  1. I'd agree, but this would be that year as the Twins won't be against their double secret, self imposed salary cap. If they get competitve in the next couple years, they may.
  2. This makes some sense, but using a players current salary as the barometer of his worth is about as outdated as measuring his performance based on RBIs. Every salary discussion these days revolves around AAV, which obviuosly wouldn't be affected by backloaded contracts, and there isn't a GM in the league who thinks he's going to get a pass from Scott Boras by using current salary instead of AAV.
  3. Not to mention that by lowering the comitment to the player in the future, the team's free agent budget should be larger the following years. Seems like something the union would really embrace.
  4. Berardino thinks Graham is the pick if he gets to the Twins: https://twitter.com/MikeBerardino/status/542946215508185088 So we can probably cross him off the list considering how the last couple of weeks have played out for Berardino, he's on a bit of a cold streak.
  5. The Cardinals are going to be enjoying Jon Lackey's $1 million dollar salary this year. You do it now because the Twins will not carry over payroll, so if 2017 comes around with a bumper crop of free agents but the Twins still have Santana on the books for $17M we're SOL. Pay him $7M in 2017 and pay that extra $10M this year when they're is no chance of payroll problems. There's nothing moronic about it, unless one is concerned with not being able to collect the extra interest those last couple of years. That would seem to be an odd concern considering the sum of the interest is nothing compared to the extra few millions of dollars the player and club try to wrangle out of each other during negotiations.
  6. Well you have my vote for sure now.
  7. Yes, if someone will overpay, you have to sell someone who looks to be a bench player.
  8. I'd rather do 2/40 than 4/60. Any chance the Twins would be creative and front load the hell out of a multi-year deal? The free agent market is awful this year, there's next to nothing to buy, blow your cash now and if you can't resist the urge to give Santana multiple years, can those last years be at a significantly reduced salary; ie a salary this team wouldn't be afraid to eat?
  9. Overachieving or finding his place, either way the Dodgers got a hell of a prospect in Heaney. I probably would have been talked into trading Dozier for that haul, those are some pretty good looking pieces.
  10. San Fran is notoriously chilly actually, it could have been part of the script the whole time.
  11. Good write up, but I'm not trading Plouffe and Pinto for one year of Porcello. The Twins aren't competing this year and Porcello is decent but not good enough to make a difference. I also have difficulty watching games with pitchers who's strikeout numbers rival Carl Pavano.
  12. No, but pitching in mid June before he got hurt when the Twins were already out of contention would have given us a pretty good barometer of where we stand with him now. How many innings do we need before we can fairly evaluate these guys at the MLB level? Because he could have gotten a good number of them under his belt last year and we'd be more clearly see the path of the rebuild.
  13. Yet the results are still the same: uncertainty. This team was terrible last year, even if they didn't pitch well, they wouldn't have made the team less competitive. It was wasted experience opportunities. There's nothing they could learn at Rochester that they couldn't in Minneapolis except perhaps that getting paid to waste the precious few bullets blessed within their arms is significantly less.
  14. We said that last off season about both of them. Maybe if they'd done that with one of them I'd have more faith. I just don't, the rotation was awful last year and they couldn't find room for them.
  15. Sounds like the Twins offered Escobar for Dillon Gee: https://twitter.com/Joelsherman1/status/542758982494867456 To me that sucks on multiple levels, the obvious being that the Twins would have another 5th starter with an 88 MPH fastball, which contrary to some, I believe you can too much of. The second is that if the Twins are willing to move Escobar, that likely means they wouldn't move Plouffe as I'd assume the team would want Escobar to replace him at least short term. If Plouffe actually does have increased value due in no small part to the demands of disappointing Chase Headley and the rediculous contract Pablo Sandoval got, go and get a nice haul for Plouffe. Stop messing around with this Gee crap. Just stop! Either Ryan can't see what the rest of us do, that Gee is no different than the other weak-armed NL pitchers that continue to flop for the Twins, or he doesn't see that they are actually flopping. In either case he needs to recuse himself from evaluating pitchers, he is continuing to prove he is incapable of doing so at least when it comes to the Senior Circuit.
  16. I'd acutally argue that "Now" and "The Future" wins are going to be on independant paths this off season. A stop-gap pitcher now MAY provide an extra win or two, but that just delays the evaluation of whether the younger arms will be suitable for the rotation. If May and Meyer only get 70 innings this year, we're still in the same boat in 2016 that we are now; that being decidely unsure of their capabilities.
  17. Yeah, it's a good point but I don't know that it will help with any kind of determination with Miley as his K numbers probably need to normalize before we know what to expect out of him in either league.
  18. During losing seasons, two of the four most anticipated times of the year are the Winter Meetings and the trade deadline. It's funny that this would be so, as I always look forward to them only spend my work day trying to control the urge to type in all caps out of sheer frustration.
  19. I have my moments. I'm not trying to be contentious at all. And really I'm making the mistake of having two completely different argeuements at once. Santana is a fine pitcher and would upgrade the team. I basically just don't trust that UCL for a long term deal. I also don't like having another 4-year-deal seeing as Nolasco is basically unmovable. My issues with blocking May, Meyer or whomever, basically is with the idea that back-of-the-rotation, noodle-armed NLers like Vogelsong, Gee or Kendrick would be of any significant upgrade. The experience they would be stunting would almost surely not be worth the "depth" they provide. 2015's version of Joahn Pino could likely get you very similar results.
  20. They can be traded, but they generally only have value if you give them the closers job first. I've been advocating for quite awhile that the Twins should trade Perkins, promote the next guy, trade him and repeat. I don't think there is anything in baseball quite like this sham. There are rumors of the Yankees looking at Jason Grilli now that they lost out on Robertson, because while they have Batences and Miller, neither are "closers" and Grilli is. Ha, what a load of crap! A smart team would turn their club into a "closer" factory and capitalize on this bizarre market inefficency ASAP. Won't be our Twins though.
  21. Not if you're continually adding water to it.
  22. Your words not mine, but this is a club that gave Ricky Nolasco 27 starts and let Jared Burton finish 21 games last year. So no, maybe that's all it boils down to, but I don't trust them to make the right decisions about what kind of playing time is best for furture development.
  23. That sounds logical, but this team doesn't have a history of doing this. After all, they're in the same position as last year and even though the team was terrible for 3/4 of the season and they had two of their top prospects in AAA, only one got called up, and it was very late in the season. If the team was OK with moving parts to make room for prospects, both would have been up by mid June last year. They do not appear to be that accomodating. Probably because in a futile effort to sell tickets, they like to pretend they are clinging on to playoff life right up until the trade deadline, no matter what.
  24. I swear, they only do this crap to help the local papers get page hits on their message boards.
  25. Well the free agent class this year is pretty devoid of power, so either it's a player with "power" only to the Twins perspective, or perhaps a trade. I think I saw something connecting them briefly to Mike Morse once, he wouldn't really be a fit, but who knows with this club. Mark Reynolds as a bench bat or Plouffe trade insurance?
