  1. The Verlander factor is the only reason I’m even remotely interested in Bumgarner. But Verlander’s ability to maintain his velocity and strikeout percentage into his twilight years seems to be unique. Barring injury, Bumgarner probably isn’t likely to completely implode, but based on Tom’s piece, I’d think it’s more likely that Bumgarner resembles a Carl Pavano than a Justin Verlander. That’s still a useful pitcher, but not the kind that will advance a team further in the playoffs.
  2. Thanks Tom. I was in the fence about Bumgarner to begin with, now I’m leaning against. I don’t like Teheran though. I want want a guy who could take the next step and lead a playoff rotation, even if that chance isn’t terribly high, and I don’t think a guy who throws 89-90 even has that chance.
  3. Sounds like the also “expensive” Blake Snell is upset about the Pham trade. Go get him Twins, relieve TB of his terrible financial burden.
  4. *** Moderator Note*** Stu provides some of the assortment of entertainment and reading material for the site, it's what gets people in the door. Just as you may choose to abstain from your local bar the night they have a country act performing, you are also not required to read every article here. And just as the audience members at the bar will be asked to leave if they throw bottles, heckle and disrupt the show, we will ask posters to leave if they do the same here. Stay on topic and stop trying to derail the thread.
  5. Yeah, I'm kind of torn. I'm not sure if he's a good clubhouse guy or not, but I'm not interested in getting into beanball wars and antagonizing the division rivals. Especially if the division rivals mostly are terrible teams and have less to lose than the Twins do.
  6. Lost in this, if this was a cost cutting move by TB, that's just horrible. I don't care that this team still wins despite it's frugal ways, they have the lowest payroll in the sport. MLB needs to stop helping these owners try procure new stadiums in their cities, they need to help the cities procure new owners for their teams.
  7. Similar, but as much as I like Eddie, I think Pham's ability to get on base consistently would make him a fair bit more attractive to other clubs than Rosario.
  8. I doubt Zack Wheeler is one of only two players who chose a deal of lesser money for an ulterior goal. We've heard of players take less money to go (or remain) in a preferred destination, but we also hear of players who only want to play for a contender. It's presumptuous to assume they wouldn't take a lesser offer to ensure they have better teammates and/or a greater chance of winning a WS.
  9. I heard earthquakes are basically free rollercoasters.
  10. I think it would be best to evaluate the players individually instead of lumping the Asian players all together. None of us know anything about this guy, but I'm guessing a batting average isn't what makes or breaks the deal.
  11. I can't imagine you actually know anything about this player?
  12. Yeah, I've been dubious of their anticipated resurrection. I'll believe it when I see it. So maybe you're right, I should also be skeptical of their free agent targets.
  13. Yeah, I thought I read previously that he's a 1B. Good numbers, but hard to say how those will translate. I can't imagine a corner bat costing too much. I'd be interested presuming he doesn't require a contract that would make it difficult to move on from him should better options emerge or he does not perform. Not a fan of the White Sox being tied to every free agent the Twins are though.
  14. I don't care much for Keuchel. The Braves signing Hamels might be good as lots of prognosticators had him going back towards home. Hamels is only on a one year deal though, It wouldn't necessarily preclude a Bumgarner signing. With all their young arms, they might not be interested in multi year deals for starters though. I don't know enough about Bumgarner's personality, but he's kind of escaping a rebuild situation. So if he's not really feeling hot about teaching a bunch of young starters how to wipe their noses, he may prefer joining up with Odorizzi and Berrios instead.
  15. Hold on to this contact Van. I was honestly worried about getting Bumgarner to Minnesota because he strikes me as a Dukes of Hazard kind of guy. You might have a trump card here though. Any idea if his daughter's Daisy Dukes are store bought or hand crafted?
  16. Geez, how'd Wolfson get the Rangers, Astros, White Sox and Ken Rosenthal to all get in on this con?
  17. I've got a plan to make this start working in the Twins favor. Minnesota needs to start producing more baseball wives. How about Target Field hosts a singles mixer for the away players the first night of every series?
  18. I'd take that bet! You could be right, I just feel Wheeler got paid on the potential that comes with a 97 MPH fastball and wipeout slider. At least as far as percetion goes, Bumgarner reached and passed his potential several years ago. But anyone hoping for Bumgarner should take note that the Twins have a history of signing MLBTR's #4 ranked starting pitchers, with both Lance Lynn and Ervin Santana hitting that mark.
  19. I would really like Gausman, but only for the pen, he doesn't have any offspeed pitch. I don't like his FB/splitter combo but it could work in relief. I think if he went to the pen full time, going back to the slider instead of the splitter could make him lights out.
  20. Yeah, going with conventional trade targets may not open many doors, might have to be quite a bit outside the box to entice a less predictable trade partner. I'm still interested in guys with top end stuff who maybe haven't reached their potential.
  21. I see it was for 120M. I assume that's still the presumed 5 years, but maybe it was six, guess that's not out there yet. Dang it. Time to start looking for trade partners.
  22. You're missing 90% of the pieces, and free agency is not that simple. And it doesn't make me feel better. I wan't Wheeler, but I'm not going to go pointing fingers when we know nothing about what's going on.
  23. You don't know that. The Rangers were out before the Twins. There will soon be 29 teams out of the running. We likely will never know all of the offers and we will likely never know all of Wheeler's preferences and demands. If the Twins don't get Wheeler, can't we just be disappointed that we didn't get him without having to over-villainize someone?
  24. That they there were at least six teams trying to get Wheeler and the Twins are one of the 5 that won't get him?
