  1. I think if you gave umps 4 seconds to think about a pitch, they'd get more ball/strike calls correct. They give an immediate call that allows everyone to react. This comes into play on steals, dropped 3rd strikes, etc. If they get that 4 seconds down to less than a second, I'm on board. (I haven't read all the articles....I'm assuming the current system provides a ball/strike call in less than a second?)
  2. If you take a look at that 2013 draft, there really wasn't a lot of talent available. Kind of takes the sting out of Stewart not turning out. There weren't many guys in the 1st round that look like MLB regulars, and 2 of them were drafted before Kohl so the Twins didn't even have a shot at them. Only 4 players drafted 4-31 overall have more than 2 bWAR.
  3. LOL We all know players that you love to have on your team, but hate to face. Why don't you ask some managers and GM's how much they'd love to have Yadi. If any of them say they don't want him, then you know which ones are incompetent.
  4. I don't know, I bet Nelson Cruz likes Yadi. https://www.mlb.com/cut4/nelson-cruz-gets-his-photo-taken-with-joe-west-by-yadier-molina----in-the-all-star-game/c-241792582 But you go ahead and bash him all you want.
  5. I hope you waited to the last minute to get them to throw in some free guacamole. Since it's National Avocado Day and all....
  6. Ummm, there's a column to the left of the draftees name with a Y/N for whether they signed with the drafting team. Baseball America used to have a tracker like this that listed how much they signed for.
  7. Maybe Angel was talking about when he's umping one of the bases
  8. What I found most interesting. *Marlene sells 15mm shares @ $11.85 for gross proceeds of $177,750,000. Sale proceeds net of taxes and fees is $149,310,000.00. * Education Trust sells 19mm shares @ $11.85 for gross proceeds of $ $225,244,800. Sale proceeds net of taxes and fees is $189,205,632. * Total net proceeds from the sale are $338,515,632. AMTD currently selling around $52.00. Selling those 34 million shares today would bring around 1.768 billion, instead of the 338 million they got. So the 'opportunity cost' of owning the Cubs could turn out to be a losing proposition for the Ricketts family. I know Mike Sixel always says that no one has ever lost money owning a baseball team, because they always make a profit with they sell. That statement may be true, but this shows why owners like to make money off their teams on a yearly basis, too.
  9. Unless some team has an injury to a 1B/DH right about the same time that the Twins need to clear Austin off the MLB roster. Sometimes, it's just dumb luck.
  10. Another option for salaries would be to do something like the NBA. Take a portion of the TV money and assign it to a pool for veteran players. If a player has x years of experience, the first x million dollars come out of the pool. If you're the Twins, you could end up paying a veteran the same as you would a rookie. I think that's how it works for the NBA....but I've been wrong before.
  11. The Cardinals went through a pretty dismal stretch in the 90's, it turned out to be a great advantage. The new owner (Bill DeWitt) was able to pivot from their old school ways to utilizing analytics. LaRussa and GM Jocketty weren't totally on-board, so it wasn't real smooth, but it eventually paid off. Now that every team is using analytics, I don't know how any of them will have as big of an advantage. I guess we'll know in 5 years or so.....
  12. If 7/175 is accurate, the Twins could top that offer and front-load the first couple years. Then you don't have to worry so much about affording Sano, Buxton, etc. if/when they start producing. I think there might be rules about how much you can front-load (or am I thinking of the NFL???). But something like 30/30/30/25/25/20/20 would come to 180 million, so you could add or subtract a couple million here and there to make it work.
  13. Is there a listing of team revenues by year? (Sorry, I'm too lazy to look.) Do they have 2018 yet? I'm wondering if it reflects the $50 million per team for the Bam Tech sale. And would projections for 2019 drop by ~$50 million per......
  14. Looking at his splits....what if he is handed the starting CF job and is slashing around 200/250/310 in June? Do you keep running him out there? His 2nd half splits are significantly better. It might be best for his confidence and performance to start him out in the minor leagues. There are only about 500 plate appearances for each half for him, when do 1st half/2nd half splits gain significance?
  15. Did they kick Texas out of the league? 'Bout time......
  16. Combined with the Cron signing, my impression is the front office is taking half steps. If things work out & several of Cron, Schoop, Sano, Buxton, Kepler have their "Dr. Jekyll" version early in 2019, this could be a team in contention that makes an upgrade in July, trading some of their prospect depth. (Sort of assuming that there will be at minimum a bullpen addition or two yet this offseason.) If most of these guys have their "Mr. Hyde" version in 2019, it will be a selloff at the deadline again. I can't say I really blame them....when I look at the Twins roster I don't see a lot of 'sure things'. There are just so many guys that have question marks. But there are a lot of guys younger than 30. I think several are going to really excel next year. If I had to guess, I'd pick the older ones entering their prime years like Schoop, Kepler, etc. And I think Sano will mash. But I don't think there are enough established producers that it would make sense to go all in. Only 6 guys that reached 2 bWAR last year are on the roster right now, and none reached 4.
