mattk Verified Member Posted August 25, 2019 Posted August 25, 2019 Read this article and was not surprised to see this disclaimer (it is, after all, the Twins, right???) :"Now, obviously, there are environmental factors in play here."What are those OBVIOUS environmental factors?
ashbury Verified Member Posted August 25, 2019 Posted August 25, 2019 For clarity: The article Matt seems to be referencing is at MLB.com:https://www.mlb.com/news/seven-things-nobody-saw-coming-this-season The first "thing" pertains to the Twins: 1. The Twins are the greatest slugging team of all time
ashbury Verified Member Posted August 25, 2019 Posted August 25, 2019 What are those OBVIOUS environmental factors?Slugging average in the major leagues in 1927 was .393Slugging average in the major leagues in 2019 is .437 So, this year's Twins having a SLG a little higher than Murderers Row doesn't look quite as strong in the context of their respective peers. The game today is so different from that of almost 100 years ago (relief pitching, DH for half the games, night games, transcontinental travel, etc) that it's very hard to compare stats from different eras anyway. The environment that players play in is just different. That, to me, is what the article's comment gets at.
Doomtints Verified Member Posted August 25, 2019 Posted August 25, 2019 Interesting on the OPS/SLG thing. Note there's a chance the Yankees will hit more home runs than the Twins this year. I can accept that if the Yankees will roll over in the playoffs.
