8/8 GAME NOTES: Bombs Away! Twins Swat Five Homers in 11-4 Win over Brewers

Matt Garza was in a charitable mood on Tuesday night at Target Field. His team staked him to a 1-0 lead, and he gave it back twofold. His team turned around a half-inning later by doubling the original lead to 4-2, and he again paid it back doubly by again putting his team behind the 8-ball with an 8-4 deficit.   The final damage for the right-hander was 3.1 innings, eight earned runs, four home runs allowed and an early shower as the Twins pummeled their old friend 11-4 in front of 34,186 fans.

8/8 PREGAME NOTES: Mejia vs. Garza, Closer Music and Miggy Back

It’s mostly sunny and super warm as the Minnesota Twins prepare to wrap up the first half of a home-and-home series with the Milwaukee Brewers. Youngster Adalberto Mejia (4.30 ERA, 4.85 FIP in 83.2 innings) will take the mound for the Twins, while former Twins righty Matt Garza (3.68 ERA, 4.03 FIP in 88 innings) will toe the rubber for the Brewers.   More on that in a bit.   Miguel Sano is back in the lineup after a three-game absence following being hit by a Tony Barnette pitch on Friday night

WARNE: What on Earth has Gotten into Eddie Rosario?

You may have noticed that Eddie Rosario has been hitting higher in the order of late. Part of it has been that the Twins have faced a number of lefties lately, and he’s one of the few batters on the team holding their own against them. Part it is also that Miguel Sano has been sidelined for the past few days after getting hit on the hand with a pitch against the Texas Rangers.   But perhaps a large part of it stems from the fact that Rosario is having a nice offensive season, too. For the season

Closers By Creation, Twins Making It Work

Rewind back a few years and the Minnesota Twins knew who would be getting the ball in the 9th inning. For a long time, the answer was Eddie Guardado. The man nicknamed "Every Day" passed the torch to Joe Nathan, and it was then turned over to Minnesota native Glen Perkins. In recent years though, Minnesota has needed to get more creative. As they have done so though, it seems they've consistently created closers out of thin air.   In 2015, Kevin Jepsen was Minnesota's answer to Perkins breaking

Twins Will Work Harder And Smarter

On August 5 at Target Field, Baseball Prospectus embarked on the bowels of the stadium to have an in depth discussion with General Manager Thad Levine. Speaking on the course of the season as a whole, and the plans for what lies ahead, there were a few key indications as to what changes may be coming for the Minnesota franchise. Arguably chief among them is that the Twins will win as they fine tune their process.   During the course of the conversation, Levine discussed the fact that both he and

8/5 GAME NOTES: Hamels Returns Favor in Complete Game 4-1 Win over Twins

For the second night in a row, a Minnesota Twins starter dug a hole in the first inning. For the second night in a row, a starter tossed a complete game at Target Field.   Unfortunately for the Twins, the parallels stop in between those two sentences. One night after Bartolo Colon dug an early 2-0 hole and pulled himself out of it in a complete-game win, Rangers stud lefty Cole Hamels continued his July roll into August as he scattered four hits and just one unearned run in a 4-1 win over the Tw

8/5 PREGAME NOTES: Hamels vs. Gibson, Santiago and Perkins Heading Out, Sano Still Sore

It’s overcast and warm as the Twins prepare for game three of a four-game weekend series against the Texas Rangers. It’ll be left-hander Cole Hamels (4.01 ERA, 4.64 FIP in 76.1 innings) dealing for the Rangers this evening with righty Kyle Gibson (6.08 ERA, 5.52 FIP in 94.2 innings) returning from Rochester to make the start for the Twins.   More on that in a bit.   The roster move initiated Friday night became official on Saturday, as Zack Granite was sent out to Triple-A Rochester to make room

8/4 GAME NOTES: Colon Overcomes Rocky Start to Toss Complete Game in 8-4 Win over Rangers

