  1. Yes, it's not too early to get excited about this stuff, but it does seem too early to be picking our horses already. There seems to be a lot of Turner love right now. He might be the guy but I agree, we need to see that he at least has some gap-to-gap power. If he's going to be just a slap hitter at the MLB level, his ceiling is going to be Elvis Andrus. Would you take Elvis Andrus at #5? Of course, but that's just his ceiling. Generally the type of floor that comes with solid defensive but little power middle infielder is akin to Pedro Florimon. So if you're drafting Elvis Andrus, you better be positive his defense will be elite and he can get on base at an elite level, because without the power, there is next to no margin of error with these kinds of guys.
  2. You need ace caliber pitching to win though. If Kolek is the better prospect you can't pass him up just because you're afraid a pitcher is going to get hurt. You don't win the World Series with second tier free agent starters. They're good to have, but to win you're going to have to get some big power arms in the draft, and the best bets are the ones that go early.
  3. I assume Rosario still plays 2B. Regardless, I think we are all going to be disappointed if we assume Buxton, Hicks, Rosario and Arcia will all be able to hit enough at the MLB level to create a logjam. In my opinion, after Buxton, Arcia is the most likely to be a dependable bat. There will likely be room for him in the OF simply because other prospects won't pan out.
  4. I think the Twins actively shop Duensing and Swarzak to create room with the #5 rotation spot logjam. I think this because I assume they would be easier to move than Diamond/Worley/Deduno.
  5. Actually his WAR last year wasn't too bad. His 0.0 mark was better than Carroll and Parmelee anyway.
  6. I agree, like everyone else, I didn't like the second year for Correia. Gibson probably should be the front runner for that spot simply for the development aspect but he's now likely a wildcard at best. Still, there is plenty of time for this to work out. There really only looks to be three useful free agent starters who will be able to start the season with a club on the free agent market, Correia could be moved.
  7. And the Marlins have the reputation of a cheap team as it is. I'm good with penciling in a lower caliber prospect for them at #2!
  8. I agree that is most likely the scenario. Of course that brings up a pet peeve of this "new school" reporting. Twitter doesn't exactly lend itself to encapsulating the full atmosphere of an interview or even a simple exchange. Maybe I just don't like change, but I don't care much for this kind of journalism. To me this exchange should be in a forum where the author is able to present the full discourse: When asked if Florimon's injury may open the door for Bartlett to take his starting job, Gardenhire refuted the possibility stating, "He's our shortstop." Gardenhire further explained that Bartlett's goal was simply to make the team. 140 characters, give me a break. Don't be a teenager.
  9. Also read that Edgar Ibarra is taking it slow due to his Hepatitis B diagnosis?
  10. Like retired? That seems pretty rash, but it sure helps narrow down the 5th rotation spot.
  11. That is a bit interesting that Gardy mentioned Bartlett but not Escobar. It seems like either Gardy isn't interested in Escobar at SS, or Berardino specifically asked (but failed to mention) if this would open up the possibility of Bartlett stealing the job.
  12. There won't be any extension and I'm guessing his agent knows it, but it's still possible he comes back. I'd guess it would only be after he hits free agency, finds little interest and the Twins still haven't figured out the DH spot or he's willing to be a low cost bench bat.
  13. Well now we know who to blame when everyone starts to get hurt! We were all thinking it but the rest of us had the good sense not to bring it up so as not to jinx the rotation. Congratulations, another 90 loss season and all because of PseudoSABR.
  14. I'm interested also, but picking the top HS arm at #5 may require a large signing bonus. If the Twins go that route, it might be hard to snag another high ceiling HS guy in the 2nd round and get him to sign.
  15. I'd like to think that once spring training is in full swing and free agency is bascially done, the Twins will evaluate what they have and put all three of the listed pitchers along with Duensing and Swarzak on the trade block. Getting anything that doesn't require a 40-man spot for the above three starters would seem like a win, because I think all three get claimed, assuming full health by Deduno.
  16. It's doubtful that he plays much outfield after 2014, and I'd really like to keep the DH spot open. Maybe a one year deal for 2015 might make sense if he hits well this year and it's clear that guys like Parmelee, Kennys Vargas or DJ Hicks aren't an answer or are not ready to contribute. Still, I like that DH to be a bit flexible considering it's possible the Twins may start to develop more talent than they have positions for. However we're looking at him as a starter right now. If he was willing to be a bench bat like the Twins had originally intended for Jim Thome and what Jason Giambi has done to extend his career the last half dozen years, there could be a spot for him.
  17. You'd know better than I would then. Still, those tend to be the kinds of folks who don't understand that baseball, or movies and music for that matter, existed more than ten years ago. I don't even bother trying to argue with those narrow focused people, you can't really. They're the same people who would say Kanye West is the greatest musician of all time but couldn't even name one member of the Beatles.
  18. http://www.tradingcarddb.com/Images/Cards/Baseball/65819/65819-32Fr.jpg Am I playing this game right?
  19. Well to be fair, Pavano never really had that option as much as he surely would have liked to.
  20. I wanted pitching as I didn't think Buxton as I though most people's argument at the time for the BPA was simply code for "I don't want a pitcher!" I wanted Appel, Zimmer, Gausman, though honestly I jumped on the Buxton hype as soon as his name was called. I wanted nothing to do with Zunino.
  21. Teams did agree to to the international signing rules, BIRD, and no rules are being broken. This has been pointed out now many times over. Teams have have decided to take the financial hit and sacrifice their ability to sign players the following year and it appears more will do so again next year. Any team can do this, including the Twins. Unless the rules get changed, this is perfectly legal, ethical and every team has the ability to do it. You are the one who keeps bringing up the payroll, I simply used it as another example of what many would consider questionable ethics. So enough of trying to misdirect the discussion. AGAIN I'm not arguing that the Twins need to stick to the statement that they'd spend 52% of revenue. AGAIN I am arguing against your claim that breaking a non-existent rule that you (and many of us) wish were in place is unethical. It isn't.
  22. I never argued against the stadium, this discussion is getting twisted but not by me. I argued against your claim that going over the International spending limit was unethical. I didn't blast the Twins for being hypocritical, it wasn't THEM who claimed it was unethical to spend more than the International slotting. Again, you haven't clarified why the analogy is bogus. I'm more than happy the stadium was built and I didn't argue it shouldn't have been. I said with the new stadium an implied payroll was expected to be sustained. In fact it was promised. Things changed, we'll get over it. But how is that any less unethical than going over an International signing slot? Bottom line is it isn't. All teams have the prerogative to go over the bonus allotment, just as all teams have the prerogative to set their payroll.
  23. Olympic fever? Pretty sure Bob Costas is spreading it.
  24. The move is a little off-the-wall but not upsetting. I don't have much interest in the guy but I think the consternation from some comes from the roster spot he's taking up. If we assume he will be removed if/when another free agent is signed then no harm, no foul. But that is an assumption at this point.
  25. Yes, and for middle of America teams that are not as natural of a draw for foriegn players.
