  1. This for me is the big one. Stop granting "time" to the better between each and every freaking pitch. Only grant "time" after the third and fifth pitches, for example.
  2. I know its not politic on this site to praise the front office, but what was the Twins' minor league talent ranking say four years ago? After just a few years, the Honorable Mentions List would be the envy (as a top 10) of more than a handful of Major League Teams. I especially like how the bare cupboard at catcher is now well stocked. It is true they haven't fielded a 90-game winner in Target Field, but the smart way for a mid-market team to build is from the bottom up.
  3. "In 2018, at age 29, he took a sizable step back"\ Would this be the fifth free agent who took a step back last year?
  4. On the one hand, that would be great. On the other, given the ETAs of the top prospects, I could envision the Twins choosing a High School pitcher.
  5. I agree it would be amazing. I hope that in 2021 they don't combine to hit .210
  6. You raise a very interesting point. The assumption is that the White Sox, the Royals and the Tigers will not be very good in '19. But, like the Twins they are, as you wrote, looking to build on a core. The question is whether the Twins' "wait and see" attitude in '19 with a drive for the division in '20 or even '21 will be eclipsed by those three teams as they advance their minor leaguers.
  7. I hate to be a rain cloud, but these numbers, and the glacial pace of the FA market both suggest a very difficult renegotiation of the labor contract in, what, 3 years. The good news is that there won't be a labor stoppage because the Expos are not in playoff position. (Sorry: still a raw subject )
  8. I hope this is true. Should Bux end up in arbitration, I foresee a lot of ugly. $1.2M versus $2.25M? I hope I'm wrong, but I think he thinks he deserves $10M. Whatever impact it may or may not have, the issue of the decision to push his service time in September will certainly be raised.
  9. Apologies, but "(more on that here)" was intended to direct us where?
  10. Sign 'em to a one year contract with a team option. Then trade 'em for prospects. Yup. Sign all of 'em. Swallow salary and hope two of 'em bring back prospects. I must admit, I enjoyed typing "'em." My true opinion is that, as many of you concur, use the 5th starting spot to determine the rotation in '20 and beyond. Any screeching sound associated with pulling dollars from the Pohlad's wallet should be for a quality reliever.
  11. Romero in the pen in '19 does not preclude Romero in the rotation in '20 and / or '21.
  12. Thank you Mr. Schwerzler here are the parts I agree with: "Despite how the Lance Lynn and Logan Morrison signings worked out for Falvey and Co. last offseason, there’s no denying that both moves made a ton of sense....Both players were inked to team-friendly dollars, and there’s no such thing as a bad one-year deal." and "You can certainly look at the free agent landscape as it stands today and wonder where those extra dollars would be spent" But I disagree with your assessment that: "However, we’ve heard about plenty of relievers that the Twins were in on to this point and they simply didn’t want to extend a second year." Might you provide an example? and "At this juncture, there’s a dwindling list of those types left, and the suitors remain a vast and competitive field." I should admit that I am not a fan of signing a fifth starter on the FA market, so I believe the only remaining hole is RP. It is my humble opinion that there are still a large number of bullpen upgrades still out there.
  13. "if a couple of tweaks are made, this is a guy we’re talking about for years to come." From the movie "Other People's Money" Amen. And amen. And amen.... Where I come from, you always say "Amen" after you hear a prayer. Because that's what you just heard - a prayer. … [E]ven if the prayers were answered, and a miracle occurred, and the yen did this, and the dollar did that, and the infrastructure did the other thing, we would still be dead." Replace yen, dollar and infrastructure for Kepler, Sano and Buxton and replace dead for "out of the playoffs" and you have my attitude for the 2019 Twins.
  14. So, with a 3 man bench, who would they be against RHP?
  15. I’ve been advocating him as a closer for a while. He could be what Osuna was for the Jays during their last playoff runs.
  16. Di dntDidn’t they draft, like, 45 catchers in last year’s draft?
  17. Here’s a discussion topic. Using just the players currently on the roster, what do you see the opening day line ups versus lefties / righties looking like? And yes, there are caveats galore.
  18. My two cents: The player: a grade of B The contract: A + Questions: Has he ever played 1B? What are his lefty / righty splits? I hope we see a lot of creative platooning. On a tangent, I’d rather have an excellent RP than a platooning Moustakis.
  19. He'll pitch as best he can as he'll be pitching / auditioning for 29 potential employers.
  20. I'm a degenerate gambler and will bet on just about anything with two exceptions-- greyhounds and Twins' prospects. More seriously, thank you for your honesty and openness. And I will await this year's choices for breakout candidates.
  21. I'm wondering what our reactions would be if we looked back on this thread in exactly two months. As one poster thrice reminded us, its December, not February. I think late signing FAs is becoming the "new normal." And the new FO showed us last year that they want to be value investors. But getting back to the original premise of this thread-- standing pat-- I hope that strategy does no preclude restocking the bullpen in a year of unnaturally large suupply
