Tough news for Johann. Between this year's salary and the $5M buyout, the Mets are still on the hook for $30M in 2013.

 

Santana has not thrown off a mound in nearly three weeks and a stint on the disabled list to start the season is all but official.

 

 

Santana threw on flat ground from just 90 feet Saturday and will need to double the distance before he steps back on the mound.

You can make the case that the Twins should have kept Santana for his final season rather than accepting a lackluster trade package. Who knows what might have happened with that 2008 Twins team if you add him into the mix.

 

But yeah, I'm very glad they didn't do a huge long-term contract with him. Or any starting pitcher, for that matter. Just never turns out well.
