  1. Hughes, Arroyo, and Vargas Maybe, No, No. This team does not need more contact heavy pitchers. I'm not a big Hughes fan, but Arroyo and Vargas should not be considered under any scenario. This team puts the questionable infield defense to work enough as it is. Get league average strikeout pitchers or better, there are plenty of them this offseason. Otherwise turn to internal options.
  2. Hughes and Correia are nothing alike. Hughes is a flyball pitcher with a 20% K rate who throws a 92 mph fastball. Correia is a groundball pitcher with a 15% K rate and a 90 mph fastball. I'm not sold on Hughes, but I think the emphasis on groundball pitchers in a pitcher friendly park with a questionable infield defense is maybe misguided. I'd much prefer a guy who can manage a leage average strikeout rate even if it means more flyballs.
  3. I really hope the Twins change their tune on Johnson. I don't think $10 million is too much for him, I think it's low in fact unless there are medical concerns that weren't addressed with his recent surgery. On a one year deal, he really is the only player the Twins could reasonably get who has the potential to be A) evaluated for future front of the rotation candidacy, or flipped for a good haul come the trade deadline. If he returns to form there's no reason to think he can't get a similar return to what Garza and Greinke got the past two deadlines.
  4. Agreed. No agent is going to trash any team if they are trying to get them to sign clients, but this one seemed pretty sincere. Every indication is that the Twins front office is pretty well respected. I may not agree with everything Ryan and company do but I still recognize them as honest and amicable business individuals.
  5. Nice work Parker, you got yourself and this site linked: Twins Notes: Willingham, Johan, Rotation, Sano: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com Your work is recognized admirably world wide!
  6. I'm interested in those three names, mostly because, as your criteria states, they throw hard and strike guys out. Thier durability has been brought up but likely only Kazmir gets multi years and most projections only give him two. I wouldn't mind a longer term guy but I'd be happy if those guys were in the 2014 rotation. The injury stuff doesn't bother me as much though. I guess I look at it differently; sure you could get nothing out of these guys, but even if you only got 140 innings and had to use Albers/Hendriks/Diamond for the other 60 innings, I think 200 IP from a combination of Johnson/AAAA guy is better than one bargain basement innings eater guy throwing 200 innings. The guys they get are usually no better than the AAAA guys anyway.
  7. The Eastern League playoffs? Have you looked at the rotations of the playoff teams from this past year? Hey, I have high hopes for Meyer and still think Gibson can be decent, but not one of those guys would crack the playoff roation for the four teams in the LCS this past year.
  8. Wolfson also tweeted the Twins have called on Johan Santana and also Scott Kazmir:
  9. I'm sure once rumors start getting hot and heavy individual free agents will get their own thread, but I thought I'd make a one in the interim where we can list which pitchers have been linked to the team and who is the source. Most years we don't seem to have this luxery as there were few links but mostly just speculation. Maybe things ARE different this year, free agency is just underway and we have reports of the Twins checking in on several arms. Darren Wolfson says the Twins have formally expressed interest in Ervin Santana: La Velle E Neal also reports that the Twins have checked in with agents regarding Johan Santana, Dan Haren, Ricky Nolasco and Scott Feldman: Could Johan return to the Twins? Don't count it out | Star Tribune Mike Berardino says he has a source that has advised him the Twins have reached out to Bronson Arroyo though an offer has yet to be made and he states another source says the Twins are interested in Phil Hughes and Jason Vargas: Twins interested in Bronson Arroyo, Phil Hughes, Jason Vargas - TwinCities.com That's eight names, all bigger than last year's top pick up.
  10. But they oporate with a fraction of the budget by choice. Their revenue is not a "fraction" of most teams. So if you are against the Twins taking on risks in the form of free agents, can we assume that you disapprove of the risks the other teams make in free agency? Are the Twins right for not taking these risks and all the other teams are wrong? Because the results on the field don't indicate the Twins are right. Unless the goal we are talking about is making money and not winning baseball games.
  11. That was pretty good but I liked the Fangraphs one better: The New National TV Contracts And 2014 Payrolls | FanGraphs Baseball The MLBTR one seems to be using all future commitments, regarless of how many years existing contracts are spread out across. In that sense it implies that the Twins don't have much wiggle room this year because Mauer still has $115M left on his deal and the Twins highest payroll was around $120M. That doesn't show the true relationship as that the Twins only have about $60M committed to 2014 and to get back to that payroll they would be able to double their current figure. (Obvisously they won't, just stating parameters of these two data sets)
  12. I should have caught the implication that you were thinking of minor league filler as opposed to major league filler. Not that there's much distinction between the two for the Twins. I'm interested in moving any and all expendable vets. I guess I don't care if they were expressly signed to be flipped or not. I'd like the idea of my GM playing the market with those ulterior motives though.
  13. I'm not very interested either, but we're talking about replacing Florimon. Gordon has gotten on base at every level better than Florimon.
  14. Of course if the Twins made some smart speculations on the free agent market they could get new tradable assets. The guys they signed over the last couple years had next to no trade value. Even Willingham after 2012, who many thought could bring a decent return, was reportedly not worth much.
