Starers aren't always as important. Still, we found the same four teams in the (real) AL playoffs with the same stud aces as we did last year. I would have bet against the Brewers in any of those matchups. And, yeah saying that I'm fairly confident they'll prove me wrong and win the WS making a mockery of which ever AL rotation ends up facing them.

I'm actually in favor of moving prospects for higher end talent this winter. But we can probably all agree the Twins need to stop being the cat.

Well Yelich was one of those hitters who seemed to resist the launch angle craze, he hit a ton of groundballs and a good percentage of line drives but his flyball percentage was low. He wasn't unlike Kepler. However, while Kepler actually did change his GB/FB ratios quite a bit in 2017, Yelich really did not, they're similar to last year. What looks different is that Yelich's hard hit percentage jumped 12% while Kepler's only jumped 3%. I'd guess whatever has caused that spike is where we'd find the improvement. I can't imagine that was ballpark related though.

It certainly could be that I over-estimate the need for a strong rotation. I still think that had the Twins done what the Brewers did last off season and won 96 games, that once October arrived many of us (or again, maybe just myself) would have still said great record, fun season, but how the hell is that Twins rotation supposed to get past Sale, Verlander, Kluber and Severino?

I think the lucky part was that both Cain and Yelich had unexpected career years and their extremely underwhelming rotation that they completely failed to address in any meaningful way somehow hung on. I think there's plenty of room to both applaud the Brewers and point out that they probably got quite lucky. It worked out and I'm cheering for them, but I don't think this was some kind of genius masterstroke. Also, while I'd like with a Yelich-type move this offseason for the Twins, I'd be more interested in figuring out what exactly the Brewers did to change Yelich's game. That might be more important than the actual trade. He is a completely different hitter than he was in Miami.

I like how aggressive the Brewers were and I like the example the set. However, I still can't believe that rotation won them 96 games. I think they got lucky in that area and think putting a good but not elite offense around what appeared to be an average at best rotation was a bit reckless and shortsighted.

I feel a lot better about the defense which means I feel a lot better about the team. They looked pretty stout until they went to cover-2 prevent that last drive. Wentz was good too, he made plenty of nice throws and escaped some dicey situations; his line was bad but the QB wasn't giving away possessions with poor decisions and sloppy play. So it's not like the D got a break facing a good QB who was having an off day. I want the Buffalo game back and I want the crack at the go ahead TD against LA back, but all in all 2-2-1 isn't too bad with their schedule thus far. And after this stretch, national expectations are drastically reduced. The NFC North isn't particularly tough either; if they have their act together now I like where the Vikings are at. Let the Rams keep carrying this ridiculous banner that they're far and away the best team in the NFC; I don't want that banner.

It looks to me like the front office values control with the young arms. Over the last two years Rogers and Hildenberger have gotten very long leashes, Busenitz and Moya get repeated looks throughout the season and Slegers and Stewart have gotten rather surprising promotions. Meanwhile Burdi and Chargois are gone and Bard is only back because the Angels handed him back, he also Reed sits on the sideline with Reed. John Curtis has largely been in the same boat, he's gotten a September call up both of the past two years but was only given a token look both times and never got a mid year promotion despite his options.

***Moderator Note*** Let's refrain from painting groups of posters with broad strokes. Even better, maybe we don't have to act like there has to be sides in this situation. We're all Twins fans after all and we're all on the same side in the big picture.

I'd think the third paragraph would be easier should the second paragraph be realized. I'm in no way giving Molior a pass for his bullpen usage, but I'd guess if the manager had more than two relievers at any given time who were reliable it would be easier to play matchups, give quick hooks and not to overwork.

I hope the team is constantly looking to trade for undervalued guys, but at this point I don't want them pinning the success of 2019's bullpen a diamond in the rough.
  12. nicksaviking
Well the Twins could have traded for a Pressly-type bullpen arm in July too but they didn't because the team was so far in the hole that there wasn't much point to it. Making a good team before the season starts will win you more games than making a good team in the middle of the season.

