  1. Why do they have to choose betwee Min or May? Why can't they have them both? The guy is likely going to cost $2-3 million per year. The Twins normally spend twice that on one single pitcher who everyone can clearly see will be a bust before spring training even gets under way.
  2. Yeah, I thought the same thing. If the Twins got their hands on him I'd want them to try to stretch him out. I never understood what happend there. The guy only had one full season of organized minor league ball and that was when he was placed almost immediately in AA. It didn't go well and his stock went down. Still, the Royals thought enough of him to give him a spot on the 25-man the next year despite only having that one season of minor league action.
  3. Boras client or not, a pitcher with a questionable shoulder from the KBO won't be expensive. I wouldn't be surprised if $3 million per year would be the high end estimation, especially considering he wants out and has less leverage than most Asian imports. Certainly a cheaper and higher upside choice than the zero-ceiling, back-end starters this team normally signs.
  4. I'm not totally against signing him, but he just isn't consistant. While his OPS is around .740, last year was the first time he ever had a full season OBP over .300. It was .288 the previous two seasons. It seems that traditionally, guys who have very low OBP are the ones who are inconsistant throughout the season. Guys who struggle to get on base tend to be the ones who go on extended cold streaks. I like the power, but as discussed, it likely won't play as well at TF. I'm not saying he shouldn't be signed, I'm just saying that his disaster percentage is likely pretty high.
  5. I'm not big on Saltalamacchia as I think his offense is historically way too inconsistant. I'm not against him exactly but three years is a lot for such an questionable non-pitcher. The timing of how these guys sign might come into play though. Saltalamacchia is getting all the press, and with McCann off the table he might be the next to go. If the Twins signed him, it would leave them with a lot less maneuverability to sign the needed two or three starters. On the other hand, starters may be more inclined to come to Minnesota if they first signed a well respected signal caller. He currently seems to have that rep anyway, though I suspect that might have more to do with catching veteran pitchers Lester, Buccholz, Lackey, Dempster and Peavy.
  6. And weak on the mound. Every dime that goes into a catcher with sporadic offensive production won't be going to upgrade the pitching staff. Why do you say any given move by the Twins won't be stupid? They aren't infallible, they've made numerous stupid decisoins over the years just like every other club. In fact most decisions they make, including ones that you, I or any other fan endorses at the time, has the potential to look stupid a short while later.
  7. The Twins don't generally trade guys when they are at their peak value. Lately they've been selling low.
  8. Well I guess my concern is that thus far this off-season most pitchers have been going for reasonable prices while the position players have been getting overpaid. Seeing as the Twins need pitching more than anything (or any team) they should be devoting their efforts to that front.
  9. While I understand a reluctance to put too much stock in small samples, the article said the same thing he did. It's not like Fangraphs bases their theories on assumptions. Just from the eye test though, Target Field seems to inhibit left handed line-drive hitters. Grip-it-and-rip-it uppercut hitters don't seem to have a problem, but line drive hitters don't usually seem to have enough loft to carry the wall.
  10. Thanks for coming by Jack. For what it's worth, if answering our foolish questions prevents you from finding quality free agents, we may consider making the sacrifice and set you free.
  11. They shouldn't sign him to one year. The Twins need to deviate from their reliance on contact heavy pitchers, this stubbornness is really frustrating. Even if he is an upgrade, there are better upgrades available.
  12. This is good news in my book. Get these high contact arms off the shopping list, they are always oh so tempting to the Twins.
  13. He failed here then too. Who shoots for fifth place?
  14. Detroit did kick in $30 million for Fielder, that brings his annual salary down to less than $20 million. That's less than Mauer. But while I'd like Fielder over the next couple of years, I think he's playing on borrowed time with that body, I don't think he's productive at all in a few years.
  15. It is enjoyable to see the Yankees brass loose their #$^% though. Even though it's unfeasable I'd like to see the Pirates keep bringing it up just to egg them on.