Like a young fighter perhaps half his age, Bartolo Colon was on the ropes and in danger just two pitches into Friday night’s game. The Minnesota Twins righty allowed a single to leadoff hitter Shin-Soo Choo and a double off the fence in right to shortstop Elvis Andrus, and the Rangers were immediately in business. One batter later, Adrian Beltre looped a single into center to bring home both runners, and the Rangers had an early 2-0 lead just 10 pitches into the game.   At this point, who knew i

8/4 PREGAME NOTES: Colon vs. Perez, O'Rourke Progressing, Injury Updates, Concert Fallout

It’s overcast and warmer than Thursday as the Minnesota Twins prepare for game two of a four-game weekend set against the Texas Rangers. It’ll be left-hander Martin Perez (5.13 ERA, 4.48 FIP in 112.1 innings) toeing the rubber for the Rangers against righty Bartolo Colon (7.70 ERA, 5.09 FIP in 78.1 innings) for the Twins.   More on that in a bit.   Manager Paul Molitor said there were no reported issues with the grass in the outfield after multiple concerts were held at Target Field while the te

WARNE: August Trades and You -- A Primer

The July 31 non-waiver trade deadline is pretty straightforward -- you’re either traded, or you aren’t. It’s after that where it gets a bit....complicated. In fact, players can technically be traded up until the end of the regular season, but they must be in an organization and on the 40-man roster on Aug. 31 to be eligible for postseason play.   In short, that’s why you might see some trades that happen between Aug. 1 and the end of the month.   The Twins have been no stranger to these types of

Twins vs Padres series recap

The Padres and Twins faced off in a two game series on Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon. The Padres won game one with the Twins splitting the series winning game two.   In Game 1, San Diego won 3-0 even though it was a very fast game until the eighth when the Padres broke it open with a 2-run home run from catcher Austin Hedges over the right field wall.   Jose Berrios was decent on Tuesday night giving up only two hits during his seven innings of work. Berrios stuck out four and only wal

A Deep Dive Into The Twins 40 Man

With the 2017 Major League Baseball trade deadline now behind us, and the end of the season not that far off in the distance, it seems a good time to take a look at the Minnesota Twins 40 man roster. While it's the 25 man collection that draws the most focus, it's the 40 man that represents where answers will come from in any given season. As the club looks to revitalize the 40 man, Derek Falvey and Thad Levine will soon be faced with some tough decisions.   Recently at Twins Daily, prospect gur

Missing Playoffs Provides A Simple Blueprint

In any given year, there's some sort of an expectation as to how things should go before it gets off the ground. Despite coming off a franchise worst 103 losses in 2016, the 2017 Minnesota Twins were representative of a better team. They weren't expected to make the playoffs, but competing on a nightly basis was a fair ask. As the season wears on, your conclusion is often presented months in advance. At some point, it's wise to adjust how you finish.   With the trade deadline in the rear view mi

Twins and Padres series preview

The San Diego Padres will host the Minnesota Twins starting on Tuesday with a night game and then ending the two game series with a day game on Wednesday.   The Padres enter the series with a record of 47-58 and the Twins are 50-53. The Padres won four in a row before before losing to Pittsburgh on Sunday while Minnesota got swept by Los Angeles and lost the series over the weekend in Oakland.   In Game One, Jose Berrios will pitch for the Twins and Jhoulys Chacin will go for the Padres. Moves Highlight Front Office Acumen

Over the offseason, the Minnesota Twins hired a new front office duo in the form of Derek Falvey and Thad Levine. They were thrust into a situation where the roster was in flux, and the manager was appointed to them. On top of all that, they were faced with making a critical decision regarding a second basemen coming off one of the best seasons in franchise history. Fast forward to today, and trades have been the highlight that define the new tandem's baseball acumen.   Prior to the 2017 season

