  1. Does the team still have to have two utility IF? Gardy's gone. Some teams only have one.
  2. I'd guess much of it is based on who was around him. It might be impossible to look bad when you're sandwiched between Willingham and Arcia. By default you're the best outfielder on the field. Also, most of his mistakes seemed to be of the mental variaty. People probably assume those can be corrected with coaching, experience, focus or repetition. Same reason most people aren't closing the book on Arcia just yet.
  3. I hope the many reports of Smith's lack of relatability are false, but I guess it's not like it's his first time managing this team. Seems like his teams win, but not sure about his players development under him. The offensive players under his watch both in Beloit and Ft. Myers were hit or miss at best. Plouffe, Parmelee, Benson all seemd to struggle. Ramos emerged and Danny Valencia did well, not sure if relating to Valencia is much of a feather in your cap though.
  4. Didn't Mientkiewicz prefer to stay in Ft. Myers for family reasons? If that was his preference but the Twins still were able to put him where they wanted him, you'd have to think there was either a pretty strong financial gain or implied future advancement to his satisfaction.
  5. None of the above.
  6. Add Nick Punto to the list as a minor league deal with a ST invite. He was just released from the A's.
  7. That's a pretty big name to snag as your AAA manager. Good for the Twins and good for the Red Wings. I wonder if the timing of this announcement had anything to do with the Twins knowledge of what will happen with Mientkiewicz Smith.
  8. If someone were to ask me a week ago if Ryan Hannigan had any trade value, I would have said no. Now he's been traded twice in a week. Makes me wish the Twins had some of that boring, replaceable and seemingly useless defensive catcher depth they used to overstock the previous decade. You know, guys like Rene Rivera and Drew Butera. Rumor is, even those guys could get moved in this market.
  9. Wish they would have joined the party a year or two earlier but I guess better late than never. Go crazy on these Hispanic players. Take advantage of the loophole before it closes.
  10. Yeah, Eric Thames was a pretty good minor league player and didn't get much of a shot at the MLB. He only played sparingly in two MLB seasons but his rookie year he had a 105 OPS. If he had been a rookie SS people would probably still be talking about his potential. And as with every other Asian non-pitcher, I don't believe he will be getting offers anything near the $30-40 million. Cubans are the new Asians, these guys have not been happy with the winning posts as of late.
  11. Surely there are some people who think you need a lefty. However I just assume lefties, who have inferrior stuff just often get the benefit of the doubt because left handed hitters all too often inflate their stats for them. It's like golfing in a tournament with a high handicapped golfer. He might not be the best, but he looks a lot better when you get to take some strokes off of his game. But I agree, you draft the guy with the best stuff regardless of what hand it comes out of.
  12. Ha, well it takes two (minimum) so my bad as well. Funny how two guys that so often agree went ahead and derailed the 2015 draft thread before it was actually 2015.
  13. Sometimes you're good enough to make it to the playoffs because your division stinks. When the Twins were making it to the playoffs and losing to the Yankees, they were also losing to the Yankees at something like a 90% clip in the regular season. They were making the post season, but their regular season performance sure seemed to indicate that no, they would not be able to win in the postseason.
  14. And it's really not all that surprising considering how much this club values control pitchers. Berrios has the ability to make everyone happy though as he can also miss bas and has good velocity. If he ever lived up to his potential, he could be the pitcher that brings all Twins fans together!
  15. If I recall, when he was drafted his English wasn't very good. However considering the level of commitment and focus he clearly shows in developing his pitching, if he devoted a 10th of that toward learning English, he'd probably already be more articulate than any of us.
  16. Fine, only one team in the last twenty years has won a World Series without an ace and the Twins have never won without an ace. Better?
  17. No one said it was the best system for the players. The arguement was that it wasn't "bad" for the players. Something not being perfectly ideal doesn't make it "bad." For most players the draft is good. The guys drafted in the later rounds already get paid next to nothing. How much do you think they'd get paid if the top amature free agents took up 95% of a teams minor league payroll instead of 85%? Without the draft, they're be plenty of guys playing baseball for free.
  18. This quote upsets me badly: “I’m not sure you need a true No. 1 to get to the postseason,” he said after the signing. “We have not had a true No. 1 in many of those years that we got there, so if you’ve got the five solid, you’ve got a pretty good chance to get there, and then let the playoffs dictate exactly where you’re headed.” Yeah, perhaps you don't need an ace to GET to the playoffs, but how has he not realized by now that you need one, or two or three to win it all?! So tired of this attitude, he doesn't get it.
  19. Well he just moved to Petco Park, so that increase in power isn't looking to optimistic.
  20. What other system? The system that lets retail stores only hire part time workers so they don't have to pay anyone benefits? The system that allows Walmart to fire employees who protest for better wages? The system that lets automotive, pharmaceutical and tobacco companies terminate whistleblowers? Rare is a workplace that isn't significantly weighted in favor of those cutting the checks. The MLB draft has nothing on the unfair hiring and firing practices of most major corporations. Those injustices affect the lives of people who don't have the luxery of getting paid to perform their dream job with the potential to make obscene money.
  21. Sure they can. They do it all the time. There are all kinds of baseball leagues not affiliated with the MLB. If you want to work for the top end company, they have certain rules and requirements you have to follow. If you don't like it, audition for the Saints. I don't like the direction of this conversation though, as I'm not comfortable sticking up for big business.
  22. It was a nice story, and the team did reward him for what seemed like years of toiling in the minors. Still, it's those kinds of decsions that drive some of us crazy. The team was out of contention and Pino was clearly not going to be part of the team's future. The job should have gone to May who should have stuck in the rotation the rest of the year giving the team a much better read on him coming into this year. I know it's cold, but as people are saying now about the prospects and the rotation crunch, there would have been opporunities later in the year for Pino to get his congratulatory call up. This team can't be making decisions on what's "fair" for individual players because in the long run, those decisions all too often aren't in the best interests of everone else in the organization. The good of the many outweighs the good of the few.
  23. I am anything but an anti-union capitalist, but we act like the potential employers are the Twins, the Dodgers, the Yankees, etc. The employer is MLB and just as any large corporation, they have the descretion as to which division new hires will be assigned. They don't do it the same way, but they still do it. If you don't like the hiring process at Microsoft, go right ahead and find yourself a different employer. I'm not a fan of big business, but despite the MLB's many terrible practices, they are far from the only organization that will bend any rule to best fit their needs. Walmart employees get screwed far worse than these young men.
  24. A certain travesty. Their HS peers are fighting for jobs at McDonalds and their college peers are busy getting turned down for jobs despite just spending 40K on a degree. I can't believe we are forcing these young men to play baseball for a living. If only we gave them other career paths to chose from.
  25. How dare Mauer want the best for his kids. The demands of these Prima Donna athletes!
