Twins DFA Kennys Vargas, Acquire OF Cave From Yankees

DFA used to be 10 days, now it is just 7 days. We could also waive him, which I think would have to be done within 4 days (as waivers takes 3 days). If he went unclaimed, we could outright him off the 40-man roster to the minors.

So, SOOOO disappointed it turned out to be Jake Cave instead of Nick.  Couldn't they at least have gotten one of the current or former Bad Seeds, I'm thinking maybe Toby Dammit or Kid Congo Powers for a low A prospect?

While we are rocking the beat, I noticed that the Yankees had a J. Hendrix in the lineup today!

This is an expansion of an earlier comment I had made in a different string, but it applies here as the move has now been made on Vargas. I pointed out that international players face a disadvantage with early signings, and eventual early decisions regarding the 40 man.  Early inclusion on the 40 man roster makes them eligible for early call ups; often from high A or early in AA.  Although the player is probably thrilled, I wonder about the impact of that type of development plan. As pointed out by a few, Vargas did have significant MLB at bats as well as a number at AAA.  However; averaging 200 AB's per year over 4 years is not the same as getting 500 to 600 in a year. Same issue with his AAA time.  This was a similar issue with position players Danny Santana and Jorge Polanco, as well as pitchers Randy Rosario and Felix Jorge. Early, surprise promotions to MLB that seem to interrupt minor league development.  The next will likely be Lewin Diaz. After his first year at low A the team needed to make a 40 man decision. Although left off and eligible for the rule 5 last year, the outcome will probably not be the same if he is left unprotected again after his second year at low A or a promotion to high A. Sano was more of an exception, as I expect Javier will be; an international player that is allowed to develop through a normal system progression.

Vargas is from Puerto Rico. He was signed as an undrafted 18 year old.

I know the 13 man staff causes bench problems, but overall I am still sorry to see Vargas go. Hope he ends up somewhere where he gets a good amount of AB's without being yo yo'ed up and down. No idea how successful he will be, but here was the wrong place at the wrong time.

It's not like he was trying to make the '27 Yankees.
