#MNTwins Minor League catcher Alex Real was suspended 50 games for use of a banned stimulent. He was at Elizabethton last year.

Does anyone keep track of this on other teams?  Are the Twins #s consistent?

From the mlb.com article:

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball said Real received a 50-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Methylhexaneamine, a stimulant in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension will be effective at the start of the 2015 Appalachian League season.

A descriptor of what the effects of it are:

Methylhexaneamine is a substance intended to be used as a nasal decongestant but is banned by Major League Baseball. It's believed to increase focus and energy, but side effects include nausea and stroke. The drug has been linked to some Minor Leaguers over the past few years since it's an ingredient in some pre-workout supplements.

Energy supplements likely did the job here in the off-season, but, gee, the kids need to know what gets in their bodies before they take that stuff.

For Real.

A 50 gamer after Elizabethan season starts is a lost season,  What is there 60 games all year? For a 24th round pick in rookie ball... I'll be surprised if he makes it to high A.

Never say never. Kennys Vargas (who was an undrafted free agent signee) has a similar issue, and that for diet pill stuff long prohibited in the US.

I seem to recall maybe the Twins got MLB to adjust Michael Quesada's suspension in a similar situation to begin at the start of full season low-A ball a couple years ago. Maybe, if they planned for Real to play in CR next summer, the club can try to work out something similar here.

I know Quesada served the full 50 games. Gallant and Rosario and Vargas and Hamburger and Harrington and Swarzak all did. It really seemed like Jonatan Hinojosa's was a little quicker than 50 games last year. Recall, he was called up to Cedar Rapids, played in one game and then the suspension began. He returned to Elizabethton for their opening games. I'm sure that's close to fifty as well.

I know Quesada served the full 50, but for some reason, I'm thinking we were surprised because he had been with E'town the prior year, but was able to serve his suspension based on the CR schedule. It was a departure from what happened with Vargas the prior year.

That's right. I recall that as well. It came as a surprise that he was able to do that.
