Pitchers and injury risk are a much bigger issue. It's kind of like the NFL handing big money to a RB... As spycake points out, this is an incentive to lock in a better deal. I could see Gibby rolling the dice if his early struggles were just food poisoning, as he'd have proven he can do it for 2+ years... someone likely signs him, but then to do that he has to reject the offer. Odorizzi on the other hand has no such evidence. He probably takes it... He'd be smart to at least... or again negotiate a deal. That offer may be a game of chicken, but said game of chicken helps them pick up highly valuable assets. This FO will play that game.
