Under the new draft rules the Twins could actually spend an extra ~$410,000, right under 5% of their total draft allotted, with out losing any future picks. This would give them ~8,674,400 to play with. The Blue Jays used this strategy last year. They would have to pay a 75% tax on ever dollar spent past the draft allotment though.

KLaw has Appel and Gray at the top of his board and says this about Gray, "He's clearly the second-best player in the draft, but after these two guys, you could go in a lot of directions. There is no clear No. 3."

Even if another player emerges to be a "#3" for the draft, there's a lot of options and players vying for top-10 status that the Twins can pick from. I hope the Twins use this to their advantage by employing the Astros' strategy from last year to find someone they can sign below slot and put that money to use further down in the draft.

I don't know if I agree with the Astros strategy. The Twins could still go with the best player available at #4 and not have to go over the 4.5 mil. 1.2 million for the second pick is still a lot and could take bpa. The strategy the Astros used last year worked out ok. But would you rather have the young Puerto Rican SS (Correa) at 1; whom they signed for well below slot; and the high school pitcher they got second (McCullers) for above slot -- OR -- Byron Buxton for slot and J.O. Berrios for about slot. I think the Twins strategy will pay off in the long run. Sure the 'stros looked smart then, but the Twins got two pretty legit players as well. I am guessing that we will look back at that draft and think about how foolish the Astros were for passing on Buxton AND Appel (even if they draft him this year).

With no clear cut BPA, I'd question how the Twins could go BPA :) That right there is the problem with BPA.

They need help on the mound and up the middle. It doesn't look like there's much of anything there up the middle, so my hope is they take a pitcher. An under slot pick would be nice, especially if they got that AND the guy they wanted, as they could go grab one of the prep tough signs. That makes sense when the draft really has 2 elite guys and everyone else.

While after Gray and Appel there currently isn't a BPA, that doesn't mean that there isn't a second tier of draft prospects after them. BA has Manaea at 6 and Law has him at 4 but who knows where the Twins have him. Maybe the Twins have him there. I currently don't ( which last time I checked the Twins didn't care where I ranked him). Just because the Twins need pitching/MI today they may not need them in a year or two. Draft for stars, not need.

I may have shared this before, but I think it relates a ton to this conversation...

Me to Twins scout, "Keith Law called (Braden) Shipley a Top 5 pick... thought that was interesting."

His reply, "That's too high probably, our list rarely matches Keith's or Baseball America's."

When the Twins come on the clock, they will have a player ranked higher than everyone else on their board. That's the guy they will take, without a doubt. (Now, they may stack their board based on needs, for example, last year the Twins felt they "needed" power arms. Those guys were higher on their boards.)