  17. Jedd Gyorko qualifies for that. Sort of. He's mostly 3B/2B lately, but he did have 5 games at SS & 5 at 1B last year. (Plus 1 IP). The Cardinals probably don't have room for both Gyorko & Greg Garcia. Gyorko has the better bat, but Garcia might be a better fit for them at this point.
  18. Assuming you're referring to Sickels' rankings? He has 21 Twins prospects as B- or higher (including B-/C+ and C+/B-). So far, Sickels rated 7 orgs, and all 7 have more than 10 of these prospects. MIN leads with 21, KC has 18, ATL 14, CIN 13, LA & BOS 12, SEA 11. Sadly, I don't know if we'll get the other orgs as I'm not sure where Sickels will end up. But I think the depth of the Twins prospects might be overstated a little. I don't think a few B- prospects will bring back much MLB talent. IMHO, of course.
  19. How much contact do MLB teams have with high school kids, or even college kids, to do this kind of testing? I didn't think they could have any contact other than with the kids' 'family advisor'?
  20. I saw a story somewhere that Kelly changed his philosophy for the playoffs, stopped throwing his slider, or threw more sliders or something. Anyway, if you look at his playoff stats, that is the kind of guy you want in your bullpen. But is it sustainable over 60 games? With the velocity he has, I would think so. He may have unlocked a key to getting more strikeouts and that would presumably lead to better results. It makes him a little more interesting, but do you pay based on such a SSS?
  21. Thanks for the link of the minor league free agents. I wonder how many of those guys were Top 100 prospects at some point? (Not counting guys who had MLB careers like Mike Napoli, etc.) Lots of familiar names in that list.
  22. I'd go the opposite route. I don't know how many open spots there are on the 40 man, but I seem to remember discussions that there could easily be around 8 or so. I'd look at some other teams that have a 40 man bind, and relieve them of some of the guys on their bubble. (Assuming I remembered correctly about the Twins having lots of spots once Belisle, Gimenez, etc are released).
  23. Stubby Clapp? Has managed the Memphis Redbirds the past 2 years, won the PCL both years. Named Minor League Manager of the Year last year (and may be again this year when the award comes out). Prior to Memphis, he worked in the Toronto system for years, and there is some smoke he might be hired there. I'm pretty sure he's hip to the new analytics, and the Twins look to have a young roster. He's more likely to end up in Toronto, but he's a possibility if you're looking for someone outside the Twins org.
  24. Here's a look at the ballots from each of our seven voters. Opinions varied greatly on this one. There were five different choices for No. 1, and no player appeared on every list. Seth Stohs: 1) Kyle Gibson Nick Nelson: 1) Kyle Gibson John Bonnes: 1) Kyle Gibson Tom Froemming: 1) Kyle Gibson Cody Christie: 1) Kyle Gibson Steve Lien: 1) Kyle Gibson Ted Schwerzler: 1) Kyle Gibson Was the lead-in to the list for another story? :-)
  25. Another possible option is Carlos Martinez, of the Cardinals. There have been rumblings that he might be available this winter, due to a 40 man roster crunch, his inconsistency, the Cardinals many starting pitchers, and his off-field antics. Is he an ace/#1? Potentially. In 2016 he was, not so much this year or 2017. He's signed through 2021, with 2 team options after that. So if he returns to 2016 form, he's a bargain. What would it take to get him? The Cardinals really want someone that is a difference maker, they always seem to draft in the 20-30 range and it's hard to land a stud there. They also need to clear some room on their 40-man this winter. Sooooo.....Royce Lewis would probably be the perfect starting point. I have a 2nd Cardinal that's also going to be available that might make sense for the Twins, too. Jose Martinez can hit, but he's a butcher in the field. He could be a 3-4 WAR DH, and he's not a Free Agent for a while. It likely wouldn't take much to pry him away, as the Cards have that 40 man crunch I mentioned. So a player or 2 in the lower minors. If you add C-Mart & J-Mart to the Twins, is that enough to propel them to the playoffs? They'd surely want to shore up their bullpen, too. But if the Twins FO thinks they can contend next year, and they evaluate C-Mart as a good bounceback candidate, I could see them pursuing him.
