  1. Exactly, I'm not sure why it's hard for people to understand it's an either/or situation. What other options for the 25th spot are people expecting to emerge? I don't get the irrational anamosity toward Colabello's age when the likely other option is 29-year-old Drew Butera. That is unless someone is really, really cheering for 27-year-old Wilkin Rameriz or 30-year-old Brandon Boggs. Or is it possible they are still pining for 42-year-old Jim Thome?
  2. I think we're getting a little ahead of ourselves. Escobar has hardly played for the Twins at the MLB level and Hernandez has yet to do so. I'm not saying Escobar won't be a Twin for five or six years but this is already his last option year. If his bat doesn't develop, five or six years is a long time to waste a roster spot without exposing him to waivers, especially if he ends up getting competition from the likes of Rosario, Dozier and Santana going forward.
  3. Any chance Colabello was passive-agressively punished for playing in the WBC instead of staying with the Twins camp? The 25th roster spot was always going to come down to Butera vs Gardy's request for power on the bench. Colabello seems like an unlikely choice at first glance, but it would not have been a novelty pick, there simply were just few options. I would have to assume the bench bat to counter the Butera option now falls to Wilken Rameriz who is hardly less of a novelty than Colabello. Of course they could decide to sign Thome, or perhaps Colabello's reassignment could be a show of power by Ryan showing Gardy now before he can get public support, that no, he will not get a bat for thebench.
  4. Mauer put a ton of balls into the first row of LF at the Metrodome that year. Those don't even get to the warning track at Target Field.
  5. And the Twins would pay $5.8 million for premium defense at a premium postion when it came to the man Gomez was traded for.
  6. Having an emergency catcher is only one way to go about solving this issue. Moving the remaining catcher behind the plate and losing the DH for a few innings of one game isn't the end of the world either. Having a pitcher hit if it's a low leverage situation is just fine, if not, pinch hit for they guy, what's the huge issue? With no snark intended, is a pitcher batting that much worse than Butera?
  7. What's the over/under on how many swings Mauer takes against Deduno tonight? Assuming 2 or 3 at bats, I'm putting the over/under at 2.
  8. So is it Hendriks and DeVries fighting for the fifth spot, or does Deduno have a shot if he shuts down Mauer and the Americans in the WBC tonight?
  9. When I think of Reusse, I think more of his editorializing and not so much of his deep connections into the Twins front office. Seven of the teams top ten prospects AND Santana AND Tonkin in a two year span? All of them could do it, but I doubt the organization will put themselves in a postion where everyone's on the same arbitration schedule.
  10. Is it strange that I think the Royals will improve because of better offensive output? I think the youngsters will click having now played a couple MLB seasons together. They put a lot of effort and dollars into the rotation but Santana is a time bomb and Shields pitches much better indoors than out. I don't think that rotation is as good as they think it is.
  11. I love Summit and Sierra Nevada as well. My California relatives are from Chico and drink a lot of Sierra Nevada; they wanted to know a comprable beer and I told them Summit. Now when they come every summer they bring a 12 pack of Sierra Nevada and leave with a 12 pack of Summit.
  12. You have Baxendale, Melotakis, Rogers, Duffy, Bard and Powell from last years draft class getting a chance at starting. Is this what you would do with these young men or is this information that you have been made aware of? Within reason, I'd like to see most of those arms from the 2012 draft to get looks as a starter, but I was starting to assume it was just wishfull thinking. Aside from Rogers, Bard and Berrios, I believe the only draft pick last year to get starts was Andre Martinez who didn't dazzle but the Twins did pay over-slot to ensure he didn't go to college. Would you have him with the short season crew, or is the team not likely to keep him in the rotation?
  13. If the Twins picked a local kid to get a break on the slot recomendation they would be rightfully lynched.
  14. Yeah, I agree, the oldies will be clogging up Rochester. While none of the AAAA pitchers the Twins will surely carry in Rochester should block Meyer or May, they might anyway seeing as DeVries, Hendriks, Deduno, Walters and Vasquez all have MLB experience and are reasonable options to call up to the majors at a moments notice. The Twins may find it hard to part with them due to having marginal usefulness.