Twins trade Garcia to Yankees for two prospects

The Minnesota Twins traded for Jaime Garcia earlier in the month. Now Minnesota have traded him to New York for Dietrich Enns and Zach Littell.   Jaime Garcia only had one start for the Twins and it was a win on Friday night in Oakland. Garcia went 6.2 innings, giving up eight hits, three earned runs, three walks, and struck out seven batters.   Since the Twins traded Garcia to the Yankees and they also acquired Sonny Gray, now the Yankees have a solid rotation with Severino, Gray, Sabathia, T

Twins Trade Kintzler to the Washington Nationals for LH Pitching Prospect, IFA $

The trade deadline came and went, and for the second season in a row, the Minnesota Twins shipped an All-Star out as closer Brandon Kintzler was traded to the Washington Nationals for left-handed pitching prospect Tyler Watson and $500k in international bonus pool money, the Twins announced.     Kintzler’s Twins tenure ends with a 2.98 ERA (3.64 FIP) in 99.2 innings across parts of two seasons. Kintzler, who turns 33 on Tuesday and will be a free agent at season’s end, had allowed 100 hits

A Change Coming In The Twins Dugout?

Now into the final third of the 2017 Major League Baseball season, the Minnesota Twins have somewhat mapped out their destiny. Selling off short term assets, they will be positioning themselves to make a playoff run in 2018. In the first year under Derek Falvey and Thad Levine, the club was in somewhat of a feeling out period. Over the offseason, the biggest change could come in who heads up the dugout.   Paul Molitor was given a one-year grace period by owner Jim Pohlad. Despite mixed results h

Twins Flip Jaime Garcia to the Yankees for Two Pitching Prospects

The Jaime Garcia era in Minnesota is over after 6.2 innings, three earned runs, one win and zero home games. The 31-year-old lefty is headed to the Bronx, as both teams announced the Minnesota Twins were shipping the veteran to the New York Yankees for left-handed pitcher Dylan Enns and right-handed pitcher Zack Littell.   Garcia’s tenure with the Twins lasted a total of six days, as he -- along with catcher Anthony Recker -- was acquired from the Atlanta Braves on July 24 for right-handed pitch

The Twins Have No Choice But to Sell

If you were to ask me whether the Twins should buy or sell during the All-Star break, I would have told you they should stand pat and maybe make a minor move or two. I would have also told you we’d know more after the tough stretch to begin the second half of the season. To start the unofficial second half of the season, Minnesota played a road series against both of the top teams in the league, Houston and the Dodgers, as well as Detroit and the Yankees. In those 12 games, Minnesota has won onl

Twins Trade Catcher Murphy to Diamondbacks for Minor-League Reliever Moya

The 40-man roster churn for the Minnesota Twins continued on Thursday, as the team shipped catcher John Ryan Murphy to the Arizona Diamondbacks for left-handed reliever Gabriel Moya. Both teams confirmed the move via press releases.   Moya will head to Double-A Chattanooga to get his Twins career underway, the team announced. Moya will be very familiar with the league, as he was a Southern League All-Star this season.   Murphy was the odd man out behind the plate as the Twins had amassed five ca

Fixing The Mound For Minnesota

We're well past the halfway point in the 2017 Major League Baseball season. With the Minnesota Twins now looking at both the Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Indians above them in the AL Central, growth is more the focus than the playoffs the rest of the way. Once again this season, pitching has been a problem for the Twins, and 2018 can be a tide turning moment.   For the past handful of years, the Twins have found themselves in a circular state of rebuild. There's been bumps in the road howeve

The Dreaded Middle Ground

As the 2017 trade deadline quick approaches, the Minnesota Twins find themselves in what amounts to a less than enviable situation. Despite losing a franchise record 103 games a year ago, the turnaround has put them near the top of the AL Central. At 49-50 on July 26, they find themselves 4.5 games back in the division race. That makes decision making that much more critical.   Thus far, the Twins have suggested they will be buyers of long term assets, yet their only move has been to acquire two
