Trade Deadline Tracker: Twins' News and Rumor Roundup
bighat replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Mariners are apparently in the conversation on Berrios. From MLBTradeRumors: MLB.com’s Jon Morosi tweets that the Mariners have been pursuing a Berrios acquisition this week, with the Twins focusing on one of Seattle’s top pitching prospects (Emerson Hancock or George Kirby) as part of a multi-player return. The two sides aren’t close to a deal, Morosi adds. Both Hancock (2020) and Kirby (2019) were first-round picks in recent Mariners drafts and have pitched at Class-A Advanced this year. Both players have missed time with shoulder fatigue this year, but Hancock returned this week and Kirby is expected back within the next couple of weeks, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times tweeted a couple days ago. My thoughts: Big yikes. A high single-A pitcher with shoulder fatigue is not a very good return for the Twins. -
Trade Deadline Tracker: Twins' News and Rumor Roundup

Yeah, I mean this seems to be the key. If the Twins plan to compete in 2022, I don't see how subtracting Berrios and/or Buxton will accomplish that. Even if the return is stellar, we likely wouldn't be seeing any help from that haul until 2023-24. Essentially if the Twins trade Berrios, it seems to me they're waving the white flag on 2022 and expect to compete with core of Kirilloff, Royce Lewis, and Balazovich in a few years and they're going all in with those guys. Meanwhile Josh Donaldson will spend his last 2 years of his big contract floundering for a rebuilding club. Really tough spot for the Twins. -

Game Score: Tigers 6, Twins 5
bighat replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
True, but frankly he shouldn't even have had to bat in the 10th or run in the 11th inning. The Twins had a 5-1 lead in the 9th and just needed 3 easy outs to finish off what was mostly a laugher. Sano was awful, but he's probably not the one we should be angry at. In fact, I'm done being angry with Sano - I more just feel sorry for the guy at this point. It's like watching an old boxer still trying to fight. It's ugly to see this happen in front of a crowd, on TV, and his failures only invite pity and sympathy. At least from me. -

I'm sure the idea was to showcase Robles one last time - maybe a good outing would have netted the Twins a low-A prospect instead of just cash considerations. Like almost all Twins moves this year, it backfired as Robles imploded and got injured. Oh and lost the game for the team while he was it it. So now the Twins get nothing for him. And Rogers goes on the IL, one more trade piece down the tubes. This bullpen really is the worst. Sigh. -

Rooker seems to be coming around a bit. A little early to be officially excited, but he's hit safely in the past 3 games with 2 HRs and a double.- 13 replies

Yeah I guess I was kind of building it up for effect there. The bullpen plus the Shoemaker/Happ/Dobnak stuff is unsurvivable.- 17 replies

Last time I checked the Twins were doing perfectly horrendous with all of those guys in the regular lineup. April and May were disasters.- 17 replies

Week in Review: Mounting Losses
bighat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Give Terry Francona, Dave Roberts, or Kevin Cash this lineup and the Twins are 15 games over .500, not 15 below. Selling off once-in-a-lifetime talent like Buxton because your manager is overmatched and can't adjust seems foolish.- 17 replies

Game Score: Twins 5, Angels 4
bighat replied to Thiéres Rabelo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Checked the score - holy cow, the Twins came back from a 4-0 deficit by chipping away! We won indeed! I agreed with your other points but I wanted to respectfully disagree with your thoughts on Happ. JA Happ is the worst starter in baseball. His record is 5-5 with a 6.14 ERA in 95 innings pitched. The only pitcher who's even in the same conversation is Mike Foltynewicz down in TX, who is 2-10 with a 6.11 ERA in 97 innings pitched. Even all the xStats look bad for Happ. So quite literally, he's either the worst or 2nd worst starter in the entire game of baseball. And he's old. No contender is going to give up even a shred of their future for this guy. He was a real solid MLB pitcher in his day, just doesn't have it anymore. These things happen. Jeffers, Gordon, and Larnach coming through along with Sano - gotta love it. Keep playing these guys when they're hot! Hope Gordon is starting again tonight.- 12 replies

Gracias Nelson! Class act all the way, Twins wouldn't have won 2 straight division titles without you. Great guy, great teammate, we fans were really lucky to have him playing for our home team the past few years.

Wow - interested to learn more about these 2 right handers. Are they Bailey Ober clones? Even if they are, I think it's a good deal. Lightening might strike and one of those guys could prove to be a useful starter on this team. I'd like to see them in Minneapolis in short order. At first glance I like the trade. Twins needed arms, they got some. Let 'em rip.

Game Score: Twins 7, White Sox 2
bighat replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great questions you asked, I don't know the answers to all but I share your feelings! As for the question about Colome, it's possible but unlikely. Maybe we'll get some cash considerations or something. But honestly, what contender out there wants to bring Alex Colome into their bullpen? The guy has been awful in tight games, starting from Day 1. His recent "success" if we can call it that seems to mostly come when pitching in low leverage situations. I just don't see anyone in a pennant race taking the gamble. With the Twins luck he'll catch fire after the deadline and be lights out in August & Sept.- 8 replies

Game Score: Twins 7, White Sox 2
bighat replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Lots of positive stuff last night. Polanco has put his early season struggles way back in the rear view mirror. Way back when Donaldson signed, many of us couldn't even figure out where Polanco would hit. 8th? 9th? But the guy has played himself right back into the heart of the order where he should be. About the most consistent bat the Twins have, aside from Cruz. No long slumps, no 4 strikeout games, he puts the ball in play which this team needs. Good to see Max go deep also. Nice effort Big Mike, good luck wherever you may land.- 8 replies

I also want the Twins to get true immediate value in 2022 if they trade Berrios. The further down in the system a player is (even a highly ranked one), the less likely they are to become a major league asset. The Twins may still have a window to compete in 2022, I don't think they should wave the white flag on next year just yet.

