notoriousgod71 Verified Member Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 Line drive to Kinsler who throws it away trying to double the guy off second base. Salvador Perez was on third and never tagged up and ran home. Det challenged without ever appealing the play and Perez was ruled out. I hate replay. They got the call right but got it wrong at the same time since there was no appeal. Just a typical replay cluster ****. Please get rid of it.
notoriousgod71 Verified Member Posted September 20, 2014 Author Posted September 20, 2014 GOD, never mind it just took Fox 10 minutes to show that Scherzer did actually appeal.
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 Apparently tag plays aren't even reviewable either, according to KC announcers. Agree 100% Baseball executives with their fingerprints on this should feel embarrassed.
kab21 Verified Member Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 People complaining that the right call was made should be embarrassed. This was a play that completely changed the game and the entire reason that replay was implemented. They still need to work out a few issues like which plays can be reviewed.

If it was the entire reason replay was implemented then why wasn't it reviewable? The game was delayed for six or seven minutes while NY told the umpires it wasn't a reviewable play. The only reason they got it right was because the umpires watched Crown Vision at Kauffman.

The reason it was implemented was to get calls right. This individual play shows that there is still some tweaking that needs to be done. It should be a reviewable play and the umps shouldn't be looking at the big screen.
MileHighTwinsFan Verified Member Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 There are many interesting elements to the play. 1. The fact that the umpires on the field did not know whether the play was reviewable caused the situation. Once the 3rd base umpire denied the appeal at third the game should have went on and Ausmus should have been told point blank that the play was not reviewable. 2. The fact that the umpires, upon seeing the blatant mistake on the video screen, conferred with the intent to get the call right despite the rules, suggests that replay has fundamentally undermined their authority. It seems like the authority of umpires and their control of the game has been compromised by sharing their role with a 5th umpire in New York. Because it is a play of two separate-but related events that a single camera can't capture, I can understand why, as a general rule, tag plays aren't reviewable. However, shouldn't umpires have the option to consult video on their own if their goal is to make the right call? In the end, wouldn't this reestablish their authority and reinforce the overall goal of getting the call right? The fringe benefit is that we would return to the era of the unhinged rhubarb as managers try to convince umpires to look at the tape.

The rules are so murky and were put on books all at once and the umpires can't even keep track. I stand by my statement. The only good thing about replay is it gets a majority of missed calls corrected. I feel the cons far outweigh that one single benefit. It's a net negative for baseball, imo.