And I think a dozen is short-changing it. I think the class could be 20 deep. I just don't want to sit back this offseason and wait for the "bargains". They need to go get the guys they want, they'll never be able to spend all their free agent money anyway. Let another team celebrate getting "bargains" in February, if no one else is offering them perceived market value, there's likely a good reason for it. Pay for the strikeouts, pay of the velocity pay for the plus control, don't skimp and see who's still around when the dust clears. The "bargain" guy can be the third addition. Maybe.

This year's free agent class of relievers might be unprecedented. Also unprecedented: the Twins available payroll. If they can't get two or three excellent-to-elite BP arms then they're not trying hard enough. Buy the relievers, trade for the other areas of need. This team can afford even the priciest reliever, if they try to do similarly with starting pitchers or elite bats they have to settle for 3rd tier guys.

I know the counting stars aren’t cool anymore, but I’d like to see him go the route of the classic HOF starter in his twilight years; pitch until he’s 42, maybe bounce around to a few other franchises and pick up his 300th win whilst sporting a grey beard.
  16. nicksaviking
I don't think there's a scenario where the Wolves "win" a trade. But if Butler is going to be a cancer they'll definitely lose if they don't move him.
  17. nicksaviking
I'd agree, but that could be because it's just so hard to wrap my mind around the idea that Milwaukee could possibly be a top team. I'm happy for them and I hope everyone over here in the next yard over can see it can be done, but that Brewers rotation just doesn't look very ferocious, and that's the first place my eyes go when I look at playoff teams.
  18. nicksaviking
Good for him. As I'm sure Detriot would attest to, a 90 MPH junkballing righty probably has a better chance of making it in the NL these days.

I'd agree that the Red Sox are the lesser of two evils, but I still can't like them for a couple of reasons. One being last century when ESPN was still relevant and they absolutely demanded that everyone had to pick a side in the Yankee/Sox rivalry, screw that, I'm still allowed to dislike them both. I don't even remember disliking the Red Sox until ESPN said I had to make a choice. The second reason is the Red Sox complete embracement of some fanciful underdog role simply because they'd only compare themselves to the Yankees and not say the Rays. But organizational-wise? Yeah, I'd like to copy the Red Sox, I just struggle to get past the phony baloney optics they drape themselves in. Also, everything I just said about the Red Sox also goes for the Cubs.
  20. nicksaviking
Well only if our team is losing. Great idea though since the game becomes official in the fifth. Definitely sounds like a Jeff Pickler out-of-the-box move.
  21. nicksaviking
He sounds interesting to me. His profile, not his name. The name Stubby Clapp sounds like it belongs to a guy who somehow stumbled into our game straight from the deadball era where the most innovative thing the game has seen is the double switch.
  22. nicksaviking
Well maybe the plan is to continue to feature Belisle and Gimenez.
  23. nicksaviking
Yeah the (alleged) knock on him was that he couldn’t or wouldn’t relate to younger players. https://www.nbcsports.com/video/new-york-yankees-joe-girardi-might-have-lost-job-due-young-players
  24. nicksaviking
I'd prefer managerial experience but it's not a deal breaker for me if they find a guy who's innovative and energizing. I'd really prefer no former Twins players though. Not that I don't think there might be some good ones, but because I don't want the anchor of nostalgia around their neck. I'd prefer they feel that they have a completely clean slate and have neither built up equity nor the pressures to live up to rose-colored memories of their playing days.

I wanted Ervin Santana and his HR prone tendencies nowhere near Yankee Stadium last year. Most of the A's rotation are also flyball pitchers due to their home stadium, the only two guys who would have made any sense to start were Cahill and Anderson, but they'd pitched the previous two games and since Anderson can't miss bats he was still likely to get shelled. The A's bullpen has been the best in the league this year and Hendriks has been great since they brought him back. It was a sound plan, it just didn't work out.
