Article: What Colabello & Herrmann Mean to the Red Wings

I went to the Red Wings box score this weekend to check May's stat line and realized that there's not a single position player on that team that I'd want playing with the Twins. The pitching staff is looking pretty nice though. I'm almost praying for an injury just so one of the guys can get a decent chance (we all know they won't get one otherwise).

You are so correct. Even as distant backups. No one in the outfield. No one in the infield (even Florimon). They should be having Sano, Rosario right about now. Buxton should've torn up New Brit and be in the outfield. Hicks should actually be down there. Colabello is the only distant candidate as a backup. And considering the fodder at New Brit (Wembley, Boyer, Thomas to name a couple). The Twins should be pushing their catching candidates up a level, just because they can. Vargas should be up at Rochester by now.

And then you look at the pitching at both levels, an embarrassment of riches. Yes, too many 3-4-5 starters who won't pan out in the end (Valesquez, Pino, Diamond for example). But, hey, Oliveros is tearing up the bullpen. Achter is showing life.

Who currently on the 40-man roster SHOULD NOT be here next season: I spot Burton, Correia, Guerrier, Kris Johnson, Pelfrey, Swarzak, Fryer, Florimon, Colabello, Fuld, Herrmann, Nunez, Willingham, Kubel, Suzucki, Parmelee. Too many names. Hopefully some good tradebait develops (Correia, Pelfrey, Burton, Willingham, Kubel, Swarzak) from the mix. The Twins should not be afraid to trade relief...even Thielbar and Duensing, if the situation arises.

Herrmann not in CF tonight, but C instead. Meanwhile, the Red Wings have Brad Nelson, who is terrible, batting 5th. REALLY?

I mean he is terrible and doesn't even belong on the roster. But batting 5th?

corner outfield spot but putting him in cf is a joke. Take some time and watch him in the outfield and you will see he would cost runs in cf.

Kris Johnson - I don't get the hate. Left who can hit 93-94. Killing AAA. Barely got a cup of coffee with the Pirates. He's older for a prospect. So what. Stick him in the bullpen and maybe he hits 97 a la Perkins.

Nunez - seems to have done well in his limited role. No complaints.

Pelfrey - paid through next year. Hopefully he heals and is worth something.

Swarzak - only if there's something better available. Again, no complaints.

Herrmann - gotta back up Pinto with someone. He's got D. He looks better in the OF than most our OF's. I saw him correctly set up for a throw one game.

There are lots of fringe guys. It happens on a 40-man. I still think there's a few guys worth something in that mix.

Vandy, what you'll find out is that 1.) if a player isn't a star, there are those who think they're incapable of contribution, and 2.) if they are a star, they have a lot of faults still.

Johnson - you're right. He's put up numbers the last few years at the highest minor league level. In limited big league time, he's been OK, but as long as he's dominating AAA consistently, I have no problem with him being a 6th starter (spot starter when necessary). That's a nice role when most teams use up to 10 starters over the course of a season.

Nunez has certainly been fine. Pelfrey's clearly been hurt, and he's signed through next year. Swarzak has been solid in the long relief role for a couple of years no. Herrmann provides depth at several positions, and as much as people don't like it, his value on the big league roster is allowing Pinto to be in the lineup most every day. He's solid.

I think I fail to recognize this thing called "hype." If they don't have it, they're worth nothing. If they got it, sell everyone else.