  16. I'm wating for Fangraphs, BA or MLBTR to make the second list. Well not exactly your second list, I don't want a list of just the guys the Twins would target, that would mostly consist of swingmen with a low K%. But I am waiting for a list of the players left unprotected with high ceilings.
  17. For a change, I am still optimistic about this offseason. Agents and sports writers both are claiming the Twins have strong interest in top free agent arms. This is unprecedented information under Terry Ryan's management. Still, for those telling others to settle down, there is reason for concern. The trade for Kris Johnson, his presence on the 40-man and the statement that he, Duensing and Swarzak may need to start next year is simply too much of the same troubled and archaic pitching philosophy that continues to lose games for this team. Still, the multiple reports tying the Twins to top arms is a new development and until those guys sign with other clubs I'll give the team the benefit of the doubt, even if only for the sake of not having egg on my face come March.
  18. I just also don't think the Twins will be getting discounts on extensions for these guys, they'd need to trade for early arbitration or pre-arb guys to get discounts. So if you're paying the same as you will in free agency, you might as well just sign free agents and keep the prospects.
  19. Can we stop "trying" something and start "doing" something? If you're "trying" Kris Johnson, it means you're pretty unsure. Why don't you go "do" something that is more likely to succeed. I don't get the extreme level of cloak and dagger stuff. I would think letting it slip that you're interested in specific free agents would seem to only encourage more free agents to be interested in you. That stuff is leaking this year from the Twins more than usual and at least in the case of Garza and Arroyo, they have said interest is mutual. Why wouldn't you let your best players help in recruiting? It just seems like another instance where the Twins don't use a free resource available to them. Hell, Perkins could call up Garza and say "Hey buddy, I know we both had beef with this club back in the day but things are different and I love it here, come get on the ground floor of this thing." The Tigers don't seem to have a problem with Torii Hunter recruiting Joe Nathan. The Tigers were still able to keep the huge Fielder/Kinsler trade on the QT.
  20. I don't know that Achter has MLB stuff, but I just don't like protecting all these late 20's AAAA players. This team is rebuilding, are Albers, Johnson, Mastroianni, Colabello, Presley and Fryer really the kind of players this team needs to be protecting? A thought on Wimmers and Oliveros. Are the Twins rolling the dice on these two knowing it's unlikely a year removed from TJ surgery neither will likely be able to pitch a full season and stay on a 40-man? I'm not sure I like that gamble for if they get placed on a season ending DL I believe the buyer gets to retain their services the following year and gets another attempt to keep them on the roster. If I was a devious GM I might do just that and see if the player is agreeable to the arrangement. They should be as, a full season on the MLB DL would help with service time and he would get his MLB salary as opposed to riding buses another season in AAA.
  21. He has had many positive things to say about the Twins, but not everything has to be glowing. We don't need to be in the business of advertising for the team. They are in the entertainment industry, they need to please us, not the other way around. Regarding the drug issue, this is Rosario's fault, but I wonder if the Twins have some kind of centralized contact that the players can reach to check whether or not they can take something. I also wonder if such a contact exists if the Twins make this available in Spanish.
  22. Adding Darnell and trading for and keeping Kris Johnson on the 40-man roster seems kind of strange. Diamond and Albers are still on the list too. Seems like four guys are filling the same whim here.
  23. I don't disagree, but Johnson should be near the top of the cut list so why go after him? There's room on the roster but there will still be some guys left out in the cold, it's not a given everyone will be safe from getting picked.
  24. From what I can see, only one person said he strikes out way too much and no one said he wasn't showing signs of improvement. Those throwing up red flags all seem to have concerns with the lack of walks. And it is a giant red flag. We are talking about a player who had 30% more HR than the 2nd place finisher and 20% more RBI. The guys he was facing should have been pitching around him regularly, particularly after Buxton and Hicks got promoted mid-season. Considering the power numbers he put up, half of those 31 BB were probably intentional or on intentionally unhittable pitches. The number of walks he took by actully working a count probably is closer to single digits which is awful considering the lack of control from 20-year-old pitchers in Low A ball.
