Feeling Out The Twins Tradeable Assets
killertwinfan commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
For this team to progress, they need more pitching. It's going to hurt, but we need to give up good prospects for a quality starter. -
Crushing it??? Not sure where "Crushing it" falls on your scale of one to ten? Certainly there is a lot of reason to have hope. The success of 2017 was mostly of a fortunate cause. I don't think you can count on a repeat from Santana. And, any fall back from the pitching staff and we go the other way in a hurry. Then your article title with change to "getting crushed".

This is a young team. You should Berrios out there. He needs his opportunities to prove he can step up in tough situations. It is part of the learning process.

Article: Phil Hughes Changing Up To Stay Ahead
killertwinfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Amen brother. Give me the stats on how long he can hang on? He has been hit very hard (speaking of his outs) and we/he has been lucky for the most part. I hope our starting pitching prospects aren't so bad that what he is doing right now is our best option. -
Four things I am watching this week
killertwinfan commented on Hosken Bombo Disco's blog entry in Hosken's Blog
Unfortunately our handling of Buxton has been the premier chapter from the book, "What No To Do". I like what your are saying and for the most part it appears the Twins are following that advice. All of but one of Buxton's PA's were good in the opener with Texas and all looked really good last night. I really liked his last AB even though it resulted in an out. He took a pitch on the outside part of the plate and hit hard the other way. Very Nice! Of course, the pitching last night for Texas left much to be desired, but progress nonetheless. -
Article: Polanco Providing Poise
killertwinfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was convinced that Polanco couldn't play short given last years effort and the off season activity by the Twins. Although he has his shortcomings, he looks very good. If this was in the cards, I don't know why you would even consider trading Dozier. Getting what we wanted was a pipe dream and very disruptive to the player being traded. I really like the grit of Polanco.- 28 replies

Where Does Buxton Go From Here?
killertwinfan commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
I don't know if it is a good idea to send him down, since any options we have really impact the outfield D negatively. But, It may be a quicker fix if he works things out in triple A. I really hope there are no technical issues with his swing and that things are all in his head. He just needs to slow down, try to recognize the pitches and hit them where they are thrown. STOP SWINGING AT tough breaking balls early in the count. It seems that everyone is at a loss with Buxton. I feel bad for what he is going through and extremely frustrated with our handling of him. -
2/3rds of our outfield is batting .150, one of our bench OF is around the same. Defenses are squeezing one of our better hitters into sub .250. Very poor clutch hitting, in general we are too aggressive at the plate in those situations. I guess all of those things are correctable. But prolly not tonight and prolly not in this series. Dorthy needs to find another way.

I believe the root cause of this issues with this team is the way Falvey and Molitor came together on this roster. Falvey got some of his guys in there and Molitor as well. But Molly was open about not liking 13 pitchers, so my guess the roster is tilted in Falvey's favor. I DO NOT LIKE THIS! They should have come together on a strategy and built the 25 and 40 man rosters from there. Instead we get a hodge-podge pitching staff, an infield with an offensive tilt, and outfield with a defensive tilt, a light bench and bunch of weird decisions looming. Nice job boys! If you know what you are doing you sure aren't showing it.

Less Body, More Dip. Hughes In Trouble?
killertwinfan commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
HMMMM. This article frustrates me and it shouldn't. Maybe I just want to kill the messenger, but I won't do that. To me this is very obvious and it was in spring training too. Just because he is paid $14M, they are playing him. I hate that notion, and I am alarmed that our alleged baseball people can't see this or have chosen to roll the dice on him, when we have better options. 13 pitchers when you came out of spring training with some obvious issues in the field? FOOLISH, especially when one of your bench is Grossman who struggles in the field. I would feel better about things if our leadership were crafting a message for the future they are building. Not hanging on to threads of hope. Hughes, Breslow and Tonkin are the low men on the pitching totem pole. Two of them should not be here right now. The 40 man roster is there for a reason. You can bring a pitcher if you need one. They don't have to be on the active roster. Come on guys, show us you know what you doing!!!! -
What concerns me the most about the Twins is the leadership. I would be more comfortable with them if their actions aligned with performance on the field. I will give them a pass on Buxton because he is in a slump. Everybody has one of those. However here are three things that concern me... 1. It appears that Polanco, although not ideal, can play short next to Dozier. The only offer we got for Dozier was very poor and although I thought we had to move him, I agreed with the decision not to. Why did we not know either of these things? 2. Hughes has been hit hard, for two years now, including this spring. If they play the infield in again somebody is going to get killed. He has not proven he can pitch, yet he gets a starting spot. Somebody paid this guy too much now somebody is trying to play him before he is ready, and he may never be. We have a glut of pitchers, he is not part of the future. Make him prove he can pitch before you give him the ball. 3. Mauer is not improving, he is regressing. He is a one trick pony and the opposition has recognized that fact. Molitor talked about protecting Joe against lefties this spring yet come opener we did not bring up a position player to accomplish that feet. One bad decision on the pitching staff, leads to another with a field position. I know this is a new and promising leadership group. At this point, albeit in a tough situation, I really don't see improved decision making translating into improved performance on the field.

