  1. The last month of the season I'd like to see both Plouffe and Dozier get some positional flexability due to who the Twins have lurking behind them. This should already be happening considering we are at the experience and experiments stage of the season. Though with a manager not under contract and fighting for his job next year I understand why this hasn't, and likely will not happen.
  2. Ha, this part made me roll my eyes. Joel Sherman is a New York Post writer and clearly has a case of classic East Coast our-used-junk-is-better-than-anything-you-haveitis. Usually it happens with Yankee players and prospects but I guess the Mets have gained some steam in terms of this propaganda. No way is a 26-year-old pitcher four years from free agency, two years removed from the ROY the return for a 1B the Mets considered DFA'ing in July and may decide to non-tender this off season.
  3. You are way overvaluing these players. Only Correia has a 1.1 WAR, the rest of the guys I listed are negligible or negative yet the Twins still paid multiple millions for them. These guys are not league average players, they are replacement level and superior teams WOULD consider these guys, waiver wire/DFA candidates. In fact the Twins did just that with Marquis and they might as well have done it with Carroll. Besides, even with Correia's 1.1 WAR, what good is it doing the Twins? They are spending money on multiple guys of Correia's ilk or worse as opposed to one guy who would actually boost the rotation. Correia's been an anomoly (barely) but if you want to use WAR, how would signing four guys with a 0 WAR be better than 1 guy with a 3 WAR? 4x0 is still 0 which is less than 3. It's treading water at best and more accurately just slowing the descent of an already sinking ship.
  4. Carroll, Correia, Pelfrey, Marquis, Doumit? No thanks, what they bring can reasonably be replicated by the low cost minor leaguers and the AAAA'ers the Twins love to recycle. You can also get plenty of free agent vets on or near league minimum deals, the Twins do this with the bullpen yearly. These signings are more wasteful of a limited budget than taking a chance on two actual upgrades. Time to go big or go home, this team dosn't need a half dozen more of these kind of free agents. Free agency should be used for upgrades, not bottom barrel replacement players. Those can be found in Rochester and on the waiver wire, and cheaply.
  5. Plenty of pitchers have improved after Tommy John surgery, and aside from the guys in AAA, only Gibson has any upside. I feel I need to refute those points even though I agree that I don't want Pelfrey back. This team doesn't need any more back-end pitchers like Pelfrey and if they sign one more starter who can't sniff a league average K% Terry Ryan needs to step aside and let a less stubborn and more ingenuitive GM take over.
  6. Even if we disagree on Doumit and Willingham, the criteria for Mobility wasn't "tradeability" it was young and cheap vs old and immovable. The Twins don't have many players on the 25-man roster that are under 26. Many of the guys we think of as "young" are journeymen minor leaguers that are simply fresh to the league. Only Arcia and Ryan Presley are young players who are on the 25-man and have regularly contributed this year.
  7. The strikeouts don't bother me too terribly as he is pretty good at taking walks. In the past he's a pretty decent OBP guy. Of course the strikeouts are going to bother Gardy/Ryan. I believe Davis is a guy who hits to all fields so he's probably a guy the Twins would like in that regard. Though who knows, maybe hitting to all fields is a contributing factor to his struggles. Comparing him to Chris Davis isn't going to make him easier to get though.
  8. Milwaukee, really? Well if they can't count Braun currently is it fair to count Mauer? Even so, they have Segura, Gomez, Rameriz, Lucroy and Aoki. That doesn't even take into account that their worst starting pitcher is better than the Twins best starting pitcher. The White Sox have a pretty terrible offensive situation, that's fair, though at least they have a solid stable of starters. Again the Marlins? No way, young Mr.'s Stanton, Yelich and Fernandez trump Mauer and Perkins in my book.
  9. I feel bad for the guy. What changed since this spring? Why wasn't this decided early in the summer? Also, that was some jab by Berardino throwing the subtle note about Alex Wood being drafted 13 picks after Chargois. Completely unrelated and disjointed compared to the informative direction of the article but totally in tune with the underlying tone, that being his implied opinion that the Twins are not very good at drafting pitchers.
  10. Yup, the positive posts seemed more disappointed with losing a local heartthrob. Is he good looking ChiTown? Because I'd pick Dozier over him any day.
  11. The legend for the Mobility catagory is "do they have a lot of young, cheap players, or old immovable guys" Those guys are not young, they are old. Even if you want to interpret the word "movable" as tradeable, Correia, Doumit and Willingham are likely not very tradeable, and Mauer would only be tradeable to to about four teams. But regardless, on a scale of "Young and Cheap" to "Old and Immovable" everyone of those guys is on the "Old and Immovable" side of the fulcrum. I don't see how there is any debate, despite the rebuild, the Twins are not a young team.
  12. Anyone have access to the list? The Twins are listed as the 5th worst for MLB talent. Which teams are 1-4? Houston surely but who else has worse MLB level talent, the Cubs? Not Miami, I'd take Yelich, Stanton and their young rotation over what the Twins currently have. The White Sox young staff should also trump the Twins.
