  1. How dare Mauer want the best for his kids. The demands of these Prima Donna athletes!
  2. My opinion is that Atlanta will just take him back. Maybe I'm wrong, but the guy is really talented so unless the Twins offered something really good, I can only see him making the big league bullpen or being offered back. I would think so, but the Braves have had a terrible stretch of arm injuries to their young pitchers. They non-tendered and have made no effort to bring back Beachey and Medlin, they may be cutting bait with some of these guys and starting fresh.
  3. Ricky Nolasco, Jason Marquis and Mike Pelfrey say yes. I think it was a great deal though. Only $4 million guaranteed? It's a bargain considering the Twins routinely pay more for inferior pitchers like Pelfrey and Kevin Corriea.
  4. A surplus of middle infielders wouldn't be a bad thing, not many teams are so fortunate. Considering how the other Asian players are getting paid this offseason, I'm guessing Kang and his team will end up disappointed in the offers. I have no problem if the Twins have the least disappointing offer. Plus he's a free agent under 30!
  5. Not great for players, pretty good for owners, and optimal for fans. Sounds like the best it's going to get from a fan's perspective, unless you're a fan in California or New York. The game is still about drawing fans, it doesn't work if everyone outside of LA and New York lose interest. These guys know going in that becoming a MLB player doesn't allow them to choose their destination. It's not unique that way. The military, large law compaines, finance companies, insurance companies and hospitals may require the same.
  6. There was a January draft not too long ago. It was for amatures who graduated in the Winter. It's how the Twins acquired Kirby Puckett. Whatever the requirements, there could be an auxilary draft for players who were not eligible to be drafted during the Rule IV draft or players like Aiken or Nix who were screwed over by the Astros. The draft isn't bad for players, it just doesn't maximize their earnings. Sorry boys, but it's better than the old way, that is unless one thinks it's OK that the Twins and other non-major markets never get the top talent.
  7. I guess the silver lining is they are now very unlikely to be forced to play for the Astros.
  8. Plenty of people thought the US should "own" Cuba without the quotation marks. Alas Imperialism was getting a bad rap around the time Teddy Roosevelt started marching around the island.
  9. I don't think Schwarber is going to stay at C, I think he's supposed to be pretty bad defensively. I'm pretty prejudiced against catchers as I want the offensive guy with the highest ceiling and catchers rarely have the highest offensive ceiling. Better college catcher than HS catcher though. HS catchers have a near 100% bust rate since Mauer and McCann got drafted early this century.
  10. They didn't manipulate to their advantage, but only because they completely bungled the situation. They TRIED to manipulate to their advantage, but failed. I would think the intent should play a part in any decsion MLB makes in this case. MLBPA is probably torn as they wouldn't want a team trying to low ball the draft picks again but also wouldn't want to completely wipe out a couple of draft picks, and their slot bonuses. If there was going to be pick forefiture (and there probably won't be) the best compromise would probably be to take a pick(s) away from the Astros and make one more pick up for grabs among the competitive balance teams, excluding Houston.
  11. I've seen that one. The Pohlads may want to stay away, it doesn't work out so well for the least intellegent of the three brothers. http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20141001122727/godfather/images/b/b4/Fredo-kiss.jpg I knew it was you Bill, you broke my heart.
  12. You remember, he was one of those low cost veterans at the end of their career Ryan brought in about a decade ago. He's making a comeback. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sierrru01.shtml
  13. I'd have to say there doesn't seem to be much consistancy between MiLB AB's and IP and WARP. The Mets were the poster child in the article as to why not to call up guys early. They probably did call up guys too soon, but the better teams according to WARP were all over the board. Oakland had the best WARP yet were one of the teams with the quickest call up for pitchers, conversely they were among the slowest call up for batters. Tampa, who was 3rd in WARP was just the opposite, being slowest for pitchers, and among the fastest for batters. Meanwhile Cincinatti, which was 2nd in WARP, was sitting exactly in the middle in both catagories.
  14. From the looks of it, none of them could afford to pay dues anyway. I would think that perhaps the union would start supporting minor leaguers if only to have another avenue for leverage with the owners. Still, I'm sure they've weighed the cost benefits of such decisions. Which of course then makes the union seem all too similar to the owners.
  15. The Astros avoided legal wranglings with last year's pick Jacob Nix by agreeing to some kind of settlement. For those that forgot, the Astros promised Nix $1.5 million, which was overslot to begin with. When the team failed to sign Brady Aiken they lost the Aiken slot allotment. With the allotment gone, Nix's bonus would have put the Astros over their spending limit and would have caused them to lose two future draft picks. At this time the payoff isn't being reported, and surely the Astros want to keep it that way. Here's hoping the league and the MLBPA doesn't let Houston continue with these shenanigans and penalizes the Astros accordingly, pulling draft picks from them regardles of their inability to sign the players.
  16. If Ryan is still fielding calls about his middle infielders, I'd guess Nunez sticks around until the spring at least. It is yet to be seen if the new field staff yearns for 3rd catchers as much as the previous one. Perhaps it was a position that Ryan craved, but didn't it seem like it was always Gardenhire who had a hard time sleeping when a 3rd catcher wasn't in place? I think Herrmann is near the top of the 40-man chopping block.
  17. Yeah, but sometimes it works against Chicago teams also. A little reasearch will show that Hunter came to the Twins at a reduced price considering what the White Sox were willing to give him. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2007/11/white-sox-to-1.html Come on people grow up, sometimes we get a break too!
  18. I'm not a fan of their moves individually. I guess if you're going to go for it, you might as well not half ass it though. The White Sox attempted to fix most of their major holes, including getting a starting pitcher and corner outfielder, both of whom are better players than the Twins signed. I don't think it will work out for them, but at least no deals were longer than three years.
  19. That team looks like a train wreck. What a disaster. How long are they going to be able to resist the urge not to bid on Scherzer or Shields? I'd love for either to go there as I think both of them are time bombs.
  20. The Morales signing may be the strangest this offseason. Perhaps it's just a signal that the Royals are ready to go back to their days of terrible decision making.
  21. I would agree that the Twins have seemed to have a change of mentality about young players the last several years. At least offensively, several have been called up straight from AA. Pitchers are a different story. My guess is that since they have had such trouble developing them, they are not exactly sure what they need to do to get them ready. Internal debate or second guessing would likely slow down pitchers when they get to the upper levels.
  22. Will Danny Santana play more games at SS or CF in 2015?
  23. Great data Seth. Glad to see the minor leaguers are ahead of the curve age-wise. I wish the MLB roster was the same. For a rebuilding team, they have too many players 30+ for my taste..
  24. Which is why they should have been called up and allowed to struggle as soon as the Twins were out of contention last year. I'm of the mindset that there is very little minor league seasoning that is going to dampen a pitchers MLB struggles. Pitchers like Felix Hernandez, Clayton Kershaw and Jose Fernandez took the league by storm and pitched few MiLB innings. You're either a prodigy, or you aren't. If you aren't, you're just going to have to take your MLB lumps. Doesn't mean you can't be a star, but AAA is just homework, on the job training is always best.
  25. But May and Meyer shouldn't have been afforded the same MLB learning opportunities? Had they gotten June/July callups, they'd both be on the same learning arc as Gibson was but a year behind.
