All in all, he's a better GM than his current rep has him but he probably isn't getting a GM job again anytime soon.  His background, like Ryan's, was in scouting.  (Towers once said the problem with trading with Terry Ryan was that "Ryan knows your system better than you do.")

Not terribly surprising as Tony La Russa likely wanted his own guy at GM - have to believe Gibson isn't far behind. The surprising part is how long it took to make the move - the writing appeared to be on the wall for a while.

 

Towers caught some bad breaks - but he put himself in some tough spots as well. Curious free agent signings and some poorly executed trades just drained the team. It could be a rough few years in AZ as they rebuild.

Not surprising at all.  Gibson will follow, not his fault like Gardenhire very little talent on that team.  Towers will probably go back to helping or running a minor league system, more in his talent area.

Towers was/is putrid in the PR game, and in the end, that's what really cost him his job more than anything.  What's surprising is that he didn't lose the job sooner.

You can blame Towers and Gibson for that lack of talent. Gibson wanted a more 'gritty' team even if that meant trading away young talent.

I think it's worth noting that between this vacancy and the Padres' GM vacancy earlier this year, there were no rumors of candidates being from the Twins' Front Office.

 

Towers seems to be getting the Bill Smith option, too - he can stay on with the D'Backs as a senior scout if he chooses to do so.
