  1. I don't like the fact that Butera is on the roster but fixing that problem was waaaaaaay down on my list of things to care about going into 2013. The problem is that numbers 1-17 weren't addressed in a meaningful way, either.
  2. If Morneau is playing well, there's no pickle at all. At worst, you offer compensation (which he'd be worth) and take the pick if he goes elsewhere.
  3. If he's healthy, Morneau could OPS anywhere between 800 and 950. I have no idea what to expect from him other than "he should be better than last year and he wasn't bad last year".
  4. Yeah, grabbed the wrong one and didn't notice. Still, he didn't look much different as a 19 year old with the Mariners.
  5. To be fair to Ryan, Smith traded the last two legitimate shortstops the team had on the roster (yeah, he acquired one of them but then turned around and gave him away for virtually nothing). Still, I think this comes down to how this organization is run and what they look for in middle infielders. There's a reason why they continually fail to produce middle infielders who can play above a replacement level. I don't know what that reason is but after 15 years of scuffling at two key positions on the field, it's obvious that they're doing something wrong. What's most damning is that they refuse to acknowledge this shortcoming and compound the issue by bringing in the likes of Juan Castro, Adam Everett, and Pedro Florimon and expect something good to happen.
  6. Frank Thomas was the best right-handed hitter I've seen in my lifetime so yeah, I think we should all be happy with any kind of Frank Thomas comp to Sano.
  7. That's A-Rod as a rookie. I don't think it takes much "projecting" to look to the left and see the picture of Sano and realize that he's going to be a very big dude. The guy isn't even 20 yet and has crested 200 lbs. That doesn't mean he can't play third base but it does mean it's a bit of a longshot.
  8. Between Marcum and Saunders, I have no idea what to think anymore. The thought that the Twins may have missed a chance to have both Marcum and Saunders for the price of Corriea and Pelfrey just makes me want to drink away this season.
  9. You're playing pretty fast and loose with the term "shortstop". Carroll has played the majority of his games at short once in his career. There isn't a scout on planet earth who projected Sano to stay at short. Michael has been called a second bagger by almost everyone who has watched him play. Likewise, Plouffe couldn't hack it and most scouts were unsurprised by it. Everett is the type of shortstop that makes fans cringe and the front office's collective loins moisten. Unsurprisingly, he tanked. Juan Castro was so bad that we still laugh at his play over half a decade later. In the "I don't suck" department, what's that leave? Hardy and Polanco? Great. So we have a guy in rookie ball and a guy the team traded away for pocket lint and a cardboard cutout of Rick Vaughn.
  10. There is always a reason to try to extend a good player's cost-controlled years. Or do you not think Tampa would really like one more cost-controlled year of Shields right now (not saying Tampa did anything wrong with Shields, just saying that he got a relatively late start as a 24 year old)?
  11. I can't stop laughing.
  12. It's fine, don't worry about it... Just don't bypass the word censors again. It's a pet peeve of mine.
  13. Alex Rodriguez, Cal Ripken, Derek Jeter, Nomar Garciaparra, Hanley Ramirez, Elvis Andrus, Jose Reyes, Troy Tulowitzki, et al disagree. This is not 1986, people. The shortstop position has changed and it's time for Ryan to acknowledge that fundamental shift in the way baseball is played in 2013. The Twins shouldn't try to roll out Greg Gagne simply because it worked in 1987.
  14. I called BS when Ryan said he'd bring in competition for Plouffe. Looks like I was right. I also consider it a good thing. This should be a sink-or-swim season for Trevor. The team needs to see what they have moving forward. Also Nick, I didn't think Plouffe was awful, especially in a season and division that had Miguel Cabrera as the Tigers third baseman. Saying Plouffe is one of the worst infielders in baseball is hyperbole and ridiculous. He has a ton of room to improve but most of the screwups I saw looked like a guy uncomfortable playing third base, something that can change with experience. He has the physical tools to play the position.
  15. I can agree with the second half of this paragraph. IMO, a team should try to win at the beginning of every season in case things shake out in surprising ways. If Joe is healthy and wants to play catcher more often, let him do it. But if the team is out of it in June, there's simply no reason to keep pushing that line of thinking. And chances are that the team will be out of it in June.
  16. There are always service time issues on a plus prospect. Gibson is no longer young but the Twins get six years from him at the minimum, 6 1/2 to 7 if they push back his clock a bit. The guy just returned to professional ball after surgery and pitched all of 28 innings in the minors in 2012. Giving him 30 innings in Rochester and then re-evaluating his status isn't going to kill the team.
  17. I consider it a service time thing. No matter what, the team isn't going to get anything close to a full season of Gibson. Considering how he hasn't spent much time in the high minors, I don't think it'd be a mistake to give him a few more innings in Rochester.
  18. Ryan has been saying this all offseason, though. He plans to have Mauer behind the plate more often where his value is highest. It makes sense to me, even in a "lost" season. If the team is out of it late in the season and Joe is banged up, I'm sure we'll see him at DH more often. I don't think it negates Doumit's signing at all. He will still catch 30+ games (probably more like 45, IMO). The rest of the time, he'll DH where he isn't a defensive liability. The guy is only paid $3.5m a year. For the kind of production he offers and the ability to play catcher, that's very reasonable. It doesn't contradict the 2012 plan because the 2012 plan was created in the wake of 2011 when Joe had his worst season as a professional. Now that he's two years removed from the injury, I don't think there's anything wrong with pushing him behind the plate again. I don't like much of what happened in this offseason but on this issue, I don't see a reason to be too upset about it. The best player on the team is healthy and wants to play his natural position more often. The team is allowing him to do that. Big deal.
  19. No, I'm saying that Ryan doesn't fill out the daily roster. Gardenhire will find it very easy to pencil Joe in at DH with the occasional game at first. He'll play more behind the plate but at the end of the season, I doubt he'll catch 125 games.
  20. It's not short-sighted thinking, it's prioritizing things differently. Mauer has the most value at catcher. His HoF chances are better at catcher (not a huge deal but still counts for something). He's healthy for the first time in a few years and probably wants to get back behind the plate. Will he catch 125 games? I doubt that. With Doumit on the roster, it will be all too easy to DH Joe every 3-4 games or every time we see a night-day followup game. I think we'll see more in the 100-120 range if Joe stays healthy all season. And IMO, that's a fine number. Given Doumit's struggles behind the dish and Butera's general ineptitude with the bat, Joe offers far and away the best option behind the plate.
  21. The more absurd the elections become, the more the Twins HoF becomes a joke. At least the retired numbers still have some meaning.
  22. I don't really have a problem with this. If Joe is healthy and wants to catch, you let Joe catch. He's far and away the best option behind the dish on the roster (and possibly MLB). If he starts struggling with minor injuries, start to DH the guy.
  23. COME ON. This thread title is a direct violation of board rules. The title. You didn't even bother to bury it in a post paragraph. 2. Inappropriate language, including swearing and related censor bypass attempts, lewdness, and crude terms for body parts, bodily functions, and physical acts. Overall, we don’t want any language that a parent would not want their kid to see.
