  1. I guess I'll be in the minority but I actually have a few more concerns about Gonsalves now. I think most people expected his velocity to increase as part of his normal development, but didn't it go from low 90's in HS to more upper 80's last year? That concerns me a bit. Maybe even more than a bit regardless of results. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, I'd gladly sacrafice my take for some good news. My dark horse is Anderlin Mejia. He can play anywhere on the infield, has good on-base skills, low strikeout rate and can swipe a good number of bags. He's not sexy and has a low ceiling and no power, but I bet he's a utility player for the Twins after unexpected injury #2.
  2. Yeah, it would only mean the 2016 MLB Draft thread starts in May instead of June.
  3. What do the Twins need to do for a Successful Winter Meeting? Hold zero press conferences.
  4. McCarthy will probably require three years or so, would you really want that? I sure wouldn't. Not even two.
  5. I'd like to agree but when you throw the word "quality" into your sentance you've taken the Twins out of your hypothetical over the last half decade. If the team didn't have a track record of deciding rotation spots based much more heavily on experience than potential then I'd say the more the merrier, however, even experience with spotty results seems to weigh more than potential with this club often times.
  6. I guess I'm going with Hunter. Joe may have a bounce back year, but I think TF is really going to lend itself to inflate Hunter's numbers. Also, since WAR is cumulative, Hunter's strong track record of games played gives him a leg up against Mauer's less than postive recent track record of staying on the field.
  7. Both pick Buehler? Eh, I hope that changes. Small righty who's fastball sits in the low 90's but then unsurprisingly got a little boost in the Cape Cod League. I think we've seen that several times now the last couple years it's turned out to be a mirage.
  8. That's likely Ryan's thought, but I don't like it. They're too old to hope they will force the issue. They need the issue forced upon them. No more coddling and pats on the back, turn these guys into fighters and less reliant on organizational glad handing. If their psyche is too fragile to handle the expectations of a MLB rotation at 25, odds are they're never going to be mentally strong enough to be useful.
  9. I don't think so because that would mean that every ball the fielder couldn't get to would score a run, and they usually don't equal a run. Also, if Hicks makes a play on three balls a game, that means he misplays 1 in 9 chances. That doesn't sound like a lot, but it is, an unreasonable amount actually. Another thing, perhaps I'm wrong, but the range factor likely doesn't put different weight on which direction the fielder's range is most affecting the game. Slow-footed outfielders natuarally play back, which means they likely are missing more balls hit in front of them. While they'll fail to catch more of these balls, these only turn into singles which are much less likely to cause a run. Still, I'm guessing with most of these metrics, a missed ball played in front of the fielder isn't calculated differently than a missed ball that gets to the gap.
  10. Well the same rankings say that Andrew McCutchen is the 3rd worst defensive CF and Mike Trout is the 4th worst.
  11. I'll take any pitcher that only requires one year and can manage a minimum 7.5 K/9 in the AL. Otherwise, not interested. Also, if the Twins give one spot to Pelfrey or Milone and make May and Meyer fight for another spot, I won't be happy. The loser of the May/Meyer fight should have a shot at the Pelfrey/Milone spot also. In fact, unless Pelfrey/Milone really overwhelm, both spots should be going to the youngsters.
  12. While I agree, seeing as the Twins clearly have an affinity for former players, UZR has a human element also. I'd guess that both sides are wrong, in opposite directions of the scale of course. People just need to build the robots and let them do the math. Maybe it's just because I can barely use a calculator, but people + numbers seem to be a bad fit.
  13. I 'm in for a trade, though I'll admit I probably undervalue him. A .750 OPS in a career year doesn't do a lot for me, but I probably still haven't adjusted to post steroid era numbers nor the fact that the 3B position is no longer populated by sluggers in today's game.
  14. I mostly agree in the fact he should know how these things work before dismissing them. Still UZR, critics and Ryan himself agree Hunter's issue is his range. That's still measured by the human eye. Ryan's scouts watched a representative sample of 30+ games and did not see the same drastic range issue. That basically means it's still human vs human discrepancy. Even if Ryan doesn't doesn't realize it, he's basically arguing that he trusts his scouts evaluations more then the UZR or crowd sourced scouting. Trusting your scouts over the other guy's scouts certainly is a valid opinion, even if your scouts turn out to be wrong.
  15. Ugh, I'm not sure where this puts me. I'm very critical of Ryan's reluctance to buy into advanced statistics, but that's based in the fact that I want him to utilize them for offense and shifts, actual calculable data. I also think defensive metrics are more sham than glam.
  16. He does play deep. At TF though that option is going to basically be taken out of his hands. You play deep in TF and you can still shake the 2B's hand.
  17. As prophisized by yesterday's news conference.
  18. Isn't it considered an act of war around in this state to suggest a player should scrap his changeup?
  19. Well I highly question their reporting, but aren't defensive metrics still based on an obvservation of range as well? 30 out of 162 is a pretty good representative sample size actually. I question the Twins ability to use advanced metrics, but I guess I don't know why a Twins scout trying to determine range would be any less credible than the John Does who are recording the data for the defensive metrics.
  20. I agree, no one should have to clear their questions with the team, I never suggested they should. I said that since these things have been devoid of tough questions since anyone can remember, Berardino's decision to ask one now probably played exactly opposite of the Twins expectations. It would be a blast if Joe Blow decided he wasn't going to ask his scripted question during a Presidential debate and asked a more inflamatory question. But it wouldn't be fair, that's not what was expected or prepared for. It would be BS to tell the candidate the question, but it would be fair to tell them we aren't following the script anymore and the rules have changed. Maybe you're right, the Twins should just have prepared for it, but they (or at least Hunter) didn't.
  21. That could be, but I can't remember any hardball questions at introductory pressers. Maybe I'm wrong, but these things have always seemed low key and unrehearsed. Like I said, I'm not opposed to a change in forumla, but I doubt the Twins were expecting it.
  22. The quote function is broken?
  23. Boy, they sure pulled the plug on Hunter fast. You know you're getting a solid player when BBR lists his second position as "Pinch Hitter" Shane Robinson Shane Michael Robinson (twitter: @SUGASHANE43) Positions: Outfielder and Pinch Hitter Bats: Right, Throws: Right Height: 5' 9", Weight: 165 lb.