Article: Paul Molitor's Opening Day Redemption
killertwinfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I didn't think much of the batting order but I did appreciate the gift the Royals' pitching staff graced us with. I wonder how many times teams have walked in 3 runs in one inning. What is Molitor going to do? Bring in Escobar, Santana or Gimenez on Opening Day? Early in spring training they talked about protecting Mauer against tough lefties. So opening day they throw him in clean up, because they have no options That should have been Park in the 4 slot, but he is not available right now. I suspect we have very little flexibility and you won't see much of Santana or Gimenez until somebody needs a day off. Escobar may get more chances to give Sano a day off in the field and move him to DH. I can't wait until they figure out the rotation. I expect to see Duffy starting by May. -
Obviously we have the flexibility to accommodate our current situation injuries and development. I really would like to understand the end game. It seems we are postponing decisions for something?? Hughes health and ability? The emergence of Berrios, Chargois, Wimmers, Tepesch, Park or Vargas?? I think that if you had a strategy for this team these decision would be clearer. I don't see how Santana fits into the future in any scenario. Probably the same could be said for others.

Article: Phil Hughes as 2017's CC Sabathia
killertwinfan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well, I guess I can buy that perspective... but how long of a leash do you give him? 5 outings, 10? No doubt the downside risk here is why we are carrying 13 pitchers. I really don't like the notion that because you are paying him a lot, you have to play him. If he is not ready, get him ready first. Then play him. I don't think anyone has high hopes for this optimism to turn into reality. Can this guy even create some value in a relief role? -
Article: Surprises Mark Twins Opening Day Roster
killertwinfan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I really don't know what his value is. Essentially he is a body that can play (poorly) an number of positions. So in case some body get's hurt we are covered for one, maybe two games. After that you have a 40 man roster to fill those gaps. Extremely low value in my opinion. That should be Park's spot. On the 13 pitchers, Santiago is probably behind schedule and Hughes is a question mark. The bullpen could see extensive use in 40% of their outings. I am uncomfortable with a short bench, but I understand it.- 388 replies

I would really like the Twins to establish a culture that includes a "meritocracy". Although I agree that Sano is going to be one of your better players is lack of commitment and effort needs to be confronted directly. As a result of the awful spring training result, he should start the season batting 7,8 or 9. He is letting the team down. The editorial shots that come from the front office are weak and inappropriate. WHEN, Sano hits better then move him up. Park should bat 4 until Sano beats him out.

The Twins might not suck
killertwinfan commented on GoGonzoJournal's blog entry in Minnesota Foul Play-by-play
Meeting the projection for this team is probably a big challenge. I guess we would have to take it but I am not sure that makes us competitive, even in a weak Central Division. Two years ago we over-achieved. Last year we under-achieved. I guess it would be nice to know if we are on the right path with the new management more than anything else. That won't be clear until the middle (or end) of next season. -
Article: Twins Roster Projection 2017: Version 2.0
killertwinfan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The mindset behind the pitching staff seems to be tied a little too much to the decision making from the past. I want to believe that this organization is future minded and we will see more younger players crack the rotation. Obviously if guys like Hughes, Breslow, Tonkin and Perkins can pitch well, great. If they struggle, move on. We need to find out about pitchers like Berrios, Haley, Mejia and Duffy.- 63 replies

Article: Five Position Player Headlines
killertwinfan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like what you are saying here. To me the core of our success was based on good fundamentals. I understand the game has changed, but I prefer to watch a good fielding team. Also, there is a good chance our pitching staff will pitch a shade better knowing they have a good defense behind them. It would also help to know they are going to get a bunch of runs behind them, but I don't think that can happen this year. -

Article: Additions By Subtractions?
killertwinfan replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Good article and there is nothing wrong with Falvey's approach to the team as long as you are not a season ticket holder. With the exception of one outlier year, the Twins have not been relevant since 2010. With the low benchmark of 59 wins, it should be easy for him to show season on season improvement. If the ownership gives him 3-4 years to rebuild, why not take it. Lower risk for him and his new team. Unfortunately for the fan base the franchise will have been on a 10 year hiatus by the time we are a factor again. OUCH!- 38 replies

Yeah, I should be more up-beat, Thanks for the nudge. I was hoping for more in the off season and was letting off a little steam. My point had nothing to do with Suzuki or Plouffe but the fact that we did so little in the off-season that we didn't even replace the 100 RBI that they produced. Also, our prospects were on the verge of bust status, according to the vibe I read following them. Were it not for a strong finish by Buxton and some and an improved off-season workout program by Sano, the dialogue would be different. If Sano's glove is not better he will be a DH soon.

I appreciate the call for an optimistic chord, but the reality is that with the start of the spring training being a couple of weeks away, the stark reality is that the new management has not had a successful off-season. There are very few high points on which to have hope. Almost a hundred RBI between Plouffe and Suzuki probably won't be fully replaced. Reduced run production and below average pitching is not the recipe on which I was hoping to start the season. I am sure the new management is better than the old management but at this point nobody can tell if it is even a reasonable improvement. At least the timberwolves have potential stars. I can't wait until this fall! Go Vikes!
