
  12. We're hosting a contest for anyone who wants to write a few words about the Vikings and their upcoming season. The best entries will win a spot on our party bus heading down to Mankato on July 25th. Interested? Check out the details courtesy of Bo Mitchell: http://vikingsjournal.com/_/minnesota-vikings-news/minnesota-vikings/vikings-journal-kickoff-party-in-mankato-r616
  13. I'm watching the game now and that comment is really unfair (and you probably know it). Pelfrey pitched a pretty good game. He limited the Tigers to three runs over 7 2/3 innings. That fourth run is all on Boyer. He had one job to do and he failed to execute. Pelfrey wasn't amazing but there's no way you can watch that game and pin the loss on him. He did his job.
  14. I would be thrilled with a one and out in the playoffs this season. I'll be thrilled if they win 85 games and miss the second WC spot by a game.
  15. Well, the situations are pretty different. The Twins probably won't get a high upside risk like Meyer for Plouffe. I think they'll be targeting something more in the league average range with a high floor, which is fine with me. I'm not in a hurry to trade Plouffe by any means but turning him into a decent catcher makes a lot of sense if it can be done.
  16. I think so as well, though you may need to throw in a B or C prospect depending on the catcher's age and market scarcity. Plouffe is lining up to be an 8 WAR player over the past two seasons and he has two more seasons of team control. That's a really valuable asset to a team that believes it's a contender in the short-term.
  17. Testing article comments. Nothing to see here.
  18. If Plouffe is going to be traded, it's probably going to be in the offseason. 1. Long-term assets are easier to trade during the offseason. Instead of picking from 1-2 teams that might have a need and are a contender, you have a pool of 5-6 teams who believe they can be contenders going into the season and they're more likely to have the assets you want and need to make the trade happen. At that point, it's easier to generate a seller's market and leverage offers against one another. 2. It'd be a huge gamble to dish off Plouffe during the season when the Twins are in contention. It could easily turn into a 2014 Athletics type of fiasco.
  19. I'd give up a lot for Lucroy if he was healthy and hitting, just not Berrios.
  20. Yep. I probably wouldn't do it even if Lucroy was posting a 110 OPS+. With the scuffles of Meyer, Berrios becomes a critical piece.
  21. Greatly enhance their playoff chances? No, I don't think that's the right move in 2015. But moving Pelfrey for a bullpen piece or trading a #15-20 prospect for an adequate backup catcher might provide 1-2 more wins and keep the Twins in contention. Given how stacked the Twins farm system is right now, that's not a huge loss and the experience Buxton, Gibson, Sano, Rosario, May, et al will gain by participating in a stretch run (and possible playoff berth) is worth that meager cost. Make a small move and try to stay in contention but don't give up valuable assets that hurt the team's chances in 2016 and beyond.
  22. My first goal would be a backup catcher that could spell Suzuki more than once a week. Bullpen help would be nice but I think that can solved internally. And a lot rides on how Santana looks over his next 2-3 starts. If Pelfrey is expendable in late July, consider moving him.
  23. I look at that list and see a hell of a lot of talent. Some of it should have started getting tryouts in Minnesota a few months ago. We can't expect Oliveros to step into the seventh inning role right off the bat so getting him up here in May or early June should have been a priority... Instead, we saw the Twins put him into the Rochester rotation for a few games and then he got suspended for beaning someone. Sigh.
  24. Defnitely. Going this direction is a roll of the dice, that's for sure.
  25. Well, I don't like the idea of building what is, in my opinion, a backwards pitching staff. I firmly believe that generally, the smartest route is to keep your best pitchers in the rotation... But the Twins have put themselves in quite a position with their current pen and this might be the only way to change that internally. If I ran the team, I would have aggressively replaced relievers earlier in the season but that didn't happen so here we are today.
