Nick Markakis Signs with Atlanta

Last night, someone asked me why the Twins would sign Hunter instead of someone like Nick Markakis. My response was because Markakis is about to get a bunch of years. Twins just need a stop gap. Good for Markakis though.

Well, his option that the Orioles declined was for $17.5 MM - I think an average of $11 Million a year is probably his fair market value. He might have been able to get a little more annually on a 2 or 3 year deal, but this is a great deal for Markakis, and probably a decent deal for Atlanta, he might still be good in 4 years.

Yeah, he's been extremely durable.  Seems like a lot of money now, but given how quickly salaries are rising $11 million in 4 years might be a bargain, even with some age-related decline.