Game Score: White Sox 9, Twins 5
bighat replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Join the club. The year of the juiced ball in 2019 really screwed the Twins, as the front office decided to push all in on the "HR or nothing" philosophy. But then MLB changed the balls, and now look where we are. Of course, having the worst bullpen in baseball also has something to do with it! Another game snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Saw Polanco's HR in the 8th and was like "heeyyy, look at that swagger" but the Twins bullpen quickly lit the dumpster back on fire. -
Game Score: White Sox 5, Twins 3
bighat replied to Nate Palmer's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
How this team continues to take momentum and flush it down the toilet is incredible. Mitch Garver comes off the DL after 2 months and hits two homers! Right after the team came back in the first game....Twins lose. A couple weeks ago the Twins came to Chicago on a winning streak and Donaldson leads off two games in a row with HRs. Dude is FIRED UP! Twins lose both games. Earlier in the season the Twins finally looked to end their extra innings curse in Oakland after Buxton hits a huge 2-run HR in the 10th. Buxton jogs around the bases pumping his fist. Dugout is pumped! Twins blow it. Never seen anything like it. Incredible return for Garver, certainly something to celebrate in a dark season. -
Game Score (Game 2): Tigers 5, Twins 4

At least the Twins gave their fans an on-brand performance. Two games in a row that most teams would have won, the Twins lost 'em both by 1 run. Are they still leading the league in 1-run losses? Briefly caught Morneau talking about how bad the bullpen has been, I believe it's been 2x as bad as the league average, worst in the league, and how that more than anything has led to this disasterous season. I'd be happy if Rogers was traded, the guy is still OK but not even close to dominant, his 2019 year is getting further and further back in the rear view mirror. For fans like me who were at least hoping to watch the team play quality baseball in the 2nd half, this was a dose of harsh reality. Nothing really to look forward to except for analyzing the trade hauls. -
Great points overall, but I do disagree with your take on Jeffers. You say he's "starting to figure things out", but over the past 21 days he's hitting just .111 - he's got 3 total hits in the past 3 weeks. Now he has walked 9 times during that time frame, which is something....but overall his numbers don't point to me that he's anywhere close to figuring things out. Rortvedt is fairing no better, also hitting .111 in the past 21 days. If this team was in a race right now, I'd imagine we'd be seeing a lot of Willians Astudillo at the C position right now. Frankly, I can't see how Astudillo isn't looking at these numbers and wondering why the heck he's in St. Paul right now.

Twins Prospect Retrospective: LHP Charlie Barnes
bighat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Yeah...his minor league numbers this year are pretty similar to our old friend Stephen Gonsalves, who's got just about the same stats on the Red Sox AAA affiliate this year. Gonsalves is just one year older than Barnes, believe it or not. But you gotta kick the tires on these guys and I do think he deserves a shot. I'm excited to see him pitch - you never know until you run them out there and let them play. Competitors find a way, and Barnes is getting an opportunity. Let's go Charlie!- 29 replies

3 Twins Second Half Storylines to Follow
bighat replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Cleveland isn't looking too good. The Twins are just 7 games back of the Tribe. Could the Twins claw their way back to .500 by the end of the season and catch the Indians for 2nd place? I doubt it, but that would at least be fun to track. Sadly, even if this team catches fire and finishes with a .500 record, it's going to be remembered as a colossal failure nonetheless. I'm most interested in seeing some rookie pitching. Actually, any new pitching. Ian Hamilton should be in the bullpen ASAP. Can we get this Barnes kid up? Will Balazovich get a start or two at the end of the year? I really hate how teams meddle with service time, because it means we often don't get to see the highest ranked prospects until next May. What kind of bizarro world is that? The BEST prospects get held back! -
Reflecting on the Best and Worst First Half Ever
bighat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Good perspective. Yes, 2021 is a super frustrating year, but at least we have baseball! Last year's abbreviated season, with the cardboard heads and the rule changes, paired with the fact that we were all living through a very weird and unsettling time - that's a true "lost season". Glad we have baseball, outside, with fans back in the seats. Much more enjoyable to watch....especially when they win. Target Field is indeed a gem - I always found it strange to focus on the food prices: it's a baseball stadium, not a restaurant! -
I don't say "he's not any good" but I must admit I'm confused at everyone here who is speaking about Trevor Larnach like he's the next Justin Morneau or something. You know which rookies impressed me? Aaron Judge. Pete Alonso. Yordan Alvarez. Ronald Acuna. Cody Bellinger. Heck even our own Luis Arraez. Look up those guys' rookie stats. Those guys had their fans excited because they knew they had difference makers. I'm way more excited about Kirilloff. I like Larnach but I don't think he's ready and I don't think running him out there every day to strike out 4 times (which he's done three times in the past 12 days) is helping.
