  1. Yeah... Asking a team to build a rotation from the Rule 5 by pointing out that all of baseball has almost drafted a decent rotation over a five year period in the Rule 5 is a bit... Disingenuous at best. Two years ago, the Twins picked up Diamond and he has become a productive starter for the team. You can't ask for much more than that, as it's more than the vast majority of baseball has gotten from the Rule 5 draft in the past several years. You can fault the Twins for a lot of things but the Rule 5 ain't one of 'em. They've done a decent job of gaming that market over the past 15 years.
  2. He picked up better contribution at more important positions for FAR less money. What more did you want out of the guy (regarding the lineup)? He bombed at acquiring pitching but it's damn hard to fault him for his lineup acquisitions.
  3. Don't confuse my statement above with an approval of this offseason. I'm very disappointed that Ryan has failed to sign a legitimate arm for the rotation. Still, that's better than trading off nearly every player making over $1m and not getting much in return. What Ryan got for Span and Revere is better than what the Marlins got for 1/4th their roster.
  4. Miami launched a new stadium last season and was 18th in attendance. The Twins were awful from day one and still managed to be 12th in attendance in the third season of their new park. Miami may win occasionally but I have the feeling if you ask around southern Florida what they think of their ownership, the vast majority of Marlins fans would gladly switch places with Twins fans. Our ownership may be cheap but at least they're consistent and don't kick the feet out from under their fanbase every 3-5 years.
  5. Not really. The Twins had a pile of cash come off the books this offseason. They have another pile of cash coming off the books next offseason. Almost nobody is due for a large enough raise to matter. Under no circumstances can you make the argument that $13m to Marcum for a couple of years is going to constrain payroll. How on earth is that diminishing returns? Diminishing returns is replacing a 3 WAR player with a 4 WAR player in a quest to reach 95 wins. Diminishing returns shouldn't be in the argument when you're talking about replacing a -1 WAR player with a 3 WAR player in an attempt to not be completely, unequivocally ****ing awful when your main revenue stream as a business is the pursuit of paying fans. Then they'd be wrong. Marcum is miles better than Correia. They're not even in the same league. You could ask 29 GMs and every one of them would say the same thing.
  6. This. What happens if Harden rebounds, Pelfrey pitches 200 good innings, Parmelee puts up a good season, Morneau posts an .850 OPS, Hicks vies for RoY, and the Twins win 85 games, falling three games short of the playoffs? How much do you regret not picking up Shaun Marcum at that point? You don't know what is going to happen in a baseball season. If you have the money to spend and zero payroll constraints over the next three years, why would you balk on signing a decent pitcher to a three year contract? Worst case scenario, you sign a guy that bridges the gap to the next wave of young Twins players. It won't kill the team financially, there was a plethora of decent arms available, and the market is only going to go up in coming seasons. Little downside, marginal upside, you don't piss off the fanbase. Sounds like a pretty easy decision to me.
  7. Get a bunch of players with high WAR and your team will win. Add a player with a high WAR and your chances of winning a few more games will go up. Add a pitcher that had more wins in the previous season and there is virtually no correlation to additional wins in following seasons. Wins is a useless stat. At least WAR has a strong correlation to actual on-field performance.
  8. The point is that right now, the Twins don't look much different #2 to #6 or #7. Most teams are front-loaded with pitchers that aren't awful. The Twins have Diamond (likely due to regression), Worley (quite large question mark with the minor injury and switch to AL), and then... five or six guys who could pitch anywhere between a 4.00 and a 6.00 ERA.
  9. Not a bad idea. I don't know if it's needed out of Opening Day (with all the off days that usually come with April) but it should definitely be explored as an option, especially if/when Gibson is ready for the rotation.
  10. What has ever given an indication that the Twins carry over payroll savings from previous years into the following seasons?
  11. Why shouldn't the Twins pick up a decent pitcher on the free agent market? I don't get the reasoning... It's not as if they're going to save that money for 2014 and beyond (at which point their payroll is going to be stupid-low anyway). Why not sign a guy for 2-3 years? What is the real harm in doing that? I haven't seen anybody here advocating the front office to trade away prospects for a Shields-type pitcher but with an excess of money, why shouldn't Ryan spend a little to make the team look slightly less awful for 2013?
  12. The thing is that most of us had pretty reasonable expectations. We didn't expect Greinke. We didn't yell about signing Sanchez. We were split on Jackson. Most of us just wanted a Dempster or a Marcum. That would have been enough to take this pitching staff from awful to mediocre. That's all we wanted. And thus far, we haven't even gotten that much. Pretty pathetic, actually.
  13. Oh, I wasn't suggesting that you were supporting the decision, Jim... Just pointing out that the thinking behind a decision like that is rather asinine.
  14. Which is completely and utterly ridiculous. When you're dealing with a team that (should be) spending $100m on payroll a year, it's a good idea to back up that investment with a couple of $50k/year employees to give you another avenue of analysis. The combined total for two employees of that type is 1/1000th of payroll, even less when you factor in the minor league players. If it works out, hire more employees to do a better job (or pay the existing employees more). But you're not going to see real results until you give them more than bubblegum and matchsticks for tools with the mission "build me an atomic bomb".
  15. 180 innings of 4.50 ERA ball is absolutely worth $5m... Probably more like $7m, actually. And if Correia can put up those numbers (far from a given), it's a decent signing for a team that is completely pitching-starved. My main problem with the signing is the thinking that led to this decision, not the actual money.
  16. Chris Kluwe and Tim Tebow on the same team would be journalism gold.
  17. I was really meh on the Carroll signing when it happened but after last season, you can't say it was a bad signing. Carroll is playing better than the money he's getting.
  18. I think you're underestimating how much talent the Twins have had in past years, particularly 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2010. Teams don't just blindly stumble into five 90 win seasons in a decade through dumb luck.
  19. Nice way to start off the New Year, Parker. Best article I've seen in awhile because the team is so tight-lipped about their evaluation tools.
  20. Somewhere in America, a solitary tear just rolled down Mark Derosa's cheek.
  21. Heh, glad to do it. This reference is invaluable. I check it fairly often when I'm too lazy to check teh googlez for information on a specific player.
  22. Okay everybody, take a deep breath and cool down or I'm going to have to lock the thread. It's going a bit over the top.