  13. As mentioned regarding Mobility, the Twins have cheap guys but they aren't good enough to move. Probably more importantly, they don't have a lot of young guys. Sure they have cheap players but most are 27+. I think the mobility is about right. The Finance is low though considering the Twins aren't the tenth smallest market and they have next to no payroll. Unless this is instead taking into consideration the (apparant league-wide, not just the negatives on this site) perception that the Twins are cheap and unwilling to spend. In other words, the best farm system in the league does not grant automatic playoff spots.
  14. Yeah, they are finally joining the 1990's! Seriously though, I am looking forward to these guys. Time to diversify the coaching staff and front office too.
  15. Agreed. A team can get lucky and compete, ethier due to positive factors in support of the team, or negative factors in opposition of the opposition. Still, this team is not on the right track. I'm sure they will find positions for Sano, Buxton and Meyer once ready, but what about the supporting pieces? They have yet to identify anyone aside from Dozier who has looked at all encouraging. They still have a roster full of 28-year-olds, most of whom look to be positioning themselves for a roster spot next year. The rebuild isn't happening now, and are we really going to be considering 2014 a rebuild season if Willingham, Thomas, Presley, Plouffe, Colabello, Doumit, Mastroianni, Rameriz, Bernier, Correia and/or Deduno are going to be considered for the 25-man roster?
  16. They need to go 8-18 the rest of the way then? That should be close but I like your odds. They play five playoff contenders the rest of the way but all they have to do is win one game a series. It might come down to if Cleveland is still fighting the last series of the year.
  17. Hicks is finishing the regular season on a bit of a cold streak. On the heels of perhaps his most impressive run of the season, he has managed only 1 extra base hit over the last ten games with an OPS of mearly .531. One last regular season series to go until Hicks has a chance to play playoff hero once again.
  18. Looking at Pittsburgh's 40-man roster, I think it is fair to say that had the Twins not taken a player from that list, Pressley was very likely the top option to be DFA'd to make room for Morneau.
  19. I think many feel this way and I don't think it's wrong. I actually would like for the young players to get a taste of winning early, but really, the only young player of much significance on the roster right now is Arcia, maybe Pinto. Hicks and Gibson likely won't be recalled and the Twins don't seem to be planning on bringing May, Meyer, Sano or Rosario to Target Field, they weren't even promoted to Rochester to learn about playoff baseball. The roster is a mess of career minor leaguers and declining vets. Many people are still firmly standing behind the management of this team, but those who are not may also hope all the losses may spur a front office change no matter how slight a chance that may be.
  20. This is a pretty said state of affairs, and I don't mean the lack of talent. Look at the crappy Astros, they are terrible but at least their oldest regular is only 27 and it's already pretty clear which guys will be asked to contribute next year. What a jumbled mess we have in Minnesota. A bunch of older AAAA players fighting for jobs and declining vets still under contract next year. The Twins only have 6 players under 27 on the roster right now, one if them is Arcia who has played one game in two weeks and another is Pinto who has played one game total. This is unacceptable, why are we OK with a management that is bungling something as simple as a gut-the-roster rebuild? Why are these 28-year-old+ career minor leaguers even on the radar? One or two I could see but this many?
  21. However that is assuming Mauer's offense increases with a move from catcher. Logic would dictate it should, but the stats say otherwise. It's not a large sample size but in 836 plate appearnces at DH, Mauer OPS is .828 compared to .889 as a catcher. In 232 PA as a 1B his OPS is .831. I'm not saying it won't improve, but I don't know that we should be expecting a .100 bonus in OPS if a move to another position occurs.
  22. Assuming Willingham and hopefully Arcia get regular playing time the remainder of the season, I doubt Hicks gets a call up. Ryan just traded Morneau for his new "prize." He's going to try to prove that he made a good deal by limiting Gardenhire's options and keeping Pressley in the lineup daily. This is the guy he is going to try to sell to the public is a reasonable return for a much beloved Twin. The Twins are already on spin control with this deal, I've heard Bremer imply twice already that Pressley only was in the minors because McCutcheon was blocking him, as if there aren't three outfield spots and he didn't get called up with a terrible RF situation in Pittsburgh. I've also heard both Ryan and Bremer refer to the 28-year-old as a "young man." Ryan will want him to play, not Hicks.
  23. If we agree that it would have been preferable to let Morneau finish the season instead of getting these two, why are you disagreeing with me? I've made my main point very clear, I don't want these two 27-year-olds cluttering up the already cluttered 40 man. On a different note, Morneau is hot, at this point he doesn't deserve a qualifying offer, but if his September is similar to his August, he just may. This is a deep draft class and it certainly would be nice to have another high pick. If it was a 1 in five chance, even a 1 in 10 chance that the Twins could offer and Morneau refuse a qualifying offer, I'f prefer that gamble over this return.
  24. You realize the view is the same from my position? Reason states you get what you pay for. I have reason on my side while you only have faith that Ryan can do no wrong.
  25. I've complemented Ryan on the above trades, and I am more than happy to admit that I've liked many of his moves, but yes, if the Twins are rebuilding, I think he should ALWAYS go for upside in a trade. There is no need to take a variaty of approaches. You can get the same production that the Pressleys and Welkers and Hernandez' and Escobars give you with minimal or even minor league free agents. You generally don't get upside on the free agent market unless you pay for it. And clearly Ryan won't, so get it in trades, and in trades get it exclusively. No More Filler.
