  1. I'm not saying they should be traded but if this is the course the franchise is taking, they should have been publicly available. I understand that trades don't happen overnight but there is plenty of talent to shop on this roster if the team is planning a full rebuild. And if they're not planning a full rebuild, they should have spent some money. That's my issue with this offseason. They're straddling the fence instead of committing to one course of action.
  2. The thing is that they're not even rebuilding, really. Why is Caroll still on this team? Why wasn't Willingham shopped aggressively? What about Perkins? If you're going to blow it up, then blow it up properly. Don't ride the fence and expect fans to be okay with the decision. I'm fine with going one way or the other. I'm not okay with half-assing both sides and then asking for my money in ticket sales.
  3. It'll all boil down to dollars and years.
  4. I'm most disappointed that the Twins failed to sign Zach Parise.
  5. The Twins could have moved him to Venezuela as a 14 year old, put him in blackface, taught him a few words in Spanish, and then signed him as an international free agent. Another classic example of this franchise's inability to think outside the box.
  6. You're talking about the Bryce Harper that made the cover of ESPN at age 17, left high school early so he could play with a wooden bat, and went as the #1 overall pick for a record amount of money? You mean that Bryce Harper?
  7. Lots of upside and very little risk on that list. *mopes off, irritated that he's a Twins fan*
  8. You mean PAs. We don't want to confuse the situation by subtracting walks, sacrifices, and HBP from a player's effectiveness.
  9. They don't have to be random. These two guys are sitting immediately next to one another when you align the 2012 season by IP: Pitcher A: 191.2 IP, 5.07 ERA, 47/147 BB/SO Pitcher B: 191.1 IP, 3.90 ERA, 89/221 BB/SO What does IP tell you there? And what is the defining stat that makes you like pitcher B compared to pitcher A? It's ERA. If you're going to glom onto one pitching stat (not including advanced metrics), ERA is the obvious choice. Innings Pitches tells you nothing about quality of pitcher unless you get to the far end of the spectrum (if a guy throws 230+ IP, you know he was at least an effective pitcher, if not a great one). Hanging on to this notion that IP is the most important pitching stat is ridiculous. Just give it up. Besides, declaring one statistic the best is a silly notion in the first place. Why would anyone in their right mind choose one statistic when you have hundreds available to you?
  10. This. Over the past decade, it's hard to label the Twins hitters as the problem for the team's lack of success in the regular season and postseason. They've been churning out decent hitters for quite some time and the offense seemed to improve quite a bit once they kicked Swing Like A Man out of the "hitting coach" role, changed his named to Windmill, and inserted him as "third base coach".
  11. Except that you can't really do that with the Twins because chances are, your other catcher (Joe Mauer) is the DH. If your second catcher goes down, you lose the DH. Now, that doesn't matter to someone like me. I think the Twins should carry two catchers because losing the DH doesn't matter for two innings in a game where your catcher gets injured. The Twins obviously feel differently about it. So if you're willing to pinch-hit for your backup catcher on a two catcher roster, it's no different than inserting two catchers into the lineup at the same time, which renders Butera off both rosters. So, in the thinking of the Twins, you either refuse to pinch-hit for your backup catcher on a two catcher roster or you carry a third catcher for that inevitable emergency that never seems to actually happen. See above. With or without Doumit, the Twins would probably carry a third catcher because Mauer plays nearly every day and whether Doumit is a good defensive catcher is irrelevant. See 2008 and 2009 when Joe Mauer was playing 120+ games at catcher. You either leave Mauer on the bench (a huge offensive loss) or you refuse to pinch-hit for Mike Redmond and his woeful bat, period. The rest of the bench played virtually no role in that decision. It was all about Mauer and not losing that precious DH spot for an inning or two if an injury occurred. This has everything to do with the Twins' ideas on how to build a roster around Joe Mauer, not Ryan Doumit.
  12. If the team had pitching prospects, the Twins would be looking pretty damned good this season.
  13. In an abstract sense, yes. After all, all pitching stats are only relevant when compared to IP. As a stat on its own, no way.
  14. I've been meaning to watch it for awhile but haven't sat down and done it yet for that very reason. I had a sneaking suspicion that it was the kind of show that sucked you in.
  15. Actually, Chrome is pretty invasive. With that said, I don't care about invasiveness much. It's really overblown. So what if Google targets ads to you more accurately? Hell, that's a good thing, IMO. Both browsers are good. I use Chrome because it's a little faster, uses a bit less memory, and its UI is preferable to FF (though FF basically uses the same UI with its newer versions).
  16. Probably should have broken that up into more choices. Given the current roster, I think the 70-79 win option is the obvious choice (though they'll probably be on the low side of that). It will require another complete implosion of the rotation (or a complete failure for the team to stay healthy... again) to not surpass last year's 66 win total, despite what some of the whiners -- I mean -- those of the "negative persuasion" on this forum seem to believe so staunchly.
  17. You can say a lot of things about Obama being a "socialist" and all that nonsense but when it comes to foreign policy, he may as well be a Republican. The guy loves to see **** blow up. Surprising. I wouldn't have predicted this kind of approach to foreign policy and war after the 2008 election but after four years, you just kinda have to resign yourself to "this is who he is".
  18. Wow. That's a lot of years, even for a guy Felix's age. Lots of innings on that arm already (but as you said, he's been a real workhorse... He could be a rubber-armed guy like Sabathia and innings don't matter).
  19. .400+ OBP guys who consistently post a WAR of 5 or higher are not complementary pieces. Mauer is going into his age 30 season with a career WAR of 40. Do you realize exactly how rare that is for a player and how special that makes Mauer? I will never understand Twins fans' inability to appreciate Mauer for what he is and how rare a player he has become.
  20. True, but inexplicably, they'd still vote GOP. It's kinda what they do.
  21. I hadn't noticed.
  22. Which is why I said "when Kubel was higher up in the system". Nearly everyone on that list worth mentioning (minus Garza and Liriano) was promoted well before Kubel hit the bigs. Span wasn't a top prospect until... Well, ever, really. He proved his worth in the bigs and became a good player there. Bartlett was... Well, Bartlett. A decent player but not the type of prospect who couldn't be ignored (as evidenced by the team's quite extensive attempts to ignore him).
  23. Because there's no good reason to waste a year of control of a plus prospect. It doesn't matter if there are more prospects waiting.
