Mariners Sign Ex-Twin Kevin Correia

So much for the argument the Twins have made for years that they "have to pay the market rate", even for #5-level, but experienced, SPs.  As in San Diego Pittsburgh, MN and LA, Correia pitched himself out of a starting job, with similar results along his entire track record.  I guess the League has finally wised up to what was seemingly pretty obvious for most of this decade.

Too bad the Twins didn't make this signing a couple of years ago. :)

Eh, no ill will toward Kevin actually - and good luck to him. He didn't command a premium price when the Twins got him and he probably represented decent value for the money in the first year at least. Signing free agents is the tax you pay for not having the right guys ready in your farm system.

I prefer the Theo Epstein method, sign more-talented, shorter-in-supply FAs with upside to short-term contracts- not as short-term stopgaps- but as the means to strengthen the team longer-term via trade or supplemental draft picks.

According to Fangraphs, the Twins got their money worth from Correia.  In 2013, he was worth $7.3 million and in 2014 based on WAR he was the Twins 5th best pitcher and his .9 WAR value would have been around $5 million.

This could be right unless you actually watched him pitch :)

You got that right.  Just a misdirected- and highly predictable- waste of time and money