  15. I agree, but will play devil's advocate for a moment. What if Gibson, Hendriks, Meyer and May had all had the phenominal seasons we were hoping for? Then Correa and Pelfrey would have been blocking them. Pre-season, it wasn't a sure thing all would have production/injury concerns.
  16. Phil Mackey had a piece about the sorry state of the staff yesterday. How to fix the Twins, Part 1: The biggest problem among many problems | 1500 ESPN Twin Cities ? Minnesota Sports News & Opinion (Twins, Vikings, Wolves, Wild, Gophers) | Sportswire: Minnesota Twins In it he listed many of the things the Twins pitchers were last in. One catagory was curveball break. League average was 6.3 inches. Twins pitchers curveballs average a 2.9 inch break. Why would a pitcher bother with that pitch? May I be so bold to suggest that a pitch that doesn't even break three inches should not even be considered a curvball?
  17. I guess I don't understand why signing upper shelf free agents is a shortcut but signing the Correias, Carrolls and Marquis' is not. I fail to see the difference unless shortcut is actually code for money.
  18. I'd be interested at minimal cost, though guys that can play SS usually have an inflated price. I also don't trust Gardy to run him much. Top of the order guys don't usually get a green light with Mauer at the plate, likely to keep the middle infielders from crowding 2B, which is where Mauer likes to hit. However, Gordon likely isn't a top the order guy, he might actually get more opportunities batting 8th or 9th. Florimon surprisingly lead the team in SB this year batting low in the order.
  19. Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed that so many other players seem to be blaming Martin. They keep saying keep it in house and handle it yourself. Sage advice considering Icognito has had a reputation for being mentally unstable, he threatened to kill Martin and the NFL has a recent troubling history of players using firearms inappropriately. "Hey kid, the best move is to go punch the the guy voted 'Dirtiest Player in the NFL' in the nose, things will turn up aces for you!" Many players want to keep this stuff in house? Duh, most aren't affected negatively and they don't want more spotlights showing the other socially unacceptable things that take place in professional locker rooms considering the behavior may be far from professional.
  20. Because I think men would be much more reluctant to include the hazing of women or in front of women, particularly the professional type who may disapprove of the actions. I apologize to all the males I offend when I suggested that young men devoid of the influence of the fairer sex too often behave inappropriately due to a lack of maturity. It was an outrageous claim. I further apologize that I suggested the same men also behave poorly to impress attractive women. I agree that there are parallels to the male athletic world and the atmosphere in investment banking and law firms. In fact I almost made the same comparison to the 1980's Wall Street culture. Not coincidentally, those are also male dominated fields. Martin Scorsese is about to come out with a new film, The Wolf of Wall Street. Check it you if you want to see power hungry men behaving badly toward each other. I'm not sure why you think baseball isn't fun for these guys. Most people work hard, these guys work hard playing a game. If it wasn't fun, these guys would retire after making their first ten million and call it a career.
  21. I think hazing takes place amonst the immature and socially awkward (hmm, so often in a mostly male environment...) because they don't have the social skills to develop a civil and working heirchy. It should be obvious, the players who perform the best, and those with seniority generally should be leading among the rank and file employees. With athletes, there will always the idea in the back of everyone's mind that some Alpha-type youngster is going to think he runs the show because now he's rich and famous. It's stupid and I don't like it, but it's probably hard to cure as long as the game is played by young (immature) men who get paid to have fun all day. Get some women involved and it might taper off. Unless the women are attractive of course, then it probably gets worse.
  22. Feldman doesn't get me too excited. I wouldn't be upset about him because he's proven to be a tradable commodity, but he doesn't seem to be the caliber of pitcher that could lead a rotation. I'd rather take a chance on the lotter tickets like Josh Johnson and the guys Nick Nelson wrote about: Twins Daily - A Look at the Other End of Free Agency I think I'm about out of patience for pitchers who are unable to get strikeouts anywhere close to the league average rate. There should be plenty available, even on one year deals, who can manage at least a 7.0 K/9.
  23. Having depth at a traditionally low depth position doesn't make a team desperate. Not having the depth makes you desperate. Thus the Cardinals have the luxery of doing nothing while the Twins are the ones with desperation on their side. The loaded Cardinals aren't going to do the Twins a favor simply because they can afford to. That would be the first step the Cardinals would take to become un-loaded. Rosario + Arcia does not equal a potential perennial Cy Young contender. Miller has already proven his worth, neither Rosario or Arcia have. The Cardinals being the smartest team in the league are well aware of that. It would take an elite prospect and the Twins only have two of those.
  24. I know gambling isn't this team's favorite activity, but if they were going to stay away from higher priced free agents, I'd rather they roll the dice on multiple guys like this than another no-upside, no-strikeout fifth starter like they usually go after. Take a chance on some of these players, please pass on the Jake Westbrooks, Joe Saunders, Paul Maholms, Mike Pelfreys and even Bronson Arroyos.
  25. Yeah, Oakland did it, and it's likely one of the reasons the Japanese Leagues are considering changing the posting system so that multiple teams are allowed to negotiate with the player.
