  1. The ball off the bat of Tyler Austin makes THAT sound.
  2. You are entitled to your opinion.
  3. Does anyone get annoying pop ups while viewing gameday on mobile or is it just my dinosaur phone? It sometimes happens on this site as well. Usually not any others though.
  4. Think there is a chance we see Austudillo do a Cesar Tovar and play all 9 positions in a game in September? Pitching and first base would worry me the most.
  5. According to my facebook memories feed, I attended my last game at the HHH Metrodome 9 years ago today.
  6. If you are going to ignore the numbers and simply rely on your passions, there is little point continuing this debate. Hey, if this was 1993 and the Twins had a 6 or 7 man bench, I’d be fine with him hanging around as a part timer for another year or two. But the reality is that the Twins haven’t had more than a 4 man bench at all this year (other than NL rules games) and it has been 3 for probably 90% of the games so far. A team that is trying to contend simply can’t afford to roster a non-productive semi-regular first baseman who plays no other position.
  7. Kepler has 2.3 bWAR. Mauer has .9. So does Cave in less than half the at bats. Even Austin has amassed .4 in his handful of at bats. The numbers don’t lie. Mauer isn’t a productive hitter. Other than one year, he hasn’t been for 5 years. It’s time.
  8. Sitting at 11 2/3 going into tonight. Gonsalves going 2 SEEMS like a gimme, but he didn’t last time.
  9. The Rockies only open at home about one year out of five.
  10. The Twins need to acquire at least one starting infielder. If they “fall back” to Adrianza starting, we see the 2019 version of Taylor Motter when someone inevitibly gets hurt.
  11. Austin is better. Kepler is better. Cave is better. On the presumption that Buxton is going to get every opportunity to play CF next year, 1b is covered with Kepler and Austin while Cave plays RF. Joe Mauer isn’t one of the top 3 options to play first base IMO. And that’s why it is time for him to go.
  12. Kepler has 2.7 bWAR. Even Austin has .4 in just a few weeks. Sano is in negative territory, but that’s largely defense. btw, Mauer has a negative defensive bWAR for those that think his pressence helps the defense. The metrics disagree.
  13. I don’t know about tired legs per se, but I don’t think a limit to his innings caught is out of line. They certainly wouldn’t want to have him catch twice as much as last year, for example. What that limit might be I have no idea. Maybe 50% more than whatever he had last year.
  14. I think you answered your own question. Perhaps they are concerned about his workload. It’s not the same as a pitcher, but if one isn’t used to catching as many games as Garver will, it can be hard on the body.
  15. And maybe that is why the Twins record is what it is. Right now, Mauer has a .9 bWAR. Logan Forsythe has a 1.0. It’s time.
  16. And don’t even get me started about the week in which Zach Duke had FOUR twenty plus pitch appearances. That is just plain dumb.
  17. I don’t know what the exact date was, but it was well after May 24. It might have been late June, early July when Reed, Hildenberger and Pressly were all in the top 15 in the AL for appearances and relief IP (with Pressly at 1 or 2). Again, this is when the Twins had played 3 fewer games than every other team in the league. Edit - Here you go: On July 5, shortly before Reed went on the DL, he appeared in his 40th game in team game 84. On July 6, Pressly appeared in his 44th game in team game 86. In that same game, Hildenberger made appearance # 40. THREE relievers with over 40 games by team game 86. That is why they have struggled at times. They’ve been worked into the ground.
  18. 1) Isn’t that the point? No one knows how well or how poorly he would have pitched because he almost never did. Even in blowouts he was rarely used in the beginning. 2) At the end of the day, it’s his decision. He’s the one taking the ball from pitcher A and giving it to pitcher B. If he isn’t prepared to own his decisions, he needs the responsibility of making them removed.
  19. Like I said, been awhile since I checked but once upon a time Pressly, Hildenberger and Reed were all top 15 in the AL for appearances and relief IP. Again, keeping in mind the Twins lagged behind in team games played by 3-4 until July. 3 guys in the top 15 is pretty clear evidence of overuse. No other team had more than two.
  20. Not even close to accurate. Check out Matt Magill’s pitching log and ask yourself if Molitor was using him. There are plenty of examples of guys going days or a week without pitching while guys like Hildenberger, Reed and Pressly were being used 3-4 times a week. Are those pitchers inferior? Perhaps. But you still can’t overuse guys like Molitor has and expect them to hold up. I stopped tracking Pressly’s usage in early July, but at the time he ranked #1 or 2 in appearances despite the team still having played 3-4 fewer games than any other team.
  21. Not sure how wise it is to plan on Mauer as the lead off hitter for 2019, even if he does come back. He is not an everyday player and that is a reality likely to worsen next year. He’s going to start fewer than 120 games this year. That’s more than 1/4 of the season. If you put Mauer there, you need a capable replacement the rest of the year.
  22. I think 6:40 also is attempting to get games in before it is below 40 degrees in April.
  23. Because that worked out so well this year.
  24. Stewart, Odorizzi and Gonsalves next 3 games? Over/under for total IP between the 3. 13.5 is the number. Go.
  25. When I am asked how a manager impacts the game, I like to say that a GOOD manager puts his players in position to succeed. He doesn’t, for example, continually use Taylor Rogers against RHB in winnable games. He also doesn’t do this: http://www.espn.com/mlb/game?gameId=380714109