  15. I think we're glossing over an important sentance in the interview, Liriano says the Pirates offer was better. Not surprisingly, the Twins did not offer what the Pirates did. Without a firm figure, it's kind of hard to say if the Twins were right or wrong in their assesment.
  16. He'll probably be more entertaining than frustrating; when his salary is that low, cutting him hurts very little and benching him is always an option. What a waste though, here's a guy who's going to have 1,000 hits before he turns 28 despite his past anitcs and effort. What could have been with this guy.
  17. I never used the word hate, as a rule I generally don't use that word toward people, nor have I attacked you, the vitriol is coming from your side. I've been called ignorant, unchritable and now prejeduced by you since lunch. As for my reasons for my lack of respect, I've listed those already. I rightly assumed you had a personal connection to the family and appologized that the words said about them wounded, but you're not going to swing the opinion of them on an internet forum by going on the attack. Perhaps they give to charities and maybe they treat their employees decently, but their most high profile venture happens to be one of the states most charished possesions. If they wanted to have an untarnished image, they should have thought about that in their dealings with the one business that is in the media most often. They didn't think that way, or they didn't care, either way they've used the Twins as a weapon to reap huge profits, and all from the pockets of the people who love the team the most.
  18. Oh I forgot, my vote is for #1, though Reusse's hyperbole is annoying. No sane fan thinks any owner would spend unlimited money, nor would any sane Twins fan think the team would spend East Coast kind of money. The hyperbole for option two is also awful. Few say Ryan shouldn't rebuild, most just agree that he didn't need to put such little effort into free agency this year. Way to be objective Reusse!
  19. He wasn't old at the time, he was quite young then. Your defense of the Pohlad's is pretty steadfast, if you know them I'm sorry I've offended and I respect you sticking up for them if that is the case. That being said, I have/had little to no respect for Carl Pohlad. He manipulated the state of Minnesota in every underhanded way he could concieve. He took advantage of it's citizens from the first farm he foreclosed on, to the current tax payers that he demanded more from than he justly should have. As for the kids, hopefully the apples fell far from the tree. That's not often the case with children who were exposed to extreme weath, but I do not know them.
  20. Are you saying he atoned for his sins by donating to charities? He was the villian in The Grapes of Wrath for crying out loud. He was part of the problem long before he was part of the solution. Still wondering why you won't address the disproportionate amount of stadium funding he contributed, you were the one to brought it up originally.
  21. I don't mind public subsidies, but I'd like to hear you justify the fact that the Pohlad's demanded the public pay for so much more than the ownership groups in St. Louis and Detroit? The figures are above.
  22. The Tigers owner Mike Illitch paid for 66% of Comerica park, the Cardinals paid for 88% of the New Busch stadium while the Pohlads only paid 33% for theirs. Illitch paid $175 million for his $300 million stadium, the Cardinals ownership paid $320 million of their $365 million stadium while the Carl Pohlad paid $125 million for his $585 million stadium. The Tigers and Cardinals are the teams the Twins should look to as one is the cream of the AL Central, while the other is the cream of the comparable market-size. As fans we got a bad break. It was good that Carl Pohlad bought the team from the even more mizerly Calvin Griffith but the improvement was not great. There aren't too many good things you can say about a man who made his fortune buying up risky mortgages during the Great Depression so he could immediately foreclose on the unfortunate families as soon as they were a minute late on a payment.
  23. I'd hope Cedar Rapids is his landing spot. It's not a race or anything but a good half dozen or so high schoolers already tasted A ball last year. It's not exactly an excellerated push by putting the #2 overall pick in the Midwest League his second season as a pro.
  24. Ha, I'm not sure that "out over his skis" has ever been used to discribe a baseball player. Perhaps Berrios will assume he's talking about being pulled behind a speed boat.
  25. Yawn, I thought we were contemplating Wade for a second. There's your left-handed 3B complement for Plouffe.
