  1. You continuing to repeat it doesn't make it anymore true. The family history suggests that they will try to at least make him earn that money. There were plenty of other big salaries the Twins could have released over the last 20 years. Rarely did they. And not for nearly the amount owed to Hughes.
  2. I'm not sure I understand the logic of extending Escobar but completely dismissing the idea of extending Dozier. Dozier is clearly the superior offensive threat. Obviously, Escobar provides defensive flexibility, but neither is substantially better than average. As for age, Dozier is only 18 months older. Dozier is proven as a starter. Escobar has shown that his production drops the more he plays.
  3. Twins still lost one of the games where Houston was not very good offensively. And Houston is likely to get Kuechel back early next month. They won 6 of 7 against the Twins without him.
  4. His salary may not matter to you, but I'm pretty sure it matters to Jim Pohlad. The bottom line is that the Twins aren't in the habit of eating that much salary. Like I said, MAYBE Falvey convinces him that it is best. But I doubt it. btw, the 40 man slot isn't a non-consideration. There are a whole slew of guys that will need to be added this offseason or exposed to rule 5. Gordon and Gonsalves for starters. Curtis, Bard, Reed and Burdi I believe as well. That's not even counting May and O'Rourke who will have to be added back after the season. Think about that for a minute. At least 7 pitchers not on the 40 man now probably will be in November. That means 7 pitchers on the 40 man now will likely need to be removed. Belisle, Breslow, Gibson, Santiago. Those are the easy ones. Boshers, Pressly, Haley, Kintzler. That's not so easy. Indeed, I'll be surprised if all those guys are gone.
  5. I wouldn't call 4 runs and 10 baserunners in 6 IP "shutting down" the Astros. Frankly, Houston had a couple bad days offensively. 2017 is not the Twins year IMO.
  6. If the Pohlads were willing to release him, odds are they would have done so by now. This is not a decision Falvine can make. It's 100% Jim Pohlad's call. Maybe they talk him into it, but I don't see it as likely. I'd put the odds at 10% before the end of 2017. 25% this offseason. Maybe by the end of 2018 up to 50%.
  7. Not only did the Yankees play two today, they played 16 innings Saturday. Their bullpen has to be pretty gassed.
  8. Mitch Garver might look good in this spot.
  9. In his next start Gimenez will pass 130 plate apperances. That would be the second highest total of his career. The highest total is 155, just last year. I have a hunch playing more would result in reduced production. Not additional. Jason Castro, btw, will likely establish his 3rd highest number of plate appearances in his career.
  10. Why? Neither one is an offensive impact. Castro is the better defender. Giminez's numbers are better because he gets a lot of playing time vs lhp, which he has always hit better.
  11. Wouldn't Ervin be directing whether the ball should be cut, as the back up?
  12. Record for heaviest starting pitcher matchup in MLB history for sure. 600 pounds plus.
  13. There's "veteran" and there is "washed up". One is useful. One is not.
  14. Actually, it could be must see TV. For individuals overcoming addiction, for example, it is said that they have to come to a realization that they have hit rock bottom before things can turn in a positive direction. That could very well be what Tuesday is for the Twins. Sending a 44 year old with an ERA north of 8 this season to face one of the best offensive teams in the league sure seems like it has the potential to be rock bottom for the Twins organization.
  15. Maybe it doesn't alter their long term strategy but it certainly will affect the Twins. A division rival is stockpiling elite controllable talent. That is certain to affect the Twins in some way over the next 6-10 years.
  16. Maybe Colon just can't get it up anymore. I've heard that can be a problem with older guys. Hey! Minds out of the gutter! We're talking release point here.
  17. If the Twins DFA Gibson, who starts in his place? Jorge? An all Latino rotation?!?!? Would that be a first in MLB?
  18. Polanco looked fine, spectacular even, for the first quarter or whatever. I have no way of pulling up defensive stats from a partial season but nearly everyone here was raving about how smooth he looked despite a few short throws, which seemed to be getting better. For what it is worth, Polanco made his 4th error on June 3rd. Meaning that in the 44 games he played before that he made 3 and in the 28 since (and including) June 3, he's made 8. Note: those numbers are actually more tilted. I just added his games played in April and May and then June and July. So, he possibly made 3 errors in 46 games and 8 in 26. Clearly, a line of demarcation to his season. I don't think he all of a sudden forgot how to catch the ball. Maybe it's his personal loss. Maybe he just can't separate defense from offense. I don't know. The Twins do employ a sports psycologist. It's not a problem the Twins can ignore. They need to do something. What exactly that is, I am really not sure.
  19. So, Michael Pineada, UCL. Too bad, so sad. Yada yada. Would it make sense to sign him to a minimum contract for 2018 and then an incentive laden contract for 2019-2020? Minimal guaranteed. $ 2 mil over 3 years guaranteed the rest he has to earn. He won't get much better anywhere else. I will say that it is likely that the Yankees will "do right" by Pineada and allow him to rehab even if he isn't under contract. They have that history. I believe they did it for Allan Anderson.
  20. Hence me saying that he is taking his struggles at the plate onto the field. Without looking it up, it was right around game 40 that his season took an ugly turn. Out of the gate he was fine. Making strong contact, collecting hits. Making all the plays. But at some point, the hitting went south and the defense followed a week or so later.
  21. It seems likely to me that his poor hitting is affecting his fielding. Veteran players can usually seperate the two. Greg Gagne, for instance. As for Polanco's future: some of you need to remember that he turned 24 last week and has basically one season worth of at bats.
  22. Could be worse. The Twins could face the Yankees in July too. Oh wait...
